FUTILITY … HARDENING … LUST FOR MORE / EPHESIANS 4:17-19

(KJV) Ephesians 4:17-19

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, 18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: 19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

FUTILITY … HARDENING … LUST FOR MORE / EPHESIANS 4:17-19

Life without God eventually leads to frustration and useless efforts (Ecclesiastes 1 :2; Romans 1:21). When people’s minds and lives are not open to God and His truth, they get caught up in their own ways, becoming increasingly hardened and unresponsive to God. The time can come when they lose all sensitivity to God and become lost in their ways of defiance against Got (Romans 1:25).

TRUTH IN LOVE / EPHESIANS 4:15

(KJV) Ephesians 4:15

But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

TRUTH IN LOVE / EPHESIANS 4:15

Maintaining unity in Christian faith (Ephesians 4:13) must be based on an active love that seeks what is best for others. It requires the constant attempt to resolve problems and to settle differences in a way that shows mutual loyalty and obedience to Christ and His Word. This means that speaking the truth of God’s Word with an attitude of love and humility must take priority over loyalty to Christian institutions, traditions, individual people or the local church. Any attempt to maintain friendship or unity must never cause us to contradict the principles of God’s Word or to compromise our commitment to Biblical truth (Ephesians 4:14). At times, faithfulness to God’s Word may involve separation from a local church that has become unfaithful to Christ and New Testament teaching (Ephesians 2:20). In this case, the Holy Spirit eventually will raise within the community another church that is loyal to Christ and the original New Testament truth.

NO LONGER BE INFANTS / EPHESIANS 4:14

(KJV) Ephesians 4:14

That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

NO LONGER BE INFANTS / EPHESIANS 4:14

In Ephesians 4:13-15, Paul describes spiritually “mature” persons who have the fullness of Christ.

  1. Spiritually immature people are unstable in commitment, easily deceived by the false teaching and influence of dynamic personalities and presentations. Such people will remain like infants spiritually if their understanding of and commitment to Biblical truth remains so shallow (Ephesians 4:14-15) or if they fail to learn God’s Word, apply the Word and grow in their devotion and service to God (Hebrews 5:14; 6:1; James 1:4).
  2. Spiritually mature Christians respond strongly with eager hearts to God’s Word and godly ministry (Ephesians 4:11). They take an active role in building up the church and promoting unity in love and purpose (Ephesians 4:16) through their works of service (Ephesians 4:12). They do not sit back and expect others to serve them, but they purposefully seek out ways to serve and build up others. Spiritually mature individuals also do their part to spread and communicate Christ’s message, in and out of church, by “speaking the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15). They understand that the true message of Christ as presented in the New Testament is to be held in love, presented in love and defended in a spirit of love. The love is first directed to “Christ” (Ephesians 4:15), and then to the church (Ephesians 4:16) and to one another (Ephesians 4:32; 1 Corinthians 16:14).

Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

UNITY IN THE FAITH / EPHESIANS 4:13

In Ephesians 4, Paul teaches that the “unity of the Spirit” (Ephesians 4:3) and the “unity in the faith” are experienced, maintained and perfected by:

  1. Believers accepting and responding to the New Testament faith and message of God-appointed apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers (Ephesians 4:11-12).
  2. Believers accepting all of the spiritual resources Christ has made available (Ephesians 4:13; Ephesians 3:19) to help His followers grow in discipline, character and maturity in all aspects of relationship and service with Christ (Ephesians 4:15).
  3. No longer being immature people who accept “every wind of teaching” but those who have a knowledge of the truth by which to recognize and reject false teachers (Ephesians 4:14-15).
  4. Holding on to and speaking the revealed truth of God’s Word in an attitude of love (Ephesians 4:15).
  5. Living in “true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:24; 4:17-32). As individual Christians within a church congregation accept and follow these disciplines, they will grow in their relationship with Christ and each other. As a result, the church as a whole will be built up spiritually and experience growth on many levels (Ephesians 4:16).

TO PREPARE GOD’S PEOPLE FOR WORKS OF SERVICE / EPHESIANS 4:11-12

Ephesians 4:11-12

And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

TO PREPARE GOD’S PEOPLE FOR WORKS OF SERVICE / EPHESIANS 4:11-12

This passage states one of the primary purposes for which Christ gives gifted leaders to the church. Those who have the ministry gifts mentioned in Ephesians 4:11 are not to do all the work of ministry for the people. Their primary role is to train and equip members of the church congregation to do ministry themselves, both inside and outside of the church. This ministry principle is a challenge to leaders in that they must release people into various roles of service. It is a challenge to people in the church in that they are to do more than simply sit back and receive ministry. They must seek an active role of service in the church, using their God-given abilities to help others and to build up the church.

ONE LORD / EPHESIANS 4:4-6

(KJV) Ephesians 4:4-6

There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

ONE LORD / EPHESIANS 4:4-6

Essential to Christian faith and unity is the confession that there is only “one Lord.” 

  1. The fact that there is only “one Lord” means that Jesus Christ’s work of redemption (spiritual salvation, liberation from sin, restoration of our relationship with God) is perfect and sufficient. No other Savior or mediator is needed to bring us to God. Only Jesus provides the opportunity for spiritual salvation (1 Timothy 2:5-6; Hebrews 9:15). Only through Christ can we come near to God (Hebrews 7:25).
  2. To give equal or greater loyalty to any authority (secular or religious) other than God – as revealed in Christ and His inspired Word – is the same as rejecting Christ as Lord and cutting off the life that is in Him alone. In order to truly follow Christ and experience the “unity of the Spirit” (Ephesians 4:3), a person must submit to the Lord Jesus Christ as the supreme Leader in his or her life and follow Christ’s authority as communicated in God’s written Word.

KEEP THE UNITY / EPHESIANS 4:3

Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

KEEP THE UNITY / EPHESIANS 4:3

“The unity of the Spirit” cannot be created by any human being or group of believers. As Paul has already emphasized in Ephesians 1 – 3, this unity already exists for those who have accepted the truth and received Christ. The Ephesians are now to maintain that unity, not through human efforts or organizations, but by living “a life worthy of the calling they have received” (Ephesians 4:1). Spiritual unity is not a matter of intellectual agreement on all issues. It is a unity of love and purpose (Ephesians 4:17-18) and is maintained by being loyal to the truth and moving in obedience to the leading of the Spirit (Ephesians 4:1-3, 14-15; Galatians 5:22-26). This unity is based on Christ’s love and purpose at work in and through our lives. It cannot be achieved “by human effort” (Galatians 3:3). It will, however, express itself outwardly in good works (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 6:10; Titus 2:14; 1 John 3:17-18; Psalms 133:1-3; John 17:21).

EVERYONE DESERTED HIM / MARK 14:50

We should not compare the failure of Peter and the other disciples at the time of Jesus’ arrest to the spiritual and moral failure of pastors or leaders after Christ’s death and resurrection. There are several reasons why we cannot compare the two situations equally”

  1. At the time of their failure, Peter and the disciples were not yet under the new covenant (God’s plan of spiritual salvation and a renewed relationship with people through the life and sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ; Mark 14:24). The new covenant did not go into effect until Christ died on the cross (Hebrews 9:15-20).
  2. Peter and the disciples had not yet experienced being “born again” spiritually (John 3:3-7), which includes being spiritually renewed and transformed by God’s Holy Spirit. The Spirit was not yet given to empower, guide and live within them until the day of Christ’s resurrection when He “breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’ “ (John 20:22). The disciples’ failure was an act of weakness rather than wickedness. 
  3. When Peter and the disciples abandoned Christ, they did not have the advantage of those who are now aware of the moral implications of Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross (Romans 6). In addition, they did not have the spiritual power provided by Christ’s sacrifice or faith inspired by His resurrection from the dead.

And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?

KEEP WATCH FOR ONE HOUR / MARK 14:37

Peter and the disciples neglected to stay alert and pray, even though prayer was the only thing that could have kept them from failing during the difficult time ahead (Mark 14:50). Instead, they were spiritually weak and ended up scattering after Jesus was arrested (Mark 14:50-52). Peter even denied knowing Jesus (Mark 14:66-72). Failure in our Christian life is absolutely certain without prayer (Acts 10:9).

Jesus’ action is an example of what His followers ought to do in times of great distress or grief.

  1. Turn to God in prayer (Mark 14:32, 35-36, 39).
  2. Seek the support of friends (Mark 14:33-34, 42).
  3. Acknowledge God as a loving Father who will always take care of us and do what is best (Mark 14:36).
  4. Trust God and commit to His plans and purposes (Mark 14:36). [See Matthew 26:37 on the ten stages of the suffering of Christ.]
