THE MAN WAS CURED / JOHN 5:9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 5:9-10

And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath. 10 The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.

THE MAN WAS CURED / JOHN 5:9

Jesus often healed as a direct response to the faith of individuals. In this case, however, He required no faith at all; the man was cured merely by Jesus’ words. Even today people may be healed according to God’s purpose even apart from a specific act of faith in Christ. The Bible teaches that there are three points of contact for healing faith:

  1. The faith of the one being healed (Matthew 9:27-29).
  2. The faith of others on behalf of the one who needs healing (Matthew 8:5-10; 17:15-20; James 5:14-16).
  3. The faith of one who is empowered to deliver gifts of healing (1 Corinthians 12:9).

And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.

THIRTY-EIGHT YEARS / JOHN 5:5

Having suffered for thirty-eight years, this man had experienced lingering disappointment at not being healed, while repeatedly looking to God in expectation. Yet healing finally came. Jesus, moved with compassion for this man who has suffered for so very long, chose to help him. While you may not understand why relief or a miracle does not come, never give up hope that God’s time to work a miracle in your life may come soon.

While Christ sets His followers free from the system of religion that depends only on obedience to certain rules (with no response from the heart), Christians are still accountable to follow Christ’s commands and the moral standards and principles of God’s laws (Romans 8:4). This means that individual Christians must never use their freedom to satisfy sinful desires or practice questionable behaviors. In addition, they must not be selfishly proud about their freedom so that they find excuse to offend other sincere believers or mislead those who may be looking to them for a godly example (Romans 6:17; 13:10; 14:17; 1 Corinthians 8 – 9).

Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?

KEPT YOU FROM OBEYING THE TRUTH / GALATIANS 5:7

False teaching in the church usually takes one of two forms. Either it denies the foundational truths of the Christian faith (Galatians 1:9), or it claims that something in addition to what is found in the New Testament is required for a believer to be a complete Christian (Galatians 1:6-7; Galatians 2:15-16; Galatians 5:2; Galatians 5:6).

  1. All Christian teaching must be evaluated by how it measures up to and conforms to the original message of Christ and the apostles (Acts 14:4) as found in the New Testament (Galatians 1:11-12; 2:1-2, 7-9; Ephesians 2:20). We must ask: Does a teaching contain less than the Biblical message (is something missing)? Does it claim to support Biblical truth, yet add something unbiblical to the original message?
  2. We must never evaluate or accept teaching based only on feelings, experience, results, miracles or by what other people are saying. The New Testament is the highest standard for truth.
  3. We must beware of any teaching that says God’s Word as revealed in the Bible is no longer sufficient and that the church needs additional revelation based on modern scholarship, science, philosophy, psychology or new spiritual insight in order to reach its full potential. Only Biblical truth can bring true salvation and spiritual maturity.

FAITH EXPRESSING ITSELF THROUGH LOVE / GALATIANS 5:6

(KJV) Galatians 5:6

For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.

FAITH EXPRESSING ITSELF THROUGH LOVE / GALATIANS 5:6

The Bible declares that a person is saved through faith (Galatians 2:15-16; Romans 3:22; Ephesians 2:8-9). 

  1. In this passage, Paul defines the exact nature of that faith. Saving faith is a living faith in a living Savior. It is not just an intellectual belief, but an active trust that surrenders control of one’s life to Christ’s leadership and continues to follow Him in obedience. It is so alive that it cannot avoid expressing itself in love-motivated actions. 
  2. Faith that does not truly love and obey Christ (1 John 2:3; 1 John 5:3), show a real concern for the work of God’s kingdom (Matthew 12:28) and actively resist sin and worldly influence (Galatians 5:16-17) is not saving faith (James 2:14-16).

FALLEN AWAY FROM GRACE / GALATIANS 5:4

 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

FALLEN AWAY FROM GRACE / GALATIANS 5:4

Some Galatians had shifted the focus of their faith from Christ to legalistic standards and rule keeping based loosely on God’s law and other traditions (Galatians 1:6-7; Galatians 5:3). For this reason, they “have been alienated from Christ” and “have fallen away from grace.” This means that they have cut themselves off from a personal relationship with Jesus (John 15:4-6) and abandoned the principle of God’s grace (His unearned favor and love), which is the only thing that can bring true life and spiritual salvation (2 Peter 2:15, 20-22). For Christians, following the moral standards and principles of God’s laws and commands should be something they do out of love and gratitude to Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. What makes keeping the law useless and wrong, however, is when people use it in an attempt to earn spiritual salvation or gain God’s favor. Only by faith in Christ can a person enter and maintain a right relationship with God (Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5).

I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.

SIGNS AND WONDERS / JOHN 4:48

Signs and wonders – amazing and miraculous acts that reveal Christ’s power and divinity (God-nature) – are a true work of God’s kingdom (His purposes and way of life on earth and into eternity). However, our faith must not be centered on the signs, but on Jesus Christ Himself, because the signs are meant to bring honor to Him (John 2:11). That means that the focus of our faith and devotion – and even our prayers – should not be on the miracles, but on the Miracle Worker (Jesus). We must believe in Jesus Christ because of who He is – God’s Son and our Savior. Jesus deserves worship and esteem because of His love, mercy, faithfulness and righteous character, not just because of what He can do for us in physical or material ways. Signs, wonders and miracles should strengthen and deepen our faith and devotion to the Lord, as this miracle did for the official (John 4:50-53).

And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.

CROP FOR ETERNAL LIFE / JOHN 4:36

Those who introduce others to Jesus and lead them to a point of accepting Christ and yielding their lives to Him are doing something of eternal significance. They will one day rejoice in heaven over those who were saved because of their prayers, their example and their witness. At the same time, they must remain humble and never lose sight of the fact that any “success” they see in this service for Jesus is the result of the sacrificial work of Christ and the prayers and ‘spiritual seed planting’ of others (John 4:38). In the same way, we will seldom see or experience the full results of our own spiritual labors because other faithful Christians will come behind us and reap a spiritual harvest where we have previously planted and invested in lives. But whether we plant the spiritual seeds of love and kindness that later cause someone to turn to God, or whether we pray with someone to actually receive Christ, we are all part of the same process. There should be no competition among God’s people. When individuals come to Jesus, it is a reason for all Christians to rejoice.

It was very uncommon for Jewish religious teachers to speak with women in public. The fact that she was a Samaritan may have added to the surprise expressed by the disciples (2 Kings 17:24; Luke 9:53).

These were Jesus’ last words before His death (Luke 23:46). Faithful followers of Christ have often used them in their dying moments (Acts 7:59). They express dependence on God and faith in His goodness to the very end (2 Samuel 24:14; Romans 8:28). Committing ourselves into God’s care is appropriate during any time of danger and difficulty.
