We have had our share of up and downs but I'm forever grateful that he is the man God blessed me with. I am happy to report we have been married for 25 years. I love this space on the internet. Over the last several years, I have wrestled with my purpose, struggled with various sins, survived some severe injuries, and was diagnosed with severe illnesses that have stopped me in my tracks. Although these dark times have been tough, my walk with God and family has proven to be so fulfilling and sweet, regardless of any earthly circumstance. Christ is enough! DETESTABLE WAYS OF THE NATIONS / DEUTERONOMY 18:9-11

DETESTABLE WAYS OF THE NATIONS / DEUTERONOMY 18:9-11

These verses contain a list of occult magic practices, common in the religions of Canaan. These things were an abomination (disgraceful evil) to God and forbidden by Him. Those among God’s Old Testament people who practiced such things were to be put to death (Leviticus 20:27). The New Testament declares that those who practice such things will not enter God’s kingdom (Galatians 5:20-21; Galatians 5:21; Revelation 22:15).

THE SERPENT DECEIVED ME / GENESIS 3:13

THE SERPENT DECEIVED ME / GENESIS 3:13

Satan used deception to cause the downfall of the human race. This is one of his main methods for leading people away from God and truth.

  1. The Bible teaches that Satan deceives and blinds the minds of those who do not believe God so that they may not understand the gospel, which is the true message about Christ (2 Corinthians 4:4).
  2. Satan deceives some people within the church who think they can live immoral lives and still maintain their relationship with God. They are spiritually blind in thinking that they still have a part in God’s kingdom (1 Corinthians 6:9; Galatians 5:21).
  3. Deception will be Satan’s primary means of leading many to rebel against God at the end of history (2 Thessalonians 2:8-12; Revelation 20:8).
  4. All Christians must be committed through ongoing life-and-death struggles against Satan’s deception. He will work to destroy their personal lives, marriages, families, schools, churches and work (Matthew 24:4, 11, 24; Ephesians 6:11).

THEY HID / GENESIS 3:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 3:8

And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.

THEY HID / GENESIS 3:8

The awareness and guilt of sin caused Adam and Eve to avoid God. They were now afraid and uncomfortable in His presence. They realized that they had displeased God by defying His will. This sinful condition robbed them of the confidence to be close to God (Acts 23:1; 24:16). In our sinful condition, we too are like Adam and Eve. However, God has provided a way to cleanse our guilty consciences (our inner awareness of what is morally good and right), free us from sin and restore our relationship with Him. This “way” to a renewed relationship with God is through His Son, Jesus Christ (John 14:6). Jesus came to earth and eventually gave His perfect life to pay the full penalty for our sin. Because of what Jesus did for us, we do not have to turn away and hide from God. Instead, we can come to Him with confidence that we will receive love, mercy, grace and help in times of need (Hebrews 4:16; 7:25).

THE SEVENTH ANGEL SOUNDED / REVELATION 11:15

(KJV) Revelation 11:15

And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

THE SEVENTH ANGEL SOUNDED / REVELATION 11:15

The sounding of the seventh trumpet brings shouts of victory and the announcement that the world has become the kingdom of Christ, and He will reign forever (Revelation 20:4; Ezekiel 21:26-27; Daniel 2:44; 4:3; 6:26; Zechariah 14:9). In other words, the seventh trumpet involves events extending all the way to Christ’s return, including the judgments of the seven bowls (beginning in Revelation 16) and the victory that follows. This trumpet could not be the “last trumpet” of 1 Corinthians 15:52 and 1 Thessalonians 4:16, which signals the rapture of the church (when Christ’s followers are suddenly taken from the earth to heaven). That trumpet will be the last one before God’s tribulation judgments begin, and it is evident that these judgments are well underway before the sounding of this seventh trumpet. The sound of this trumpet is followed by a parenthetical passage, or pause, that reveals further background and details regarding specific events related to the tribulation period (Revelation 12:1-15:4).

TERROR STRUCK THOSE WHO SAW THEM / REVELATION 11:11

And after three days and an half the spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.

TERROR STRUCK THOSE WHO SAW THEM / REVELATION 11:11

Though the bodies of the two witnesses have lain dead in the streets for over three days, probably somewhat disfigured by now, God breathes His creative life into them, and they are restored to complete vitality. This will be a sign that the reign of the antichrist and the persistence of evil will be short-lived. Because of the miraculous resurrection of the two witnesses (Revelation 11:11-12) and God’s judgment (Revelation 11:13), fear will grip people, and they will realize that there is no match for God’s power. His enemies will even witness the voice from heaven and the ascension of the two men (Revelation 11:12). The events that immediately follow will further demonstrate God’s miraculous power and authority overall. None of this, however, will cause people as a whole to turn to God (Revelation 9:20), though some who witness these events will receive the message of the two witnesses and give honor to God (Revelation 11:13).

For those who view the witnesses as symbolizing the church and its influence in end-time society (Revelation 11:3), this event is sometimes viewed as the point when the rapture of the church takes place (when Christ’s followers are caught up from the earth to meet Him in the air and go to heaven with Him). Again, this view would mean that the church is not taken from the world until part way through the tribulation period (a mid-tribulation rapture). Such a view differs from the primary position of this study Bible, which sees the church (all faithful followers of Christ) being suddenly taken from the world prior to the beginning of the seven-year tribulation period (a pre-tribulation rapture; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).

THE INHABITANTS OF THE EARTH WILL GLOAT / REVELATION 11:9

(KJV) Revelation 11:9

And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.

THE INHABITANTS OF THE EARTH WILL GLOAT / REVELATION 11:9

Some suppose that through television or some form of media that all people of the world will see the dead bodies of the two men lying in the city streets. Though this will certainly be possible, it does not actually say that everyone will see them, but simply that people “of” (from, out of) all people groups and nationalities will see, perhaps those from the city who are in the immediate area and able to observe what has taken place firsthand. Still, the news of the death of the two witnesses will certainly flash around the world, causing widespread celebration – like a worldwide Christmas party (even with the giving of gifts) – without Christ. God’s message from the witnesses must have cut to people’s hearts and stirred up great guilt in their consciences for them to feel such relief, even joy, over their deaths. But when it appears that the antichrist has prevailed, people will feel free to carry on with their wicked ways without fear of judgment.

THE BEAST … KILL THEM / REVELATION 11:7

(KJV) Revelation 11:7

And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.

THE BEAST … KILL THEM / REVELATION 11:7

The two witnesses are killed because they brought the prophetic truth of Christ (Revelation 19:10) to an ungodly antichrist audience, speaking out boldly against the sins of the people. Jerusalem is called “Sodom” because of its immoral conduct and “Egypt” because of its worldliness (Revelation 11:8). The beast is the antichrist (Revelation 13:1; 14:9, 11; 15:2; 16:2; 17:13, 13: 19:20; 20:10), or the “man of lawlessness” (2 Thessalonians 2:3-10). Note that the two witnesses were not killed until they finished their work. This is true of all of God’s servants who remain faithful to Him. (Interpreters who view the witnesses as representing the church’s presence in the end-time world [Revelation 11:3] see this act as a description of the antichrist abolishing the church’s freedom and severely persecuting and killing Christians.)

OLIVE TREES … LAMPSTANDS / REVELATION 11:4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV Revelation 11:4)

These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.

OLIVE TREES … LAMPSTANDS / REVELATION 11:4

“The two olive trees” here represent the oil of anointing (commissioning, empowering) of the Holy Spirit flowing through God’s servants (Zechariah 4:3, regarding a similar description of the Sprit’s anointing upon Zerubbabel, the governor, and Joshua, the high priest). In Revelation, the “lampstands” symbolize the churches of Jesus Christ (Revelation 1:12-13, 20; Zechariah 4:2). By using this language, John says that the two witnesses will be greatly empowered by the Holy Spirit in order to fulfill God’s mission and reveal the light of God’s truth through both words and miraculous signs (Zechariah 4:2-14). In other words, they will proclaim a full and clear message from God so that no one will have an excuse to deny the truth.

MY TWO WITNESSES / REVELATION 11:3

(KJV) Revelation 11:3

And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.

MY TWO WITNESSES / REVELATION 11:3

The Greek tense changes here to the future so as to indicate what will happen during the “42 months” just mentioned. Though the interpretation of this chapter is among the most difficult in Revelation, it appears that God will send two witnesses to preach the message of Christ and prophesy about the future. They will possess great supernatural power (Revelation 11:5-6) and perform their ministry in the power of the Holy Spirit. They will be a great threat to the antichrist and the entire wicked world for a period of 1,260 days, counteracting the deceptive signs and wonders performed by the prophets of the antichrist (Revelation 13:13-14). The two witnesses have the power of both Moses and Elijah (Malachi 4:5).

Note that some interpreters do not necessarily regard these witnesses as two literal individuals. Instead, they see them as representative of God’s law (given through Moses) and the prophets (Elijah), who challenged people in regard to their relationship with God and who spoke of things that would be fulfilled through Jesus Christ. Those who hold this view often regard these witnesses as representing the church (particularly bold, testifying believers) in the last days. The church’s presence would bring spiritual conviction (exposing sin and convincing people of their guilt in relation to God), and its ministry would directly challenge the antichrist’s evil purposes. This view would mean that the church is still in the world (Christ has not yet taken His followers to heaven through the rapture) for at least part way into the seven-year period of the antichrist’s rise to power (Revelation 11:11).
