I WILL SEND MY MESSENGER / MALACHI 3:1

(KJV) Malachi 3:1

Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.

I WILL SEND MY MESSENGER / MALACHI 3:1

A word came to those who doubted God’s promises. Malachi pointed out that the One they were waiting for – the Messiah – would certainly come. Before that, God would send a messenger to prepare the way for His coming. This prophecy was fulfilled when John the Baptist came as the forerunner, or predecessor (someone who goes ahead to announce the coming of another), of Jesus Christ (Matthew 11:10; Mark 1:2; Luke 1:76; 7:27).

I HATE DIVORCE / MALACHI 2:16

For the Lord, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the Lord of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.

I HATE DIVORCE / MALACHI 2:16

God hates divorce – especially when it is chosen for selfish reasons. The Lord says this kind of divorce is like a person “covering himself with violence.” That is to say that unjustified divorce is equal in God’s view to extreme injustice, cruelty and murder because of the negative effect it has on people’s lives (Matthew 19:9).

THE WIFE OF YOUR YOUTH / MALACHI 2:14

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Malachi 2:14

Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the Lord hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.

THE WIFE OF YOUR YOUTH / MALACHI 2:14

Marriage was a covenant – a “life agreement” and a pledge of faithfulness to each other in the sight of God. But many men were forsaking their solemn pledge to the wives they had married when they were young. The only reason they were seeking to divorce them was so they could marry someone else. The Lord despised this kind of selfish action. He rebuked them as He reminded them that He had made a husband and wife “one in flesh and spirit” (Malachi 2:10-16; Ephesians 5:31). Because of this sin, God had refused to hear their prayers (Malachi 2:13-14).

MARRYING THE DAUGHTER OF A FOREIGN GOD / MALACHI 2:11

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Malachi 2:11

Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah hath profaned the holiness of the Lord which he loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange god.

MARRYING THE DAUGHTER OF A FOREIGN GOD / MALACHI 2:11

The men were marrying women from surrounding nations who served other gods, a practice forbidden in the law God had given His people through Moses (Exodus 34:15-16; Deuteronomy 7:3-4; 1 Kings 11:1-6). The New Testament states that believers are to marry only people who also are believers (1 Corinthians 7:39). Marrying foreign women who served false gods had been one of the greatest reasons for Israel’s rebellion against God through the centuries. A Christion who marries someone who is not committed to the Lord opens up the definite possibility of being influenced and drawn away from serving God and having children who are not committed to knowing, loving and serving Him.

A DETESTABLE THING / MALACHI 2:10-16

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Malachi 2:10-16

Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers? 11 Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah hath profaned the holiness of the Lord which he loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange god. 12 The Lord will cut off the man that doeth this, the master and the scholar, out of the tabernacles of Jacob, and him that offereth an offering unto the Lord of hosts. 13 And this have ye done again, covering the altar of the Lord with tears, with weeping, and with crying out, insomuch that he regardeth not the offering any more, or receiveth it with good will at your hand. 14 Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the Lord hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. 15 And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. 16 For the Lord, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the Lord of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.

A DETESTABLE THING / MALACHI 2:10-16

Malachi harshly criticizes the people for “breaking faith” (not keeping their commitment to obey and love God and one another). People could not trust their leaders or each other. They had been unfaithful to God’s covenant with them by pushing aside His laws and instructions. They had also behaved deceitfully in their relationships with one another, breaking another important covenant – the marriage covenant. Two examples of their detestable actions are mentioned here: divorcing their wives and marrying ungodly women.

PARTIALITY IN MATTERS OF THE LAW / MALACHI 2:9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Malachi 2:9

Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law.

PARTIALITY IN MATTERS OF THE LAW / MALACHI 2:9

The priests were giving preference to the rich and powerful people: they ignored their sins against God and never warned them to turn from their wicked ways. And the rich often took advantage of others. Pastors and other ministry leaders must preach all of God’s Word to all who are under their responsibility (Acts 20:27). Faithful ministers know they must preach what is hard to hear – not just those things that bring joy and gladness to the people and popularity to the preacher. That means talking about God’s tough challenges, stern warnings and judgment, as well as His comforting promises, wonderful benefits and spiritual salvation. God will cause leaders to answer to Him when they preach about His blessings but ignore His standards of holiness.

MY COVENANT WITH LEVI / MALACHI 2:4-6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Malachi 2:4-6

And ye shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you, that my covenant might be with Levi, saith the Lord of hosts. My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him for the fear wherewith he feared me, and was afraid before my name. The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found in his lips: he walked with me in peace and equity, and did turn many away from iniquity.

MY COVENANT WITH LEVI / MALACHI 2:4-6

The priests were to be chosen from the tribe (family line) of Levi. Here, God used Levi and his faithful descendants as examples of what ministers should be. Ministers today must have the same qualities mentioned in these verses. They must show love and respect for God, live honestly by His standards, preach the truth and lead by example. If they do this, their message will be effective in turning people away from sin and toward God.

O PRIESTS / MALACHI 2:1-4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Malachi 2:1-4

And now, O ye priests, this commandment is for you. If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the Lord of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart. Behold, I will corrupt your seed, and spread dung upon your faces, even the dung of your solemn feasts; and one shall take you away with it. And ye shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you, that my covenant might be with Levi, saith the Lord of hosts.

O PRIESTS / MALACHI 2:1-4

One role of the priests was to pray God’s blessing on the people; but because the priest had corrupted the ministry God had given to them, their “blessings” had become useless curses. They did not honor God by proclaiming His message, and they disgraced His name by living ungodly lifestyles. Because of this, God would disgrace them and curse their ministry.

MY NAME WILL BE GREAT AMONG THE NATIONS / MALACHI 1:11

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Malachi 1:11

For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the Lord of hosts.

MY NAME WILL BE GREAT AMONG THE NATIONS / MALACHI 1:11

Malachi predicts, or foretells, a time when people from all over the world would worship the Lord from their hearts as the only true God (Isaiah 45:22-25; 49:5-7; 59:19). The God of Israel – the God we know from the Bible – would be known and His power recognized around the world. This prophecy is partially being fulfilled now as churches send missionaries to other nations and provide resources for ministry around the world so that others can hear the message about Jesus Christ. One way to show that our faith is true is by assisting in God’s worldwide outreach. We can accomplish this by giving of our time and finances to the ministries and missionaries our local church supports.

PRIESTS WHO SHOW CONTEMPT FOR MY NAME / MALACHI 1:6-8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Malachi 1:6-8

A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the Lord of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name? Ye offer polluted bread upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee? In that ye say, The table of the Lord is contemptible. And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? and if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee, or accept thy person? saith the Lord of hosts.

PRIESTS WHO SHOW CONTEMPT FOR MY NAME / MALACHI 1:6-8

Malachi accuses the spiritual leaders because they were not acting like leaders representing God.

  1. They were showing no respect for God: at the sacrificial offerings to Him animals that were crippled or diseased. This was contrary to God’s law, which required unblemished sacrifices – the best of their flocks and herds (Leviticus 22:22).
  2. As followers of Christ, we must give to God the best we have, not what remains after we have taken or used the best to satisfy our own desires. Our whole life should be a living sacrifice to God (Romans 12:1). The personal time we spend with God in prayer and Bible study should be the prime time of the day, not what remains after we have taken care of everything else or when we are too tired to do anything else. That is why it is beneficial to start the day with “quiet time” in God’s presence.

“The LORD’S table” was the altar used for making the animal sacrifices (the priests were allowed to take their portion of food from the sacrifices made at “the LORD’S table”). God said that it would have been better to make no sacrifices at all than to offer them with disrespect for God (Malachi 1:10). Sacrifices given with unfaithful hearts are not acceptable to God.
