THEY WILL FIGHT AGAINST YOU / JEREMIAH 1:19

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jeremiah 1:19

And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee; for I am with thee, saith the LORD, to deliver thee.

THEY WILL FIGHT AGAINST YOU / JEREMIAH 1:19

God told Jeremiah that Judah’s kings, officials, priests and even the people would stand against him, opposing the message God had called him to proclaim (Jeremiah 1:18). But the prophet was encouraged to speak out boldly and to stand firm in his convictions. God promised to be with him and assured him that his enemies would not overcome him. God always stands with His faithful servants who speak the truth to those who forsake God and His Word and follow the ways of this world.

A FORTIFIED CITY AN IRON PILLAR / JEREMIAH 1:18

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jeremiah 1:18

For, behold, I have made thee this day a defenced city, and an iron pillar, and brasen walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land.

A FORTIFIED CITY AN IRON PILLAR / JEREMIAH 1:18

Though Jeremiah was a sensitive and humble young man, God gave him a supernatural boldness, enabling him to become perhaps the strongest and bravest of all the prophets. He certainly endured more rejection than any other Old Testament prophet. He never really experienced a positive response to his message. This shows that God can use us in ways far beyond our own natural tendencies and abilities.

FROM THE NORTH DISASTER / JEREMIAH 1:14

(KJV) Jeremiah 1:14
Then the LORD said unto me, Out of the north an evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land.

FROM THE NORTH DISASTER / JEREMIAH 1:14

This verse refers to the Babylonian military campaigns that were to come against Judah and the siege, or full-force attack, against Jerusalem (when the Babylonians surrounded the city, cutting it off from outside help and supplies; 2 Kings 24:1; 25:1). Through this invasion from the north, God would bring an end to their offering sacrifices to false gods and worshiping idols, which they had made with their own hands (Jeremiah 1:16).

BRANCH OF AN ALMOND TREE / JERMIAH 1:11

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jeremiah 1:11

Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree.

BRANCH OF AN ALMOND TREE / JERMIAH 1:11

In ancient Israel, the almond tree was the first tree to bud in the spring. This vision suggested two things:

  1. The word of the Lord spoken through Jeremiah would be fulfilled rapidly and
  2. the people would recognize that God was alive and was guiding the course of history to fulfill His purposes (Number 17:1-10).

TO UPROOT AND TEAR DOWN / JEREMIAH 1:10

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jeremiah 1:10

See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant.

TO UPROOT AND TEAR DOWN / JEREMIAH 1:10

Jeremiah’s message contained elements of both warning (about judgment) and hope (for restoration). However, because of his place in Judah’s history, Jeremiah’s message focused primarily on judgment and doom. The corrupt nation of Israel had to be torn down before God could rebuild and restore it to its former glory and its place in God’s plan. The northern kingdom of Israel already had fallen (to the Assyrians in 722 B.C.) as a result of their constant rebellion and God’s judgment. Now the southern kingdom of Judah was headed toward a similar disaster (2 Kings 17; 2 Kings 25).

BEFORE I FORMED YOU … I KNEW YOU / JEREMIAH 1:5

(KJV) Jeremiah 1:5

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

BEFORE I FORMED YOU … I KNEW YOU / JEREMIAH 1:5

Before Jeremiah was born, God had already determined that he would be a prophet. Just as God had a plan for Jeremiah’s life, He also has a specific plan for every person’s life. His goal is for humankind to live according to those plans, allowing Him to fulfill His purposes in and through us. But just as it was with Jeremiah, living by God’s plan may involve difficulty and suffering. But no matter what we encounter as we follow God, He always works for our greatest good (Romans 8:28).

JEREMIAH / JEREMIAH 1:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jeremiah 1:1

The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin:

JEREMIAH / JEREMIAH 1:1

Jeremiah was called (appointed, directed, empowered, made aware of his purpose) by God to be a prophet – a spokesperson to communicate God’s future plans and purposes for His people. Jeremiah’s message and ministry were to the southern kingdom of Judah (divided from the northern kingdom of Israel around 930 B.C.; see 2 Kings 12 – 14; 2 Chronicles 10 – 11. Jeremiah ministered during the last 40 years of Judah’s history, including the time right before and after Jerusalem’s destruction and the sending of God’s people into captivity in Babylon (627 – 586 B.C). He ministered during the reigns of Josiah, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin and Zedekiah. Suring most of that time, the nation was rebelling against God and relying on political alliances with other nations for security and protection from its enemies. Jermiah urged the people to repent – to turn from their own defiant ways and renew their devotion to God. He continued to warn them that they certainly would suffer punishment for rejecting God and His law. Because of his message and his devotion to the Lord, Jeremiah experienced much opposition and suffering at the hands of his fellow citizens and the nation’s leadership.

MY WORDS IN YOUR MOUTH / JEREMIAH 1:9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jeremiah 1:9

Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth.

MY WORDS IN YOUR MOUTH / JEREMIAH 1:9

The Lord assures Jeremiah that his prophetic message would be God-inspired. The message would come directly from the Lord, and what the prophet said would be exactly what God intended. Literally, Jeremiah’s wors would be God’s wors (Romans 10:8). Fully convinced of this, Jeremiah never compromised, backed down or tried to change the meaning of God’s Word to the people (Jeremiah 37:16-17).

DO NOT BE AFRAID / JEREMIAH 1:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jeremiah 1:8

Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD.

DO NOT BE AFRAID / JEREMIAH 1:8

Jeremiah was a youth at the time God first revealed His plan of making the young man aware of His life’s mission. He was to deliver a difficult message for God. At first, Jeremiah experienced great anxiety and fear at the overwhelming thought and responsibility of delivering God’s Word to the leaders of Judah (Jeremiah 1:7). God responded to Jeremiah’s concerns by promising to be with him and to empower him for his God-given purpose. No matter what task God gives you in life, He promises to be with you always and help you accomplish it if you remain strong in your faith and devotion to Him. We must also remember that we are never too young – or too old – for God to begin using us in a meaningful and powerful way.
