For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.

Paul uses actual historical events to illustrate the difference between the old and new covenants. Hagar (who had Abrahm’s first son, Ishmael, who was not the child of God’s promise; Genesis 16) represents the old covenant established at Mount Sinai (Galatians 4:25; Exodus 19:2; 20:1-17). Hagar’s children are like those who now live under the old covenant way of life and are “born in the ordinary way” (Galatians 4:23). That is, they represent those who have not been “born of the Spirit” (John 3:8). Sarah, Abraham’s wife who gave birth to Isaac, the child of God’s promise (Genesis 21:1-7), represents the new covenant. In a spiritual sense, her children are true children of God who are “born by the power of the Spirit” (Galatians 4:29).
