DO NOT HOLD ON TO ME / JOHN 20:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 20:17

Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.

DO NOT HOLD ON TO ME / JOHN 20:17

This verse probably means, “You can let go of me; I am not going back to my Father quite yet. You will still have the opportunity to see me again.” In the meantime, He has an important task for her; she would be the first to spread the wonderful news of the risen Christ.

TO HIM WHO IS ABLE TO KEEP YOU FROM FALLING / JUDE 1:24-25

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jude 1:24-25

Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, 25 To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

TO HIM WHO IS ABLE TO KEEP YOU FROM FALLING / JUDE 1:24-25

After all of Jude’s sober warnings against the corruption and deception of ungodly people, he concludes by turning positive attention to God and His ability to preserve the faith of those who love, trust and obey Him.

SHOW MERCY, MIXED WITH FEAR / JUDE 1:22-23

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jude 1:22-23

And of some have compassion, making a difference: 23 And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.

SHOW MERCY, MIXED WITH FEAR / JUDE 1:22-23

Jude urges true believers to show mercy, not to the false teachers, but to those who were coming under their deceptive influence and were nearly to the point of spiritual destruction. They should pray for them and try gently but firmly to persuade them to remain loyal to the truth and to their faith (Jude 1:3; Jude 1:20-21; James 5:19-20). But they must also be very careful in the process of trying to help that they themselves do not get caught in the enticement of sin, which is so corrupting that even the clothes of the wicked are described as “stained by corrupted flesh.”

BUILD YOURSELVES UP / JUDE 1:20-21

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jude 1:20

But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.

BUILD YOURSELVES UP / JUDE 1:20-21

True believers must defend and promote the Christian faith and resist false teaching in four ways:

  1. By building ourselves up in our most holy faith. The holy faith is the New Testament revelation handed down by Christ and His original messengers as we have it in the New Testament of God’s Word (Jude 1:3). This requires the diligent study of God’s Word and a determined effort to apply the Bible’s teachings to our lives (Acts 2:42; 20:27; 2 Timothy 2:15; Hebrews 5:12).
  2. By praying in the Spirit. We should communicate and interact with God by relying on the power of the Holy Spirit. This means depending on the Spirit to inspire, guide, energize, sustain and help us pray according to God’s will (1 John 5:14). The Spirit also helps us to do effective spiritual battle as we pray (Romans 8:26, Galatians 4:6; Ephesians 6:18). Praying in the Spirit includes praying with one’s mind (in one’s own language and understanding) and praying with one’s spirit (1 Corinthians 14:14-15).
  3. By remaining under the care and influence of God’s love. This involves faithful obedience to God and His Word (John 15:9-10; 1 John 5:3).
  4. By living with great desire and anticipation for Jesus’ return and the eternal glory that will accompany His return (John 14:2).

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jude 1:19 These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.

FOLLOW MERE NATURAL INSTINCTS / JUDE 1:19

The false teachers claimed to be totally “spiritual,” which is why they showed complete disregard for immoral behavior. They felt that it did not matter what they did with their physical bodies. Ironically, they labeled others as “sensual.” Here, Jude turns their faulty reasoning against them, showing that they are the ones controlled by sensual desire. Rather than being the spiritual ones they claimed to be, Jude says that these corrupt individuals do not have the Spirit of God at all, which means they are not saved (Romans 8:9).

ENOCH … PROPHESIED / JUDE 1:14

Jude may be quoting from the book of Enoch, written prior to 110 B.C., or simply from Jewish tradition. His use of this passage confirms only the truth of Enoch’s prophecy; it does not mean that he endorses the entire book of Enoch.

THESE MEN ARE LIKE / JUDE 1:12-13

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jude 1:12-13 These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; 13 Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.

THESE MEN ARE LIKE / JUDE 1:12-13

These verses describe the corrupt teachers using six metaphors, or symbolic illustrations:

  1. “Blemishes at your love feasts” (1 Corinthians 11:21, 27; 2 Peter 2:13).
  2. “Shepherds who feed only themselves” – They were not feeding the flock (the people) for whom they were responsible a leader (Ezekiel 34:8-10).
  3. “Clouds without rain” – They promised refreshing truth but left people spiritually dry.
  4. “Autumn trees without fruit and uprooted” – Trees in that season should have been full of fruit, but they were spiritually dead.
  5. “Wild waves of the sea” – They were tossed by the winds of false belief, churning up moral filth and corruption.
  6. “Wandering stars” – Like shooting stars that appear for a moment but then disappear into darkness, these ungodly individuals will be shut out from God’s presence forever.

TWICE DEAD / JUDE 1:12

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jude 1:12

These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

TWICE DEAD / JUDE 1:12

The apostate teachers (spiritually rebellious, faithless, broken off from relationship with God) who have positioned themselves among the believers to whom Jude is writing are “twice dead” (Greek dis apothanonta). Literally, Jude is saying these imposters are “twice dying” or “twice having died.” This seems to say that at least some of the false teachers were once believers in Christ who had “crossed over from death to life” (John 5:24) but had sometime afterward turned away from God by rejecting their union with Christ. As a result, they had abandoned true life and crossed back into spiritual death, which is separation from God (Ephesians 2:1; Romans 8:13).

WAY OF CAIN … BALAAM’S ERROR … KORAH’S REBELLION / JUDE 1:11

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jude 1:11

Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.

WAY OF CAIN … BALAAM’S ERROR … KORAH’S REBELLION / JUDE 1:11

Cain the first child of Adam and Eve, was known for his hidden sin, outward disobedience and as the first murderer (Genesis 4:3-8; Genesis 4:3-5; Genesis 4:7); he was ultimately cursed by God (Genesis 4:9-14; Genesis:4:10; Genesis 4:11-12). Baalam was a false prophet, driven by pride and greed at the expense of God’s people (Numbers 25:2; 31:16; 2 Peter 2:15). Korah caused dissension among the Israelites and led a rebellion against the godly leader, Moses, that ended in Korah’s destruction (Numbers 16:1-3, 31-35). The false teachers of Jude’s time possessed these same ungodly traits and would suffer similar destruction.
