NOT A MATTER OF EATING OR DRINKING / ROMANS 14:17-18

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Romans 14:17-18

For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

18 For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men.

NOT A MATTER OF EATING OR DRINKING / ROMANS 14:17-18

Being overly concerned with trivial matters is to miss the primary purpose of God’s kingdom and the true meaning of Christian living. But notice that the issues addressed in this passage deal mainly with outward or physical issues such as eating or observing certain days. Often, such passages dealing with Christian freedom and liberty (1 Corinthians 8-10) are taken out of context to justify behavior that can bring harm to the mind and spirit. Food goes in and out of the body and has little, if anything, to do with spiritual matters. However, when people try to apply this principle of liberty and non-judgment to morally questionable activities and behaviors that actually do affect the mind and spirit, they are seriously missing the point (Colossians2:20, 23). For example, certain forms of entertainment are often presented as matters of personal choice and conscience and is some cases that may be true. But such activities do not necessarily fit into the same category as those described in these passages. Many types of entertainment contain sexually suggestive images, obscene language, and crude humor, which affect the mind and the spirit. God’s Word addresses these issues in an entirely different fashion than those things that go in and out of the body that do not affect the mind or spirit (Ephesians 5:3-7; Colossians 3:5). Exposing ourselves to these types of entertainment can be destructive spiritually because the images and language go into the mind, corrupt the spirit, and can affect behavior in a negative way. This behavior gives approval to ungodly conduct and can easily mislead others who look to us for an example of acceptable Christian conduct. Again, Paul’s strongest warning is to the person whose faith and conscience allow him or her to take greater liberty in their actions – “Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself be what he approves” (Romans 14:22; 1 Corinthians 8-10)

STOP PASSING JUDGMENT / ROMANS 14:13

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Romans 14:13

Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother’s way.

STOP PASSING JUDGMENT / ROMANS 14:13

Notice that from the start of this Romans 14 (and Romans 15) Paul addresses his remarks more to those whose faith allows them to take greater liberty on matters of choice. Such people are “not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother’s way.” They are to use their freedom in a way that will benefit others (1 Corinthians 10:23-33). Both those who take certain liberties and those who place certain restrictions on themselves should hold back from criticizing and judging each other. We must keep in mind that we will all give account to God for our own conduct (Romans 4:11-12). Though we must hold back from judging each other in trivial matters, Christians should consider how to encourage each other to be more like Christ in issues concerning faith, Biblical teaching and morals (Hebrews 10:24). This involves sincerely evaluating (1 Thessalonians 5:21; 1 John 4:1), correcting and rebuking one another in love and humility (Luke 17:3). When necessary, it means exercising church discipline toward serious moral and spiritual offenders (1 Corinthians 5:12-13; 2 Thessalonians 3:6, 14; 1 Timothy 5:20-21; 2 Timothy 2:24-26, 4:2).

CONSIDERS ONE DAY MORE SACRED THAN ANOTHER / ROMANS 14:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Romans 14:5

One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

CONSIDERS ONE DAY MORE SACRED THAN ANOTHER / ROMANS 14:5

This probably refers to the special festivals of the Old Testament ceremonial law. Some Christians apparently still regarded these days as particularly holy (reserved for God) and still having spiritual benefit. Others did not give special attention to these days, holding the view that all days present equally significant opportunities to honor and serve God. Note that in his answer, Paul does not attempt to deny God’s principle of setting aside one day in seven as a special day of rest and worship (Matthew 12:1). God Himself set aside this day (Genesis 2:2-3; Exodus 20:11; 31:17; Isaiah 58:13-14). In the New Testament, the first day of the week is recognized as having a special significance because of Jesus’ resurrection (Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2; Revelation 1:10).

EAT EVERYTHING … EATS ONLY VEGETABLES / ROMANS 14:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Romans 14:2

For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.

EAT EVERYTHING … EATS ONLY VEGETABLES / ROMANS 14:2

A number of believers in Rome were divided over a debatable issue: some were committed to eating only vegetables, while others were eating vegetables and all other foods, including meat. Paul states that eating in and of itself is not a moral matter, but that one’s personal attitude about what to eat could lead to unjustly criticizing one another. Throughout this section, “faith” is used in the sense of confidence or assurance. Whatever actions a Christian takes, he or she should be sure of doing what God considers best for them and in the best interests of others. (1 Corinthians 8).

But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons’ wives with thee.

I WILL ESTABLISH MY COVENANT WITH YOU / GENESIS 6:18

God promised to save Noah from the judgment that would come through the flood. Noah responded to God’s covenant by taking Him at His Word (Genesis 6:13; Hebrews 11:4-7). He showed his faith by responding in “holy fear” (Hebrews 11:4-7) and by building and entering the ark (Genesis 6:22; 7:7; 1 Peter 3:21).

AN ARK / GENESIS 6:14

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 6:14

Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

AN ARK / GENESIS 6:14

The Hebrew word for “ark” means a vessel for floating and occurs only here and in Exodus 2:3, 5 (where it is used to describe the basket in which baby Moses was place). The vessel resembled a barge, but not necessarily with square corners. It could carry a tremendous amount of cargo. Infact, it is calculated that the ark could hold about 7,000 kinds of animals. Hebrews 11:4-7 suggests that the ark is a type – a prophetic symbol – of Christ, the one who saves from judgment and death those who trust Him (1 Peter 3:20-21).

NOAH WAS A RIGHTEOUS MAN, BLAMELESS AMONG THE PEOPLE / GENESIS 6:9

START YOUR DAY RIHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 6:9

These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.

NOAH WAS A RIGHTEOUS MAN, BLAMELESS AMONG THE PEOPLE / GENESIS 6:9

While everyone else in those days lived wickedly (Genesis 6:5), God found that Noah still worshiped, obeyed and depended upon Him.

  1. “Blameless among the people of his time” makes it clear that he was not influenced by the immorality that surrounded him. Because he was a righteous man with a deep and holy respect for God and a bold resistance to popular opinion and behavior, Noah found favor with God (Genesis 5:8; 7:1; Hebrews 11:7; 2 Peter 2:5).
  2. Noah’s right standing with God was the result of God’s grace- His undeserved favor – and Noah’s faith in God (Genesis 5:9). Salvation today is also the result of God’s mercy and undeserved favor. We receive it only by faith, demonstrated by a sincere effort to follow God and avoid sin (Genesis 5:22; 7:5, 9, 16). Hebrews 11:4-7 states that Noah “became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.”
  3. The New Testament also states that Noah was “a preacher of righteousness” (2 Peter 2:5). This must be the constant testimony (One’s word of witness as a believer) of anyone who speaks for God.

THE LORD WAS GRIEVED / GENESIS 6:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAYILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 6:6

And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

THE LORD WAS GRIEVED / GENESIS 6:6

God is revealed in the Bible’s early chapters as a God who deals with people personally and is capable of emotion, disappointment and reaction against people’s willful rebellion.

  1. The word “grieved” implies that because of humanity’s sin, God’s attitude and outlook toward them changed from mercy and patience to judgment.
  2. Still, God’s character and ultimate purposes do not change (1 Samuel 15:29; James 1:17); therefore, He remains open and responsive to people who seek Him. God’s feelings, attitudes or actions do change whenever He finds a favorable response to His will and direction (Exodus 32:14; 2 Samuel 24:16; Jeremiah 18:7, 8; 26:3, 13, 19: Ezekiel 18; John 3:10).
  3. The fact that God can feel regret and grief makes it clear that He maintains a personal and intimate relationship with His creation. He loves people deeply, knows them completely and is fully aware of their circumstances (Psalms 139:7-18).

THE BLOOD OF CHRIST / HEBREWS 9:14

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Hebrews 9:14

How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

THE BLOOD OF CHRIST / HEBREWS 9:14

The blood of Jesus Christ, signifying His sacrifice for our sin, is central to the New Testament concept of redemption, spiritual salvation (1 Corinthians 10:16; 11:27; Ephesians 2:13; 1 Peter 1:2; Revelation 7:14; 12:11). As He died on the cross, Jesus shed His innocent blood in order to remove our sins and to restore our opportunity for a right relationship with God (Hebrews 5:8; Romans 5:19; Philippians 2:8; Leviticus 16).

By His blood, Christ Jesus accomplished the following:

  1. His blood provides forgiveness for the sins of all who turn from their own way and put their faith in Christ (Matthew 26:28).
  2. His blood ransoms (rescues, restores) all true believers from the control of Satan and evil powers (Acts 20:28; Ephesians 1:7; 1 Peter 1:18-19; Revelation 5:9; 12:11).
  3. His blood justifies (makes right with God) all who entrust their lives to Him (Romans 3:24-25).
  4. His blood cleanses believers’ consciences from guilt so that they might serve God with full assurance of salvation (Hebrews 9:14; 10:22; 13:18).
  5. His blood sanctifies (purifies, refines, develops, sets apart for God’s service) God’s people (Hebrews 13:12; 1 John 1:7-10).
  6. His blood opens the way for Christ’s followers to come directly to God through Christ in order to find grace, mercy, help and salvation (Hebrews 7:25; 10:19; Ephesians 2:13, 18).
  7. His blood is a guarantee of all the promises of the new covenant (Hebrews 10:29; 13:20; Matthew 26:28; 1 Corinthians 11:25).
  8. The saving, restoring and purifying power of Christ’s blood is continually made available to believers as they come to God through faith in Christ (Hebrews 7:25; 10:22; 1 John 1:7; Romans 3:25).

THE INNER ROOM / HEBREWS 9:7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Hebrews 9:7

But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:

THE INNER ROOM / HEBREWS 9:7

The inner sanctuary, called the Most Holy Place, symbolized God’s presence. No one other than the high priest could enter the Most Holy Place, and he could only do so once a year on the Day of Atonement (Hebrews 9:5). God was teaching that under the old covenant, unrestricted access to God’s presence was not yet possible because intimate companionship with Him could exist only when a person’s inward conscience had been cleansed perfectly (Hebrews 9:8-9). The law and sacrificial system could not provide such a cleansing. Only Jesus Christ’s perfect personal sacrifice for sin could provide complete cleansing from the guilt of sin.
