And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

WHAT MY FATHER HAS PROMISED / LUKE 24:49

This promise that would bring “power from on high” refers to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit (when God generously sent His Spirit to fill and empower His followers) that began at Pentecost (Acts 1:4; Acts 2:4). We find this promise recorded in the Old Testament (Isaiah 32:15; 44:3; Ezekiel 39:29: Joel 2:28) and in the New Testament (John 14:16-17, 26; 15:26; 16:7; Acts 1:4-8; Acts 2:33; Acts 2:38; Acts 2:39). The disciples devoted themselves to united and continued prayer as they waited for the fulfillment of the promise (Acts 1:14). Christ’s followers today who desire the baptism in the Holy spirit should do the same. After all, we need the same power and direction as they did in the early New Testament church to spread Christ’s message and do His work in our own communities and throughout the world.

REPENTANCE AND FORGIVENESS OF SINS

Believers were not to preach about forgiveness of sins without the demand for repentance. A preacher is delivering a false gospel if he or she offers salvation on the basis of an easy faith or by a simple belief in Christ’s work without a commitment to turn from one’s own way and obey His Word. Repentance involves a complete change of attitude toward God and a change of direction in life. A person must admit and turn from his or her own sinful, rebellious way, leaving it behind to fully pursue God’s purposes. This has always been a central part of the true gospel – the “good news” of forgiveness and new life through faith in Christ as revealed in the New Testament (Matthew 3:2).

TO ALL NATIONS

Christ Himself institutes Christian missions (taking and sending His message to those in other areas, nations and cultures throughout the world) as a primary and mandatory (required) task of the church. Missions is a main theme in both the Old Testament (Genesis 22:15-18; 1 Kings 8:41-43; Psalms 72:8-11; Isaiah 2:3; 45:22-25) and the New Testament (Matthew 28:19; Acts 1:8; 28:28; Ephesians 2:14-17; Ephesians 2:18).

He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,

HE HAS RISEN! / LUKE 24:6

Jesus’ resurrection (Matthew 28:6) is confirmed by the following facts.

  1. The empty tomb. If Jesus’ enemies had taken His body, they surely would have displayed it to prove He had not risen. They actually did all they could to prevent and to cover up the message of the resurrection (Matthew 27:62-66; 28:11-15). If the disciples had taken His body, they would have never sacrificed their lives and possessions for what they knew to be a lie. The empty tomb reveals that Jesus did rise from the dead and truly is the Son of God.
  2. The existence, power, joy and devotion of people in the early church. If Jesus had not risen and appeared to them, they would have never changed from an attitude of sorrow and despair (following Jesus’ death) to extraordinary joy, courage and hope (Luke 24:52-53).
  3. The writing of the New Testament Men who devoted and sacrificed their lives for the truth Jesus taught wrote the New Testament. They would never have taken the trouble to write about a Savior whose ministry had ended in death and disillusionment (1 Corinthians 15:12-19).
  4. The baptism in the Holy Spirit and the Spirit’s gifts (God-given abilities for individuals to build up the church and benefit others) at work within the church. The outpouring of the Holy spirit at Pentecost (when God generously sent His Spirit to fill and empower His followers) is proof that Jesus had risen and had returned to His place of honor with His Father in heaven (Acts 1:3-5; 2:33). If Christ had not risen, there would have been no such evidence of the Spirit’s power (John 16:7), and the Spirit would not be active in the church today with the primary purpose of bringing honor to the risen Christ (John 16:8-15). 
  5. The lives changed and renewed by Christ. Millions of people throughout the last 2,000 years have experienced Jesus’ life-transforming presence in their own hearts and lives through the power and witness of the Holy Spirit.

(KJV) 2 John 1:10

If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:

DO NOT … WELCOME HIM / 2 JOHN 1:10

A Christians’ love for and faithfulness to Christ and God’s Word must guide them in their assessment of anyone who claims to believe in Christ yet is not committed to the “teaching of Christ” and His original New Testament messengers (2 John 1:9). Those whose teaching distorts, contradicts or opposes authentic New Testament faith and teaching (as we now have it in the Bible) must not be received into the Christian community. 

  1. God warns true believers to guard against accepting false teaching (2 John 1:8) because “many deceivers … have gone out into the world” (2 John 1:7).
  2. Christ’s followers must consider all supposed Christian teachers who do not teach the truth about Christ and do not stick to the message in His Word to be teachers who do not have God (2 John 1:9) and who are condemned by God (Galatians 1:9).
  3. God commands His people not to give encouragement, loyalty or financial support to such teachers. To do so is to share in their “wicked work” of deception (2 John 1:11).
  4. John’s authoritative words, inspired by the Holy Spirit, may seem harsh to some in the church today who may feel that John’s warning lacks a loving attitude or a spirit of unity. But these are God-given words of wisdom and revelation aimed at preserving people’s faith in the truth and authority of God’s Word. Taking this message seriously will keep people from being spiritually deceived and destroyed by those who are not loyal to God’s truth.

Those who reject the original revelation of Christ and the teaching of the apostles (those He personally authorized to deliver His message as we now have it in the Bible) reject God Himself. Although they may claim to know God (1 John 2:4), they are deceived if they do not teach and live by the truth of Christ. Those who abandon Christ’s teaching abandon Christ Himself. All teaching and beliefs about God that do not hold to the truth and standards revealed in the New Testament are not truly Christian and must be rejected (Galatians 5:7; Ephesians 2:20).

For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

MANY DECEIVERS / 2 JOHN 1:7

John warns that many deceivers and false teachers are perverting (twisting or changing the meaning of) the message of God’s Word and attempting to persuade Christians to accept their views. Their false teaching concerns the person of Jesus Christ. They deny that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, born of a virgin (Matthew 1:18; Luke 1:27). They deny that His sacrificial death provides forgiveness for the sins of all who accept Him by faith and entrust their lives to Him (1 John 2:2; 1 John 4:9-10). And they deny that He is “the true God and eternal life” (1 John 5:20). For further background on these false teachers, see 1 John 2:18; 1 John 4:2; 1 John 5:6).

Receiving God’s grace (undeserved favor, help and spiritual enablement), mercy and peace means we accept the responsibility to guard the truth (2 John 1:7-11) and to love others (2 John 1:5-6). To fail to do either will cause the church to lose God’s blessings.

CHOSEN LADY – I LOVE IN THE TRUTH / 2 JOHN 1:1-2

(KJV) 2 John 1:1-2

The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth; 2 For the truth’s sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.

CHOSEN LADY

Some take this to mean that John’s letter was addressed to a godly woman, possibly named Kyria (Greek, meaning “lady”), and her family. However, the term “chosen lady and her children” is most likely a figurative way of saying” the church and its members” (1 Peter 5:13).

I LOVE IN THE TRUTH

John loves and cares for others in a way that follows Jesus’ example and is consistent with what the New Testament reveals about Jesus Christ. It is certainly possible to love others, yet not be committed to the truth of God’s Word. People who do this are placing love, acceptance, friendship, unity and good works above the truth and commands of God (2 John 1:5-6). But it is also possible for a person in the church to promote Biblical truth and defend the Bible’s teachings yet not show active love and concern for others. What God requires is that we show both love for His truth and love for others. We must speak – and show- the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15; 1 Corinthians 13:6).
