HUSBANDS – SO THAT NOTHING WILL HINDER YOUR PRAYERS / 1 PETER 3:7

HUSBANDS

Peter mentions three things about which husbands should be concerned in their relationships with their wives.

  1. The husband must be considerate and understanding, always showing a self-sacrificing, Christlike love for His wife, as directed in God’s Word (Ephesians 5:25-33; Colossians 3:19; Ephesians 5:21).
  2. The husband should treat his wife with respect as an equal heir of God’s gracious salvation and inheritance of eternal life. The husband must honor, provide for and protect his wife according to the wife’s needs. “Weaker” probably refers to the woman’s physical strength. The husband must help his wife fulfill her full potential in relationship with God.
  3. A husband must take the lead in submitting his own interests and concerns for the good of his wife and family. He must praise and highly treasure his wife, giving her every reason to love and help him according to God’s purposes for their marriage and family (1 Peter 3:1-6; Ephesians 5:23).
  4. A husband must never abuse his wife or treat her improperly in any way – physically, emotionally or spiritually. Peter teaches that a husband who fails to live with his wife in an understanding way and to give her proper honor as a child of God will damage his own relationship with God by creating a barrier between his prayers and God (Colossians 3:19).

SO THAT NOTHING WILL HINDER YOUR PRAYERS

Disunity and contention between husbands and wives not only affect their relationship with each other, but they also affect each of their personal relationships with God. In particular, it can block the effectiveness of their prayers, hindering God’s help and provision in their lives. Notice that God holds the husband primarily accountable for maintaining peace in the home.

BEAUTY … OF YOUR INNER SELF / 1 PETER 3:3-4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Peter 3:3-4

BEAUTY … OF YOUR INNER SELF / 1 PETER 3:3-4

True feminine beauty is not dependent on outward appearance. Fine jewelry and fashionable clothes may impress others, but they do not impress God. In fact, if such things are given priority or taken to extremes, they can actually cause a person to defy God’s standard of modesty – both in the sense of humility and personal purity (1 Timothy 2:9).

  1. True beauty is a matter of inner loveliness and the enduring charm of a “gentle and quiet spirit,” which is precious to God because it follows Jesus’ example (Matthew 11:29; 21:5). (a) The adjective “gentle” describes a humble, unassuming character that always show loving concern for others and puts aside selfish interests for the good of others (Matthew 5:5; 2 Corinthians 10:1; Galatians 5:23; Philippians 2:3; Philippians 2:5). (b) The adjective “quiet” refers to an attitude or behavior that is not offensive or disruptive. That is to say, God wants outward behavior to reflect inner character, which is what matters most to Him.
  2. Christian wives must remain loyal to Christ and His Word and to their husbands and families. Such loyalty will be tested in a world governed by materialism, self-assertion, seductive fashions, obsession with sex and contempt for the values of home and family.

HUSBANDS … MAYBE WON OVER / 1 PETER 3:1

Peter instructs a Christian wife how to conduct herself in order to influence her husband to accept Christ.

  1. She must be submissive to her husband (willing to yield her own rights for his sake), recognizing his God-given role of leadership in the family and helping him to fulfill it. (Ephesians 5:22).
  2. She must conduct herself in a pure and respectful manner, with a gentle and peaceful spirit (1 Peter 3:2-4; 1 Timothy 2:13, 15).
  3. She must attempt to influence her husband to accept and follow Christ more by her behavior than by her words.

BORE OUR SINS / 1 PETER 2:24

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Peter 2:24

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

BORE OUR SINS / 1 PETER 2:24

When Christ suffered and died, He was not just setting an example of love and suffering; He was taking our place and paying our penalty for sin (Isaiah 53:4, 11-12). We deserve death for our defiance against God, but Christ has already paid that penalty, becoming our substitute and taking on Himself the punishment for our sins when He gave His life on the cross (1 Peter 3:18; John 1:29; Hebrews 9:28; 10:10). The purpose of His death for us was “so that we might die to sins” (1 Peter 2:24-25; Romans 6:1-8), which means that we can be free from sin’s guilt and control and unresponsive to its influence (Romans 6:11). By His death, Christ opened the way by which we can return to God and receive a right relationship with Him (Romans 3:24-26). In addition, Christ’s sacrifice provides the grace (the undeserved favor, love and enablement) to obey God and to do what is right by His standard (Romans 6:2-3; 2 Corinthians 5:15; Galatians 2:20). Peter uses the word “healed” in relation to salvation with all its benefits because Christ’s sacrifice was complete, providing relief and restoration spiritually, physically, emotionally and in every way that we need (Isaiah 53:5; Matthew 8:16-17).

CHRIST SUFFERED … FOLLOW IN HIS STEPS / 1 PETER 2:21

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Peter 2:21

For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

CHRIST SUFFERED … FOLLOW IN HIS STEPS / 1 PETER 2:21

Jesus Christ is the highest example of one who suffered evil for doing good. For those who follow His example, their sufferings are actually transformed into opportunities to identify with their Savior. They recognize that the highest honor and privilege of any believer is to suffer for the cause of Christ and to spread His message (Matthew 5:10). In suffering for doing good, Christians follow the example of Christ and the apostles – those He originally sent with His authority to deliver His message and help establish His New Testament church (Isaiah 53; Matthew 16:21; Matthew 20:28; Acts 9:16; Hebrews 5:8).

  1. Christians must be willing to suffer (1 Peter 4:1; 2 Corinthians 11:23-29), particularly to share in the sufferings of Christ (1 Peter 4:13; 2 Corinthians 1:5; Philippians 3:10). They should expect difficulty and suffering to be a part of their service to God 2 Corinthians 4:10-12; 1 Corinthians 11:1).
  2. Suffering for Christ is called suffering “according to God’s will” (1 Peter 4:19), for His “name” (Acts 9:16), “for the gospel” (2 Timothy 1:8), “for what is right” (1 Peter 3:14) and for “the kingdom of God” (2 Thessalonians 1:5).
  3. Suffering for Christ is a way to develop spiritual maturity (Hebrews 2:10), to obtain God’s blessing (1 Peter 4:14) and to relate to and minister to others (2 Corinthians 4:10-12). Sharing in Christ’s suffering prepares us to share in His glory (Romans 8:17-18). In this sense, suffering for good should be seen as a precious gift from God (1 Peter 2:19; Philippians 1:29).
  4. In living for Christ and helping to spread His message, we should not look for trouble or purposely pursue the most difficult ways. Yet, we must be willing and prepared to experience and endure suffering, understanding that difficulties come to those who walk in devotion to Christ.

Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

LIVE SUCH GOOD LIVES AMONG THE PAGANS / 1 PETER 2:12

As Christians, our lives should stand out in a positive way from people in the world who do not follow Christ (Philippians 2:15). Our aim is not to be different simply for the sake of being different or to isolate ourselves from the rest of society; rather, our goal is to reflect Christ’s character and shine His light in spiritually dark places (Matthew 5:14-16; Titus 2:8). Most people are still searching for satisfaction and significance in life. If we can reflect God’s uncommon and undeniable peace and purpose, people will take notice. Some will be inspired to consider the claims of Christ for themselves. Others may reject or mistreat us; but sometimes those who give Christians the hardest time are the most serious about finding something that is real and worth living and dying for. As a result, they will put believers to the test to see if what they have is worth holding on to. We must treat such people with special grace and show them that following Christ means more than anything else in life.

ALIENS AND STRANGERS / 1 PETER 2:11

As followers of Christ, our new designation as God’s own possession sets us apart from the corrupt ways of this world. We are part of Christ’s kingdom, which “is not of this world” (John 18:36). We are not identified with, nor do we give in to the deceptive and destructive influences of the surrounding society. For now, we live in a country to which we do not belong; we are simply passing through on the way to “a better country” (Hebrews 11:16). Our true citizenship is with Christ in heaven (Philippians 3:20-21; Hebrews 11:9-16); therefore, we must not conform to the world’s pattern and practices (Romans 12:2).

Just as the Israelites were called God’s chosen people in the Old Testament, all followers of Christ today are considered chosen (1 Peter 1:2). All believers collectively are set apart (as a whole group, the “church”) for God and His kingdom purposes (Acts 20:28; Titus 2:14). As “a holy nation,” they are to reflect His glory and to spread His message of salvation in a way that brings honor and praise to Him (Exodus 19:6; Isaiah 42:1).

And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

A ROCK THAT MAKES THEM FALL / 1 PETER 2:8

Those who accept Christ, yield their lives to Him and base their lives on His principles and purposes are like living stones, built into a spiritual house of God (1 Peter 2:5). However, those who reject Christ will stumble and fall over His truth and standards and will ultimately be broken and crushed by His judgment (Luke 20:17-18Luke 2:34Isaiah 8:14). This does not mean that God destined certain people for destruction; rather, it means that unbelief, as a choice of one’s own free will, is destined to result in eternal destruction.

A HOLY PRIESTHOOD / 1 PETER 2:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Peter 2:5

Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

A HOLY PRIESTHOOD / 1 PETER 2:5

In the Old Testament, the priesthood was restricted to a qualified minority – only descendants of Aaron from the Israelite tribe (family line) of Levi. Their unique responsibility was to offer sacrifices to God on behalf of His people and to make communication between God and His people possible (Exodus 28:1; 2 Chronicles 29:11). Now, through Jesus Christ, every true Christian has been made a priest to God (Revelation 1:6; 5:10; Revelation 20:6). The priesthood of all true believers means the following:

  1. All believers have direct access to God through Christ (1 Peter 3:18; John 14:6; Ephesians 2:18).
  2. All true believers are obligated to live holy lives (1 Peter 2:5, 9; 1 Peter 1:16).
  3. All true believers must offer “spiritual sacrifices” to God, including: (a) living in obedience to God and refusing to conform to the pattern of the world (Romans 12:1–2); (b) praying to and praising God (Psalms 50:14; Hebrews 13:15); (c)serving God with whole hearts and willing hands (1 Chronicles 28:9; Ephesians 5:1-2; Philippians 2:17-18); (d) performing good works (Hebrews 13:16); (e) giving of our material possessions (Romans 12:13; Philippians 4:18); (f) presenting our bodies to God as instruments of righteousness (to do what is right according to God’s standards, plans and purposes (Romans 6:13, 19).
  4. All true believers are to intercede (pray for others’ needs and concerns) for one another and for all people (Colossians 4:12; 1 Timothy 2:1; Revelation 8:3).
  5. All true believers are responsible to defend God’s Word, spread Christ’s message and pray for its effect on people (1 Peter 2:9; 3:15; Acts 4:31; 1 Corinthians 14:26; 2 Thessalonians 3:1).
