TURN THE HEARTS OF THE FATHERS TO THEIR CHILDREN / MALACHI 4:6

(KJV) Malachi 4:6

And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

TURN THE HEARTS OF THE FATHERS TO THEIR CHILDREN / MALACHI 4:6

The future ministry of the coming prophet is described in terms of bringing families into a right relationship with God and with each other. John the Baptist preached with this as part of his message (Luke 1:17).

  1. Our churches and ministries must place the highest priority on building strong families based on proper authority, faithfulness and love. If we fail to do so, our faithfulness and love. If we fail to do so, our churches will not experience God’s Blessing or the spiritual fulfillment that His Spirit can bring to our lives. The church itself is the family of God, and it must help maintain the integrity (the stability, uprightness and wholeness) of the family unit. 
  2. The ones most responsible for accomplishing this task – keeping families unified and strong – are fathers. Fathers must love their children by praying for them (John 17:1), spending time with them, instructing them about the ungodly ways of the world and diligently teaching them to live by God’s Word and standard. 

Pastors and other ministry leaders today must also make this a goal and purpose in their ministry as they prepare the church for the Lord’s coming (Luke 1:17).

REMEMBER THE LAW / MALACHI 4:4

(KJV) Malachi 4:4

Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.

REMEMBER THE LAW / MALACHI 4:4

Malachi tells God’s people that to survive the day of the Lord (when He comes to judge), they must obey His laws. True faith in God – the thing that really brings us into a right relationship with Him – always includes an attitude of heartfelt obedience to the Lord. Christ’s followers are still required to live by the ethical principles and moral demands of the Old Testament law as well as the commands of Christ (Matthew 5:17). We should do this not simply out of obligation, but out of love and thankfulness to God. Following these regulations cannot save us spiritually; but if we have an authentic personal relationship with Jesus, we will want to do what God desires. As Christians, the Holy Spirit actually gives us the desire and power to do the good things God’s law prescribes.

The day of the Lord – both His first and second coming to earth – will bring spiritual salvation and freedom for all who receive, love and serve Him. In God’s kingdom, Christ’s glory will shine like the rising sun, bringing the light of salvation, goodness, blessing and healing to His people. When Christ comes for the final time, everything will be made right; and God’s people will leap for joy like young calves released to run free at last.

THE DAY IS COMING / MALACHI 4:1

(KJV) Malachi 4:1

For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

THE DAY IS COMING / MALACHI 4:1

“The day” refers both to Christ’s first coming and second coming, although the prophet speaks as if the two comings are a single event. This blending of future events occurs often in Old Testament prophecy (Zechariah 9:9-10). Those who are proud and defy God will not have a place in God’s kingdom (Malachi 3:2-3; Malachi 3:2; Isaiah 66:15; Zephaniah 1:18; 3:8; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11).

Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name.

THOSE WHO FEARED THE LORD / MALACHI 3:16

Although most of the people were unfaithful to God, there were still a few who had not given in to doubt and negative thinking toward God. These few continued to honor God and encouraged others to do the same. 

  1. The Lord promises to keep a permanent record of those who bring honor to Him by the way they live.
  2. This passage assures us that God recognizes and remembers our faithfulness to Him and our love for Him. When we stand before Him at the time of judgment, He will rewire us richly if we have remained devoted to Him.

The people were beginning to feel that there was no benefit to serving God, but they were mistaken in thinking that they could gain God’s approval simply by worshiping Him with outward rituals, when their hearts were not right with Him.

POUR OUT SO MUCH BLESSING / MALACHI 3:10

(KJV) Malachi 3:10

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

POUR OUT SO MUCH BLESSING / MALACHI 3:10

If the people would change their ways, return to God and show their renewed commitment to Him by giving financially to His work and minister, God would pour out far more in blessings (not just financial blessings) than they had given. God expects His people to show their love and loyalty to Him and His work by giving tithes and offerings to promote His purpose on earth. Giving is a privilege that allows God to stretch our faith and to develop greater discipline and responsibility in our lives. The blessings that go along with faithfulness in financial giving will come both in this life and throughout eternity.

WILL A MAN ROB GOD? / MALACHI 3:8

(KJV) Malachi 3:8

Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.

WILL A MAN ROB GOD? / MALACHI 3:8

The people robbed God by failing to bring Him their tithes (one-tenth of their income). God’s law required tithing (Leviticus 27:30) as a means of honoring God and providing for those who served in ministry.

  1. God warned the people that they would face a curse if they selfishly refused to give (Malachi 3:8-9) and promised a blessing if they faithfully supported His work (Malachi 3:10-12).

Because the privilege and responsibility to honor God and the need for ministry has not changed, New Testament believers also are responsible to give in order to support the Lord’s work both in their local community and around the world (2 Corinthians 8:2).

THE DAY OF HIS COMING / MALACHI 3:2

But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap:

THE DAY OF HIS COMING / MALACHI 3:2

The coming of Christ (both the first and second time) would complete the larger plan of God in the history of humankind. Malachi prophecies that Christ will come to purify (Malachi 3:3) and judge (Malachi 3:5). Complete fulfillment of this verse will be at Christ’s second coming, when He will destroy the forces of evil and remove them from the land. Only those who have a right relationship with God will be saved from this complete and final removal of evil (Isaiah 1:15; Ezekiel 22:17-22).

(KJV) Malachi 3:1-5

Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts. 2 But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap: 3 And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness. 4 Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in former years. 5 And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the Lord of hosts.

THE MESSENGER OF THE COVENANT / MALACHI 3:1-5

This “messenger” is Jesus the Messiah. He would establish a new covenant (“life agreement”) with people, making a way for all people, including us, to have a personal and eternal relationship with God. Malachi’s prophecy in this passage has special meaning for both the first and second comings of Christ.
