(KJV) Malachi 1:3

And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.

ESAU I HAVE HATED / MALACHI 1:3

When Israel began to doubt God’s love, the prophet reminded them of how God had chosen their ancestor, Jacob (whom God renamed Israel), over his older brother, Esau -not because Jacob deserved favor, but because God had a plan. The term “hated” as it is used here is meant simply to show the extreme contrast between how God had worked through Jacob’s descendants and what became of the descendants of Esau. The families of Esau showed no desire for God’s ways (Genesis 25:29-34; 28:6-9). God allowed Jacob to inherit the covenant promises He had made to Abraham (Jacob and Wau’s grandfather) and to become one of the forefathers of the chosen people through whom the Messiah (Christ) would come. God’s rejection of Esau and his descendants had nothing to do with their eternal destiny. God originally blessed them with good land (Deuteronomy 2:2-12) and desired that they would serve Him and also receive His Blessing (Genesis 25:23; Romans 9:13). But the Edomites (Esau’s descendants, Genesis 25:30) chose another way and finally were destroyed (Obadiah 1:1-21: Jeremiah 49:7-22).

I HAVE LOVED YOU / MALACHI 1:2

(KJV) Malachi 1:2

I have loved you, saith the Lord. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob’s brother? saith the Lord: yet I loved Jacob,

I HAVE LOVED YOU / MALACHI 1:2

The people were doubting that God really loved them, though He had them and told them repeatedly that He did. Because of their difficulties and troubles that came as a result of their disobedience to God and His law (Malachi 1:6-8), they accused God of being unfaithful to His promises. Through the prophet, God reminded His people that He had cared for them over the years in a special way.

MALACHI / MALACHI 1:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Malachi 1:1

The burden of the word of the Lord to Israel by Malachi.

MALACHI / MALACHI 1:1

Malachi prophesied about 100 years after the first had returned from Babylon to their homeland. The exiles were Jews who had been captured by the Babylonians that invaded the nation of Judah over a period of years and finally destroyed its capital of Jerusalem in 586 B.B (2 Kings 24:1; 25:1) The captives then were sent to regions throughout the empire. Large groups of Jews had returned in stages through the years to rebuild the temple, the city and, finally, the city walls (see the books of Ezra and Nehemiah). At first, the people responded to their freedom and the rebuilding projects with great excitement and passion for God’s plans. However, their commitment to the Lord weakened as the years went by. Around 430 B.C., Malachi challenged the people about their lack of trust in God, their fake worship and their refusal to obey God’s law.

SEND YOU THE PROPHET ELIJAH / MALACHI 4:5

(KJV) Malachi 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord:

SEND YOU THE PROPHET ELIJAH

Malachi prophesies that Elijah would come and minister before the coming day of the Lord. The New Testament reveals that this prophecy refers to John the Baptist (Matthew 11:7-14), who, “in the spirit and power of Elijah” (Luke 1:17), prepared the way for the Christ. Some also believe that Elijah will come again during the tribulation period and will be one of the two witnesses mentioned in Revelation (Revelation 11:3).
