(KJV) Genesis 22:2

And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

TAKE YOUR SON / GENESIS 22:2

God commanded Abrahm to sacrifice his son, Isaac. 

  1. Abraham’s situation shows two ways that God deals with his followers. (a) He will test to see if anything or anyone has captured our highest love. Was Abraham’s love for Isaac greater than his love for God? (b) He will test whether our hope is in the  God of the covenant or in the temporary blessings that come from the covenant. Had Abraham’s hope in God and trust in His promise shifted to hope in something else, even to Isaac himself? 
  2. Through this test, God forced Abrahm to face these questions and judge his own heart to see if he completely trusted and honored God (Genesis 22:12). 
  3. God did not really desire Isaac’s physical death (Genesis 22:12-13), but He did want to test Abraham’s commitment. God later condemned human sacrifice as a terrible sin (Leviticus 20:1-5).

GOD TESTED ABRAHAM / GENESIS 22:1

(KJV) Genesis 22:1

And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.

GOD TESTED ABRAHAM / GENESIS 22:1

Abraham’s faith and commitment to God were tested to the maximum when God commanded him to do something completely contrary to common sense and to his fatherly love. It went against what Abraham knew about God, including the promise that God had made about Isaac. In Abrahm’s story, we read about three extreme tests of faith: 

  1. God told Abraham to leave his people and country (Genesis 12:1) without knowing where he was going (Hebrews 11:8).
  2. God required Abraham to trust the covenant promise even though he did not see it fulfilled for twenty-five years (Genesis 12:1-2; Genesis 12:3; Genesis 15:6; Genesis 15: 8; Genesis 18:9-14; Hebrews 11:8-13).
  3. God commanded that Abraham offer Isaac, the promised son, on an altar of sacrifice to the Lord (Genesis 22). Like Abraham, all true believers in God will face difficult situations that test their faith.

TO WAIT FOR HIS SON FROM HEAVEN / 1 Thessalonians 1:10

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 1:10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

TO WAIT FOR HIS SON FROM HEAVEN / 1 Thessalonians 1:10

The great hope of the Thessalonian Christians was Jesus’ return to rescue them from “the wrath to come” – God’s judgment on the earth and punishment on those who do not accept Him.

  1. A true spiritual conversion to a life of faith in Christ involves (a) turning from sin, which is our own God-defying ways, and (b) turning to God in complete surrender, with the anticipation of Christ’s return for those who remain faithful to Him (1 Thessalonians 1:9). Waiting for Christ implies an ongoing expectation of His coming and a readiness for that time. 
  2. “The wrath to com” refers to the future judgment on the earth that occurs during the tribulation period. However, followers of Christ need not fear, for God is sending Jesus back to spare us from that time of wrath (God’s justified anger and punishment for defying Him). Clearly, Christ’s return for His faithful people preceded this coming wrath (Revelation 3:10).
  3. This is the first reference in 1 Thessalonians to Christ’s return, when He comes to take His faithful followers from the earth to be with Him in heaven (John 14:3; the other passages are 1 Thessalonians 2:19; 3:13; 4:17; 5:1-11, 23).

WITH POWER AND IN THE HOLY SPIRIT / 1 THESSALONIANS 1:5

(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 1:15

For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.

WITH POWER AND IN THE HOLY SPIRIT / 1 THESSALONIANS 1:5

The preaching of the apostles – those whom Christ commissioned to deliver His original message and establish His church – consisted of four essential elements:

  1. They proclaimed the gospel of God (1 Thessalonians 2:8) and Christ (1 Thessalonians 3:2) to others (Mark 14:9).
  2. They preached God’s Word in the power of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:11; Acts 1:5-8; Acts 2:4). This power exposed people’s sin and convinced them of their need for God’s forgiveness and new life. Those who accepted the message of Christ were rescued and liberated from the power of sin and Satan. The power of Christ’s message also resulted in the performing of miracles and healings (Acts 4:30; 1 Corinthians 2:4).
  3. The message was proclaimed “with full conviction.” This means that because of their faith in Christ and through the work of the Spirit in them, Jesus’ messengers were soberly aware and fully confident of the truth, purity and power of the message (Romans 1:16).
  4. Those who believed the message demonstrated their faith by obeying God’s Word and putting it into practice in their daily lives. They became examples of holiness (moral purity, spiritual integrity and wholeness, separation from evil and devotion to God) and righteousness (a right relationship with God and the power of God’s Spirit to live right by God’s standard).

These four elements must accompany the preaching and teaching of the message of Christ in order for people in our churches to experience complete spiritual salvation and freedom from the control of sin.

GOD HAS HEARD / GENESIS 21:17

And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is.

GOD HAS HEARD / GENESIS 21:17

God knew it was best for Hagar and Ishmael to leave. Yet, God continued to be with and care for them (Genesis 21:17-21). Ishmael received a promise from God that was similar to that given to Isaac. God’s plan was to “make him into a great nation” (Genesis 21:18).

HIS SON ISAAC WAS BORN / GENESIS 21:5

Isaac, the son of promise, was finally born to Abraham and Sarah. Through Isaac God would continue the covenant He made with Abraham (Genesis 21:12; 17:19). Twenty-five years passed before God’s promise of this child was fulfilled (Genesis 12:4). “The LORD is good to those whose hope is in Him” (Lamentations 3:25). In His own perfect time and way, God always fulfills His promises.

LIKE MY SIGNET RING / HAGGAI 2:23

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Haggai 2:23

In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith the Lord, and will make thee as a signet: for I have chosen thee, saith the Lord of hosts.

LIKE MY SIGNET RING / HAGGAI 2:23

When the time came for God to shake the heavens and the earth, He would make Zerubbabel kike a signet ring. Such a ring could be used to stamp an official seal – like a signature – or given as a pledge or guarantee of a promise. This “ring” signified the official mark of God’ supreme authority and a pledge of favor toward God’s people. In addition, it likely represented a guarantee of God’s promise to send a final ruler who would emerge victorious when God overturned thrones and shattered earthly kingdoms (Haggai 2:22). This was Haggai’s prophecy about Jesus Christ, a descendant of Zerubbabel (Matthew 1:12-13). “On that day,” Jesus will be the supreme ruler with absolute authority over everything. 

Zerubbabel’s importance in relation to Christ is further revealed in the two New Testament genealogies, or family histories, of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:12-13; Luke 3:27). Zerubbabel is the center that ties both branches of Jesus Christ’s “family tree” together: form Solomon (son of King David) to Zerubbabel to Joseph (Jesus’ earthly father), and from Nathan (son of King David) to Zerubbabel to Mary (Jesus’ mother).

Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth;

SHAKE THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH / HAGGAI 2:21

The prophet encouraged Zerubbabel, the governor of God’s people, by saying that one day God would destroy the power of ungodly kingdoms and nations throughout the earth. This will happen when Christ returns to earth to destroy the forces of evil and reign in peace over all the world (Revelation 19:11 – 20:6).

(KJV) Haggai 2:15-19  

And now, I pray you, consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the Lord: 16 Since those days were, when one came to an heap of twenty measures, there were but ten: when one came to the pressfat for to draw out fifty vessels out of the press, there were but twenty. 17 I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labours of your hands; yet ye turned not to me, saith the Lord.18 Consider now from this day and upward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of the Lord’s temple was laid, consider it. 19 Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree, hath not brought forth: from this day will I bless you.

GIVE CAREFUL THOUGHT / HAGGAI 2:15-19

God asked the people to think about why they had lost His blessing in the past. (They certainly should have remembered what had brought His judgment on them, resulting in their previous captivity and exile.) It was because of their disobedience and rebellion (Haggai 1:9-11; Haggai 1:6-11). Now, however, because of their willingness to build the temple, God would give them success in all other areas of life. This principle also is expressed in the New Testament: God’s favor and friendship will be a part of our lives only as we continue to pursue His purposes and obey His commands (John 14:21-23).

ASK THE PRIESTS / HAGGAI 2:10-14

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Haggai 2:10-14

In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the Lord by Haggai the prophet, saying, 11 Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying, 12 If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No. 13 Then said Haggai, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean. 14 Then answered Haggai, and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith the Lord; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.

ASK THE PRIESTS / HAGGAI 2:10-14

Using examples of things, the priests understood to be “clean” or “unclean” according to God’s ceremonial law (Leviticus 6:24-27), God illustrates that holiness (spiritual and moral purity and wholeness) cannot be transmitted by contact. However, the corrupting influence of sin could be “passed on” by contact or association. In other words, living in the ‘holy land” or simply following God’s regulations would not make them holy, but sin in their lives would defile and corrupt everything they did, including their worship. We must keep in mind that participating in religious activities – even spiritual worship – cannot make us right with God if our hearts are not in tune with His purposes. We also must be very sober about the fact that deliberately exposing ourselves to ungodly influences or holding on to sinful attitudes and behaviors will have a negative effect on our spiritual lives. Scripture clearly teaches that if we give bad influences our attention and our time, they will corrupt good character (Proverbs 22:24-25; 1 Corinthians 5:6; 15:33; 2 Peter 2:7-8).
