ONCE MORE SHAKE THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH / HAGGAI 2:6-9

(KJV) Haggai 2:6-9

For thus saith the Lord of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; 7 And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the Lord of hosts. 8 The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the Lord of hosts. 9 The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the Lord of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the Lord of hosts.

ONCE MORE SHAKE THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH / HAGGAI 2:6-9

These verses refer to God’s future judgment on the world preceding and accompanying Christ’s return to earth (Hebrews 12:26-27): “The earth and the sky will tremble” (Joel 3:16; Matthew 24:29-30). Following this time, Christ will establish a kingdom of peace on earth, and God’s glory will fill the temple more than ever before as Christ literally reigns among His people.

THIS HOUSE IN ITS FORMER GLORY / HAGGAI 2:3

(KJV Haggai 2:3

Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing?

THIS HOUSE IN ITS FORMER GLORY / HAGGAI 2:3

When the new temple was completed, some people were discouraged and disheartened because they remembered the splendor of the temple that had been destroyed over 70 years earlier. Many of these older Jews viewed the present temple as “nothing” compared to the magnificence of the first temple built by Solomon. But God encouraged the people with three promises:

  1. God Himself would be with them to fulfill all the promises made to their faithful ancestors (Haggai 2:4).
  2. God’s Spirit would remain among the people (Haggai 2:5).

The glory of God’s house in the future would be greater than anything in the past. That was because of the powerful things that eventually would take place in that temple (Haggai 2:9), including the ministry of Jesus and His followers as recorder in the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) and the book of Acts. Christ Himself eventually would enter that temple when He was on earth, bringing God’s presence there in a more powerful and literal way than ever before.

As he had done when he went down to Egypt, Abraham failed to trust God with his wife’s situation, risking God’s plan for her. But God touched the hearts of men in order to protect Sarah’s purpose as the mother of the covenant people (Genesis 20:3-7). At times, God will give His grace to help His normally faithful followers escape situations that can occur when they temporarily lack faith and obedience.

Then spake Haggai the Lord’s messenger in the Lord’s message unto the people, saying, I am with you, saith the Lord.

God responded to the people’s obedience by promising to be with them. He strengthened their determination and helped them accomplish the work (Zechariah 4:6). We can be assured that if we obey God’s Word and direction, He will enable us to do whatever He intends for us to do, regardless of our own understanding and abilities. To be “with you” is the greatest commitment the Lord can make to any believer (Genesis 26:24; 28:15; 39:2-3, 21, 23; Exodus 3:12; Matthew 28:20).

THE PEOPLE OBEYED / HAGGAI 1:12

Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the Lord their God had sent him, and the people did fear before the Lord.

THE PEOPLE OBEYED / HAGGAI 1:12

The leaders and the people responded to Haggai’s message with a great sense of awe and reverence for God. Their actions reflected how seriously they took Haggai’s message: immediately they committed themselves to restarting work on God’s house (Luke 11:28; John 14:15, 23).

Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes. 7 Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Consider your ways. 8 Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the Lord. 9 Ye looked for much, and, lo it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the Lord of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house. 10 Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit. 11 And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour of the hands.

Though the people may have been working hard, they were not enjoying the success they could have had. They had lost God’s blessing because their lives were self-centered; they showed little interest in God’s goals and purposes. We cannot expect to experience God’s blessing and help in our lives if we are not concerned for and active in His work. This includes participating in and contributing toward ministry efforts at home and abroad.

Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste?

PANELED HOUSES / HAGGAI 1:4

One of the main reasons the returned Jews had neglected the temple construction was because they had become so busy with their own interests. They had given great attention to the details of beautifying their own homes, using lovely panels of cedar wood, but they had left God’s house in ruins. Haggai insisted that God and His work had to come first. This is a timeless message to God’s people today as well. We must be careful not to let our own interests and concerns get in the way of our relationship with God and His work. His purposes must be the first and the highest priority in our lives (Matthew 6:33). Notice how passionate Jesus was for God’s house and work (John 2:17; 4:34; 6:38; 9:4). Our priorities in life – the things we give our time and attention to – are a good sign of where our hearts are and how much we really love God.

THE WORD OF THE LORD CAME / HAGGAI 1:1

(KJV) Haggai 1:1 In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of the Lord by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying,

THE WORD OF THE LORD CAME / HAGGAI 1:1

King Cyrus of Persia permitted 50,000 exiled Jews to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the city and its temple. (The Jews had been conquered and deported by the Babylonians over a half century earlier.) The former captives returned under the leadership of Zerubbabel as governor and Joshua as the high priest (Ezekiel 1:2-4; 2:64-65; 3:2; 5:1). During the second year of the return (536/535 B.C.), the temple foundation was laid (Ezekiel 3:8-10). However, opposition from neighboring peoples, including the Samaritans stopped the work on the temple (Ezekiel 4:1-5, 24). After a while, the Jewish people turned their focus completely away from spiritual goals and toward their own personal desires and needs. The temple project was neglected for 16 years. Therefore, God sent the prophets Haggai and Zechariah to encourage His people to restart the work on the temple.

THEY GOT THEIR FATHER TO DRINK WINE / GENESIS 19:33

(KJV) Genesis 19:33

And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

THEY GOT THEIR FATHER TO DRINK WINE / GENESIS 19:33

Lot’s daughters were guilty of the sin of incest (sexual relations with family members), and Lot was guilty of the sin of drunkenness. 

  1. Extended exposure to the ungodliness of the sodomites had seriously lowered the moral standards of Lot’s children, and Lot had tolerated it (Genesis 19:14). Lot’s reckless tolerance for ungodly behavior caused him to lose his family. Even his descendants became pagans (people groups who do not follow God or who follow false gods). 
  2. Lot is an example of a believing father whose faith and commitment may have been just enough to save himself, but not enough to influence or save his family. He learned too late that true faith involves teaching one’s family to avoid and resist the world’s evil influences (1 John 2:15, 17; 2 Corinthians 6:14).

SMOKE FROM A FURNACE / GENESIS 19:28

Peter, one of Jesus’s disciples and a pioneer leader in the church at Jerusalem, states that the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is an example of what is going to happen to all who defy God (2 Peter 2:6, 9). The New Testament warns that the final day of God’s wrath is approaching.
