SING … TO THE LORD / EPHESIANS 5:19

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Ephesians 5:19

Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

SING … TO THE LORD / EPHESIANS 5:19

Spirit-filled people (Ephesians 5:18) are encouraged to engage in three types of singing:

  1. “Psalms” refer to the Old Testament psalms, which would have been much like the primary songbook for God’s people well into the early church period. This could represent singing God’s Word in general.
  2. “Hymns” were early Christian confessions of faith in God and the message of Christ, which were sung as a church body. In general, a hymn is a song of praise to God that focuses on His acts of character traits.
  3. “Spiritual songs” can be any songs that honor God and uplift the worshiper, including spontaneous words of praise, such as a prophetic song (1 Samuel 2:1-10; Luke 1:46-55, 67-69).

Singing is a language of the heart and a way of expressing inner joy, praise, worship, love, longing and thanksgiving to God. Singing can be an expression of the Holy Spirit within us (Ephesians 5:18; 1 Corinthians 14:14). All types of Christian singing – both in the church and in private – should be primarily directed to God as prayers of praise, worship or sincere request (Psalms 40:3; 77:6). Singing can be a means of encouragement, building others up, teaching, giving thanks and praying (Colossians 3:16). The purpose of singing God’s Word, hymns or spiritual songs is not entertainment, personal pleasure or to display one’s spirituality; it is to honor, praise and worship God (Romans 15:9-11; Revelation 5:9-10).

FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT / EPHESIANS 5:18

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Ephesians 5:18

And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT / EPHESIANS 5:18

The Greek phrase translated “be filled” (present sense, passive voice, imperative mood) does not refer to the filling of the Spirit as a one-time, once-for-all experience, but rather an ongoing way of life involving “repeatedly being filled.” Christ’s followers must experience constant spiritual refreshing and renewal (Ephesians 3:14-19; 4:22-24; Romans 12:2) by continually being filled with the Holy Spirit.

  1. Christians are to be baptized in the Holy Spirit after their conversion to faith in Christ (Acts 1:5; 2:4), yet they are to be filled with the Spirit repeatedly for worship, service and witness (Acts 4:31-33; 6:3).
  2. Christians experience repeated, or continual, fillings with the Spirit by maintaining an active and growing faith in Jesus Christ (Galatians 3:5), being filled with God’s Word (Colossians 3:16), praying, giving thanks and singing to the Lord (Ephesians 5:19-20; 1 Corinthians 14:15), serving others (Ephesians 5:21) and doing what the Holy Spirit desires (Ephesians 4:30; Romans 8:1-14; Galatians 5:16; 1 Thessalonians 5:19).
  3. Although Paul contrasts being filled with wine with being filled with the Spirit, the point is that both fillings influence thinking and behavior but with very different outcomes. Christians must live under the constant control and influence of the Holy Spirit who can transform their minds, direct their lives and develop their character (Galatians 5:16-26).
  4. Several results of being filled with the Spirit are as follows: (a) praising, speaking and singing with joy to God (Ephesians 5:19), (b) giving thanks (Ephesians 5:20 and (c) submitting to one another in order to honor Christ (Ephesians 5:21).

DEEDS OF DARKNESS / EPHESIANS 5:11

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Ephesians 5:11

And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

DEEDS OF DARKNESS / EPHESIANS 5:11

Those who are loyal to Christ cannot be neutral or silent when they see “deeds of darkness” and immoral behavior (Ephesians 5:3-6). They must be prepared to challenge, expose, correct and speak against wickedness in all forms, while being careful that they are not secretly caught up in some of the same issues (Romans 2:1, 3). To speak out humbly and sincerely against ungodliness is to hate sin (Hebrews 1:9), to stand with God against evil (Psalms 94:16) and to remain faithful to Christ, who also exposed evil behavior (John 7:7; 15:18-20; Luke 22:28).

NOT EVEN A HINT … THESE THINGS AR IMPROPER / EPHESIANS 5:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Ephesians 5:3

But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;

NOT EVEN A HINT … THESE THINGS AR IMPROPER / EPHESIANS 5:3

In this sinful, rebellious world, there are many activities, behaviors and practices that are common for many people but completely unacceptable and “improper for God’s holy people.” This applies to our own actions and conversations as well as the behaviors of those with whom we associate (Ephesians 5:7). It includes what we willingly take into our minds through various forms of audio and visual media. We are to keep ourselves from “obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking” (Ephesians 5:4) – even when they are acceptable within our culture or popular entertainment. We cannot completely escape such things in all of our associations or in society as a whole, but we must not deliberately expose ourselves to, or take part in, supporting or approving of such things. We must take this Biblical instruction seriously, as the context surrounding this teaching gives a warning not to grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30) and a warning regarding God’s judgment and losing part in His kingdom (Ephesians 5:5-7).

‘THE OLD IS BETTER’ / LUKE 5:39

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 5:39

No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.

‘THE OLD IS BETTER’ / LUKE 5:39

The word translated “better” (Greek chrestos) may be more literally translated “suitable,” with the meaning that it is “good enough.” The point is that when people become comfortable with what they have, they do not desire something better. Many of the Jews and their leaders rejected the “new wine” of Christ’s message because they felt that the ‘old wine” (the traditions of first-century Judaism) was good enough. Jesus uses the wine metaphor, or symbolic comparison, by suggesting that those who are accustomed to drinking fermented wine acquire a desire for it and do not want unfermented wine. He recognizes the habit-forming, addictive effect of alcoholic beverages. It is not Jesus, but rather the one drinking the “old wine,” who thinks “the old is better.” But literal wine is not the issue here. Jesus was describing the resistance of some people to change their religious traditions and accept the way God and His Son, Christ Jesus, desires for us to live.

  1. We must not interpret this verse to mean that the “old wine” (man-made religious beliefs and traditions) is better than the “new wine” (the message of forgiveness and new life through faith in Christ). This is the opposite of what the parable teaches. Jesus is saying that the Pharisees have settled for less than God’s desire for them. By doing so, the Pharisees and their followers will not even recognize the truth and benefits of the new way because they feel that “the old” is good enough. Only the “new wine” (the life-giving message of Christ) would bring the salvation that all of humankind needs.
  2. The Pharisees completely overlooked the true purpose of God’s law and how it is fulfilled through Christ and His message. They were refusing to accept the fresh revelation of God and insisted upon holding on to traditions’ altered (fermented, like the old wine) messages. Yet those who receive Jesus and His fresh, new message find that it is better than their old sinful way of life.

EAT AND DRINK WITH … ‘SINNERS’ / LUKE 5:30

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 5:30

But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?

EAT AND DRINK WITH … ‘SINNERS’ / LUKE 5:30

When Jesus used the “doctor” analogy (Luke 5:31), He was not suggesting that the Pharisees were “the healthy.” He was saying that people must recognize that they are sinners (spiritually sick) and separated from God before they can be spiritually healed. (Matthew 9:11).

SON OF MAN / LUKE 5:24

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 5:24

But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.

SON OF MAN / LUKE 5:24

The “Son of Man” was the expression Jesus most often used to refer to Himself. It is likely He had adopted the expression from Daniel (Daniel 7:13). Daniel used the title to describe a person he saw in a vision, one “like a son of man” coming with the clouds of heaven, who is given an everlasting kingdom (Daniel 7:13). In using this expression, Jesus is saying that He is the predicted Messiah (Christ, Savior) sent by God. The phrase emphasizes Jesus’ humanity – the fact that God came to us through Christ – and His ability to relate to, help and save us. Jesus uses the title

  1. As a substitute for “I” (Matthew 11:19)
  2. When making important claims (Matthew 20:28; Mark 10:45)
  3. When predicting His death on the cross (Mark 9:44; 8:31; Matthew 17:22)
  4. When speaking about His resurrection (Matthew 17:9)
  5. When referring to His glorious return to earth (Matthew 24:27; Mark 13:26; 14:62)
  6. When speaking of His role in judgment (Matthew 13:41)

JESUS KNEW WHAT THEY WERE THINKING / LUKE 5:22

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(LKV) Luke 5:22

But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts?

JESUS KNEW WHAT THEY WERE THINKING / LUKE 5:22

We must remember that God knows our thoughts, desires and imaginations (Psalms 139; Matthew 17:25; John 1:48; 2:25; 21:17; Hebrews 4:13). In fact, when it comes to sinful thoughts, Jesus says that continuing to imagine ungodly things is the same as actually committing the sins (Matthew 5:27-28). The answer to this weakness is to become disciplined in our thinking by relying on God to renew our minds (Romans 12:2; 2 Corinthians 10:5; Philippians 4:8).

CARRYING A PARALYTIC / LUKE 5:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 5:18

And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.

CARRYING A PARALYTIC / LUKE 5:8

The friends of the paralyzed man had strong faith that Jesus could heal him, as seen by their determination to bring him to Jesus. We too must show the confidence that Christ can meet the needs of those we know by using every opportunity to introduce them to Jesus. If we truly desire to bring others to Christ, God’s Spirit will provide many opportunities to do so. Notice that it was the faith and determination of the friends that led to the man’s spiritual salvation and physical healing.

PRAYERS OF JESUS / LUKE 5:16

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 5:16

And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.

PRAYERS OF JESUS / LUKE 5:16

  1. Luke focuses on the importance of prayer and its power in the life of Jesus more than the other Gospel writers. There is no doubt that Jesus’ time and interaction with His Father was the source of His supernatural guidance and power. When the Holy spirit descended upon Jesus during His baptism in the Jordan River, He was “praying” (Luke 3:21) at times He got away from the multitudes “and prayed” (Luke 5:16), and He “spent the night praying” before choosing the twelve disciples (Luke 6:12). He was “praying in private” before He asked His disciples an important question (Luke 9:18). Prior to His supernatural experience (His “transfiguration”) with Moses and Elijah, He had climbed the mountain “to pray” (Luke 9:28; the actual transfiguration occurred while “He was praying” (Luke 9:29). He also “was praying “when the disciples approached Him about learning how to pray (the Lord’s Prayer, Luke 11:1). In Gethsemane, He “prayed more earnestly” shortly before His arrest (Luke 22:44). As He died on the cross, He prayed for others (Luke 23:34); and the last words He spoke before His death were a prayer (Luke 23:46). Luke also records that Jesus prayed after His resurrection (Luke 24:30).
  2. In examining the life of Jesus in the other Gospels (Matthew, Mark, John), we find that He prayed before extending the invitation, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened” (Matthew 11:25-28). He also prayed before raising Lazarus from the dead (John 11:41-42) and during His last supper with His disciples as He instituted the Lord’s Supper, communion (John 17; Matthew 14:23).

The Bible shows that Jesus prayed constantly. If Jesus, who was Himself God, relied this heavily on prayer with His Father, how much more do we need to follow His example if we expect to receive wisdom, direction and power to overcome evil and accomplish God’s purpose for our lives.
