(KJV) 1 Corinthians 6:1

Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?

BEFORE THE UNGODLY / 1 CORINTHIANS 6:1

When Christians disagree on trivial or insignificant issues (1 Corinthians 6:2), they should be settled within the church and not in courts of law. The church must be capable of judging the right or wrong involved, making a fair decision and exercising godly discipline, if needed (Matthew 18:15).

  1. This teaching does not mean that a Christian may not use courts in serious cases with unbelievers. Paul himself appealed to the judicial system more than once (Acts 16:37-39; 25:10-12).
  2. By implying that Christians might sometimes be better off overlooking others’ offenses against them (1 Corinthians 6:7), Paul is certainly not encouraging church members to unlawfully abuse or mistreat the innocent, such as widows, children or the disadvantaged. Rather, Paul was speaking of issues where there was not a clear answer to the offense. Openly harmful actions must not be tolerated, but offenses within the church body should be handled according to Christ’s instruction in Matthew 18:15-17.
  3. In addition, in cases where a “brother” who is no longer faithful in his relationship with God has divorced or deserted his family and refuses to support his wife and children, a mother with the right motives and concern for her kids may take action in the courts. Paul is not advocating that those who neglect their social or civil responsibilities or who break the law be allowed to cheat and threaten the life or well-being of others. His statement in 1 Corinthians 6:8 indicates he is speaking of minor disputes where the offense could be excused and tolerated.
