WE OUGHT TO LAY DOWN OUR LIVES / 1 JOHN 3:16

This does not necessarily mean a physical sacrifice of one’s life (although that may be required at times to save another person; John 15:13). Rather, it means that we should be willing to put aside our own rights, interests and concerns for the sake and benefit of others, particularly to show God’s love to others, particularly to show God’s love to them and bring them closer to Christ (Romans 12:10; 1 Corinthians 10:24; Philippians 2:3; Philippians 2:5; Philippians 2:17-18).

NO MURDERER HAS ETERNAL LIFE / 1 JOHN 3:15

Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

NO MURDERER HAS ETERNAL LIFE / 1 JOHN 3:15

All sin – great or small – is evidence of a corrupt human nature that, apart from God, would bring spiritual death and separation from God to all people. Yet, the Bible generally distinguishes between different kinds of sins, particularly as they relate to those who claim to know and follow Christ. These include unintentional sins (Leviticus 4:2, 3, 13, 22; 5:4-6; Numbers 15:31), less serious sins that do not lead to spiritual death (Matthew 5:19), and deliberate and intentional sins (1 John 5:16; 1 John 5:17), some of which lead to spiritual death (1 John 5:16). John emphasizes that there are certain sins that true born-again believers will not commit because of the eternal life of Christ at work within them (1 John 2:11, 15-16; 3:6-10, 14-15; 4:20; 5:2; 2 John 1:9). These sins, because of their seriousness and their origin in the very core of one’s spirit, indicate an intense rebellion against God. People who commit them prove that they are not in the right relationship with God or that they have separated themselves from life and spiritual salvation through Christ (Galatians 5:4). 

  1. Examples of sins that prove that a person is still enslaved to their own God-defying way or that they have abandoned a personal relationship with God include: apostasy (spiritual rebellion and refusal to have faith in God; (1 John 2:19; 1 John 4:6; Hebrews 10:26-31), murder (1 John 3:15; 2:11), sexual impurity or immorality (Romans 1:21-27; 1 Corinthians 5; Ephesians 5:5; Revelation 21:8), abandonment of one’ family (1 Timothy 5:8), leading others into sin (Matthew 18:6-10), cruelty (Matthew 24:48-51) and a practice of dishonesty and lying (Deuteronomy 25:16; Proverbs 6:17; John 8:44; Acts 5:3; 22:15). These detestable sins reveal defiance and dishonor toward God and a lack of godly care and respect for others (1 John 2:9-10; 3:6-10; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11; Galatians 5:19-21; 1 Thessalonians 4:5; 2 Timothy 3:1-5; Hebrews 3:7-19). For this reason, anyone who claims to be Jesus’ friend with the Holy Spirit living within him or her, yet willingly participates in the above-mentioned sins, is deceiving himself or herself and “is a liar, and the truth is not in him” (1 John 2:4; 1 John 1:6; 1 John 3:7-8).
  2. Believers must keep in mind, however, that all sin – even the less serious ones – if not repented of, can lead to a weakening of spiritual life, to a rejection of the Holy Spirit’s leading and finally to spiritual death and eternal separation from God (Romans 6:15-23; 8:5-13). Also, those who are guilty of serious sins that have cut them off from God can be restored to a relationship if they truly repent (admit their sin, turn from their own God-defying way, surrender to God and follow His purposes) and abandon their sin (1 John 1:9). This does not, however, guarantee freedom from the temporary, earthly consequences of the sin (2 Samuel 12:10-15).

CHILDREN OF GOD … CHILDREN OF THE DEVIL / 1 JOHN 3:10

In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

CHILDREN OF GOD … CHILDREN OF THE DEVIL / 1 JOHN 3:10

This is the heart and conclusion of John’s teaching in 1 John 2:28 – 3:10. He has warned these troubled believers not to be deceived about the nature of true salvation and a personal relationship with God (1 John 3:7). This means that true believers must reject any belief or teaching that claims that we can be out of fellowship with God (1 John 1:3), continue to sin, do the works of the devil (1 John 3:8), love the world (1 John 2:15), do harm to others (1 John 3:14-18) and yet be children of God who are spiritually saved and destined for heaven.

Contrary to this false teaching, John clearly states that anyone who continues to defy God and His standards (1 John 3:9) “is of the devil” (1 John 3:8) and “is not a child of God.” They are liars (1 John 2:4). True children of God are characterized by a love for God that is shown by following His commands (1 John 5:2) and showing true concern for the spiritual and physical needs of others (1 John 3:16-17).

HE CANNOT GO ON SINNING / 1 JOHN 3:9

Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

HE CANNOT GO ON SINNING / 1 JOHN 3:9

The verb “to sin” (Greek hamartano) is a present active infinitive, implying continued or present active infinitive, implying continued or persistent action. John emphasizes that those who truly are God’s children cannot make sin their way of life because God’s life cannot exist in those who make a practice or habit of sinning (1 John 1:5-7; 2:3-11, 15-17, 24-29; 3:6-24; 4:7-8, 20).

  1. Spiritual birth produces renewed spiritual life that results in a new and ongoing relationship with God. In this letter, every time John speaks of the new birth of the believer, he uses the Greek perfect tense to emphasize the continued and sustained relationship that started when a person first received Christ and entrusted his or her life to the Lord (1 John 2:39; 3:9; 4:7; 5:1, 4, 18).
  2. It is impossible for people who have God’s life in them (who are “born of God”) to continue in the habit of sinning; it is a spiritual contradiction. The Holy Spirit cannot remain in a life that is full of sin, and God cannot have a covenant relationship with any who continue to “walk in the darkness” (1 John 1:7). Believers may occasionally lapse from God’s holy standard, but they will not deliberately continue in sin as a lifestyle (1 John 3:6; 1 John 3:10).
  3. That which keeps Christ’s faithful followers from willfully and continually sinning is “God’s seed” in them (God’s very life, Spirit and nature living in them, 1 John 5:11-12; John 15:4; 2 Peter 1:4).
  4. By an active faith in God (1 John 5:4), the inner presence of Christ, the guiding power of the Holy Spirit and the written Word of God (1 Thessalonians 2:10), all Christians can live consistently free from the life-entangling power of sin.

LIVES IN HIM – SEEN HIM OR KNOWN HIM / 1 JOHN 3:6

Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

LIVES IN HIM – SEEN HIM OR KNOWN HIM / 1 JOHN 3:6

LIVES IN HIM

The words “lives in him” and “born of God” (1 John 3:9) are equivalent expressions. Only those who continue to live in a right relationship with God continue to be born of God (His children John 15:4; Romans 8:1).

SEEN HIM OR KNOWN HIM

The verbs “seen” and “known” are in the perfect tense (the Greek perfect tense refers to action that occurred in the past with results continuing to the present moment). John is saying that no one who is living in sin – deliberately defying God and His standards – has seen (and continues to see) God, nor has he known (and continues to know) Him. This can apply either to those who have never had real faith in Christ or to those who knew God in the past but have not continued knowing Him in the present.

CHILDREN OF GOD / 1 JOHN 3:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 3:1

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

CHILDREN OF GOD / 1 JOHN 3:1

The truth that God is our Father and we are His children is one of the greatest revelations in the New Testament.

  1. Being a child of God – chosen and adopted through Christ as His very own – is among the highest honors and privileges of our salvation (John 1:12; Galatians 4:7).
  2. Being a child of God is the basis for our faith and trust in God (Matthew 6:25-34) and our hope of glory for the future. As God’s children, we are heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, which means that we have part in His eternal inheritance (Romans 8:16-17; Galatians 4:7).
  3. God wants us to become increasingly aware that we are His children. This awareness comes through the presence of the Holy Spirit – the “Spirit of sonship” (Romans 8:15) – within us. The Spirit allows us to call to God in a deep, personal and intimate way – “Abba, Father” (Galatians 4:6) – and He gives us the desire to be “led by the Spirit” (Romans 8:14). 
  4. Being a child of God means that, at times, we will be disciplined by the Father (Hebrews 12:6-7, 11) so that we can grow in spiritual maturity (1 John 3:9; 4:17-19). God’s highest goal in making us His children is to save us forever (John 3:16) and to make us more like Jesus (Romans 8:29).

This verse suggests the certainty of judgment on those who are spiritually dead (Matthew 24:28; Revelation 19:17-18). Just as surely as vultures are drawn to a corpse, so judgment will come on the wicked when Christ returns.

Remember Lot’s wife.

REMEMBER LOT’S WIFE! / LUKE 17:32

The tragic error of Lot’s wife (Genesis 19:26) was to place her interests and affections on an earthly society rather than on a heavenly one (Hebrews 11:10). She turned back because her heart (her affection and desires) still wanted to be in Sodom (Genesis 19:17: Genesis 19:26). Every believer should ask: Is my attention more focused on temporary things or eternal things? Is my heart more attached to earthly things than to Jesus and the hope of His return?

THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS WITHIN YOU / LUKE 17:20-21

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 17:20-21

And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: 21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS WITHIN YOU / LUKE 17:20-21

According to Jesus, the present nature of God’s kingdom is spiritual, not material or political. Many people miss God’s purposes for their lives because they are not willing to let Him change them from the inside out. The fact that the “kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation” (Luke 17:20) means that it does not come as an earthly political power, and we cannot gain a place in it by our own good efforts. Becoming part of God’ s kingdom requires a completely changed heart and mind that only God can produce as we yield our lives to Him. As God’s kingdom purposes begin to develop within a person, he or she will begin to develop a Christlike character, including “righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17). Through the power of the Spirit, we show the power of God’s kingdom by conquering the forces of sin, sickness and Satan, not by conquering kings and nations. When Jesus comes to earth the second time, then God’s glory (Luke 17:24; Matthew 24:30) as it triumphs over kings and nation and all evil (Revelation 11:15; Revelation 11:16-18; Revelation 19:11-21).
