(KJV) Philemon 1:10
I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:

ONESIMUS – WHO BECAME MY SON / PHILEMON 1:10

Onesimus, a slave belonging to Philemon, had run away, possibly taking with him some of his master’s goods (Philemon 1:15-16, 18-19; Philemon 1:1-2; Philemon 1:6). Somehow, he reached Rome, where he met Paul and accepted a personal relationship with Christ under Pul’s ministry. Paul now writes this letter, asking Philemon to take Onesimus back with kindness, love and forgiveness.

(KJV) Philemon 1:6

That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.

BE ACTIVE IN SHARING YOUR FAITH / PHILEMON 1:6

Among the most rewarding experience in the Christian life is the privilege of introducing others to Jesus. Those who actively communicate their faith both in actions and words are fulfilling Jesus’ Great Commission to take His message to all the world (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15). Anyone who has had the opportunity to lead another person to faith in Jesus Christ knows the tremendous sense of joy, purpose and fulfillment that comes from helping someone enter a personal relationship with God. Leading others to Christ is perhaps the highest good we are influential in helping others receive eternal life, we gain “a full understanding of everything good we have in Christ” (Philemon 1:6).

A PRISONER OF CHRIST JESUS

Paul’s two-year imprisonment in Rome, he wrote this letter to Philemon (Philemon 1:1, 9; Acts 28:30).

THE CHURCH THAT MEETS IN YOUR HOME

Philemon must have made his home available as a place of worship and fellowship for the Christians in Colosse. House churches were common in New Testament times (Romans 16:5; 1 Corinthians 16:19; Colossians 4:15). It is not until the third century that separate church buildings are mentioned.

Yeast and honey were forbidden on the altar because they were used to cause the fermentation process. Fermentation, which involves change, breaking down or decay, often symbolized evil (Exodus 13:7; Mark 8:15).

LAID THEIR HANDS ON THEM / ACTS 6:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

LAID THEIR HANDS ON THEM / ACTS 6:6

In the New Testament, the laying on of hands was used in five ways:

  1. In connection with miracles of healing (Acts 28:8; Matthew 5:23; 6:5).
  2. In blessing others (Matthew 19:13,15).
  3. In connection with the baptism in the Spirit (Acts 8:17; Acts 8:19; Act 19:6).
  4. In commissioning (officially assigning) people for a specific work or responsibility (Acts 6:6; Acts 13:3; 1 Timothy 5:22).
  5. In conveying or recognizing spiritual gifts by the church leaders (Acts 8:17; Acts 19:6; 1 Timothy 4:14; 2 Timothy 1:6).

As one of the ways by which God commissions people to use spiritual gifts (God-given abilities to honor Him and benefit others) and also conveys His blessings to people, laying on of hands became a foundational teaching in the early church (Hebrews 6:2). It must not be detached from prayer because prayer focuses on God as the source of the gifts, healings or baptism in the Holy Spirit, not the person who is ministering.

The two Greek words that describe the responsibilities of these seven men (“wait on”) is the verb from which the noun “deacon” comes (later we read of deacons in the church, Philippians 1:1; 1 Timothy 3:8-13). The Greek word for deacon can also be translated “minister” or “servant.” Ordaining or commissioning the seven men here meant primarily two things.

  1. It was public testimony or recognition by the church that these seven men has a history f showing godly character and faithfulness to the Spirit’s leading (1 Timothy 3:1-10).
  2. It was an act of setting these men apart, dedicating them to God’s work and confirming their willingness to accept their God-given responsibilities.

FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / ACTS 13:52

(KJV) Acts 13:52
And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / ACTS 13:52

The form of the Greek verb translated “filled” expresses continued action in past time. The disciples were being continually filled and empowered day by day. That is, they were like containers filled with fresh water, which were continually having more fresh water poured into them so that they overflowed and affected everything around them. The Spirit’s fullness is not merely a one-time initial experience, but rather a life of fresh and renewed fillings that give God’s people the ability to accomplish specific tasks, meet specific refreshment to others (Ephesians 5:18).

FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / ACTS 9:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / ACTS 9:17

Three days after Paul’s supernatural encounter with Christ on the road to Damascus, at which time Paul surrendered his life to Christ, he is filled with the Holy Spirit. Paul’s experience parallels that of the disciples at Pentecost. First, he experiences the new spiritual birth and is saved (Acts 9:3-19); then later he is “filled with the Holy Spirit.” Although Luke does not specifically say that Paul spoke in tongues when he received the gift of the Holy Spirit, it is reasonable to assume that he did for these reasons:

  1. The pattern revealed in the New Testament is that a person filled with the Spirit began to speak in tongues (languages they had never learned, but spoke as the Spirit enabled them, Acts 2:4; Acts 10:14-45; Acts 10:46; Acts 11:15; Acts 19:6).
  2. Paul himself says that he frequently spoke in tongues: “I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you” (1 Corinthians 14:18).

MY SERVANTS, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN – IN THOSE DAYS / ACTS 2:18

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

MY SERVANTS, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN – IN THOSE DAYS / ACTS 2:18

MY SERVANTS, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN

According to Joel’s prophecy, quoted here by Peter, the baptism in the Holy Spirit is for those already in God’s kingdom – who are already “born-again” (John 3:3-4; John 3:5; John 3:6) followers of Christ. The promise applies to all male and female, who have devoted themselves to Jesus and who belong to God.

IN THOSE DAYS

Peter, quoting Joel, says that God will pour out His Spirit “in those days” (Acts 2:17) The outpouring of the Holy Spirit (when God generously sends His Spirit to fill, empower and live through His followers) and the supernatural signs and expressions that come with it cannot be limited to just the one “day” of Pentecost. The power and benefits of the Holy Spirit are available for every Christian throughout the church age. That is the entire period of time between Christ’s first coming (or more precisely surrounding His resurrection, return to heaven and sending the Holy Spirit) and His second coming (Revelation 19-20; Acts 2:39). This, of course, included the time in which we now live.

(KJV) 2 Kings 17:16

And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal.

BOWED DOWN TO ALL THE STARRY HOSTS / 2 KINGS 17:16

The Israelites worshiped gods of astrology. They believed such gods would provide guidance and a better life, including prosperity fertility, health, pleasure, wellbeing and security (Judges 2:13). For this reason, Paul calls greed “idolatry” (Colossians 3:5) because it causes people to depend on something other than God to fulfill their needs and desires. Jesus Himself says we cannot pursue wealth as a major goal in life and serve God at the same time (Matthew 6:24; Ephesians 5:5).
