FOLLY / MARK 7:22

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 7:22

Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

FOLLY / MARK 7:22

This involves a lack of moral integrity (honesty, truth, wholeness, honor, reliability), intellectual understanding and spiritual discernment. It is the opposite of godly wisdom, and it stems from the absence of a true personal relationship with God. In a sense, the term sums up all the evils that Jesus said make a person “unclean” (Mark 7:20).

MEN’S HEARTS / MARK 7:20-23

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 7:20-23

And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

MEN’S HEARTS / MARK 7:20-23

In this passage “makes … ‘unclean’” (Mark 7:20) means being spiritually corrupted in a way that separates a person from the life and purposes of God and ruins his or her relationship with Christ. Throughout God’s Word, the “heart” represents a person’s entire inner being, including the intellect, emotions, motives, desires and will. An impure heart will corrupt one’s thoughts, feelings, words and actions (Proverbs 4:23; Matthew 12:34; 15:19). Those who follow Christ must live in a way that reflects a heart that is new and transformed – different from what is natural in the world – a heart that is becoming more and more like Jesus (Luke 6:45).

MAKE HIM ‘UNCLEAN’ / MARK 7:18

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 7:18

And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;

MAKE HIM ‘UNCLEAN’ / MARK 7:18

Jesus speaks of being “unclean” or corrupted spiritually. He is referring to foods that enter a person’s body but do not affect the heart (Mark 7:19). This verse cannot be used to justify using harmful substances like drugs or intoxicating drinks, since using such things often result in the sins listed in Mark 7:21-22 (Proverbs 23:31). Also notice that when Jesus says that ‘nothing outside a man can make him ‘unclean’ by going into him” (Mark 7:15, 18), He is definitely talking about food (Mark 7:19); He is not referring to things that enter our minds and affect our thoughts in immoral ways. The principle in this passage must not be used to justify ungodly activities and behaviors (sexually suggestive entertainment, immodest attire, materialism) that affect what goes into our minds and eventually ‘comes out” (Mark 7:20) in the form of sins condemned in Mark 7:21-22.

THE TRADITIONS OF MEN / MARK 7:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 7:8

For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

THE TRADITIONS OF MEN / MARK 7:8

The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were guilty of placing human tradition above God’s direct revelation. They followed their own laws and regulations even when those things were not consistent with the standards of God’s Word. Jesus is not condemning all traditions here, but only those that contradict or conflict with the commands and principles of God’s Word. Traditions or rules must be based on, and remain consistent with, truths found in the Bible (2 Thessalonians 2:15). Churches must resist the tendency to promote their own rules, traditions, ideas and preferences above the Bible. God’s written Word as revealed in the Bible is the only infallible (unfailing, flawless, perfectly reliable) rule for faith and living; human ideas must never become more important than God’s Word (Mark 7:13; Matthew 15:6).

THEIR HEARTS ARE FAR FROM ME / MARK 7:6-7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 7:6-7

He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

THEIR HEARTS ARE FAR FROM ME / MARK 7:6-7

The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were guilty of the sin of legalism, which substitutes outward acts or words for true godly attitudes that come from a holy relationship with God (Matthew 5:20: Matthew 5:27-28; Matthew 6:1-7; John 1:13; John 3:3-6; Isaiah 1:11; Amos 4:4-5). Legalists seem to honor God with their words, but their hearts (motives and affections) are far from Him and His purposes. This means that they might appear outwardly to live right and seek what pleases God, but inwardly they have no real love for Him.

  1. Legalism is not simply living by the laws or standards of God’s Word because such standards are good and proper if based on God’s commands and principles. Rather, legalism has to do with the person’s motive for following God and His purposes. Any motive that does not flow out of a true and active faith in Christ and the desire to obey and please Him is legalism (Matthew 6:1-7; John 14:21). Legalism often involves man-made regulations that have little or nothing to do with God’s original commands. The fault of legalism is depending on these laws and standards for spiritual worth or salvation, which is not possible apart from faith in Christ.
  2. In this age of grace (God’s underserved favor and love expressed through Christ’s death for our sins), we are spiritually saved through faith in Christ and not our own efforts. This is not to say that Christians should neglect the instructions, disciplines and duties of Christ’s law and God’s Word. The Bible teaches us to show our love for Christ by being faithful in all these areas. The New Testament speaks of the “perfect law that gives freedom” (James 1:25), “the royal law” (James 2:8), the “law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2) and the “law of the Spirit” (Romans 8:2) and the “law of the Spirit” (Romans 8:2). In God’s Word we find (a) positive commands, which are things we should do and practice (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18), (b) negative commands, which are things we should avoid or refrain from doing (Romans 12:2), (c) basic principles, which are ethical truths that reflect God’s character and form the basis of His laws (1 Corinthians 8:13) and (d) words spoken by spiritual leaders with God-given authority in spiritual matters (Ephesians 4:11-12; 1 Timothy 3:5; Hebrews 13:7, 17).

FIVE LOAVES … TWO FISH … THANKSGIVING AT MEALTIMES / MARK 6:41

(KJV) Mark 6:41

Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.

FIVE LOAVES … TWO FISH … THANKSGIVING AT MEALTIMES / MARK 6:41

Before eating, Christ thanked His heavenly Father for the food. Christians today ought to follow His example and give thanks at every meal as a means of recognizing God’s care and provision for us. This opportunity becomes an act of worship that honors God. For more on giving thanks before meals, see 1 Samuel 9:13; Matthew 14:19; Matthew 15:36; 26:26; Romans 14:6; 1 Corinthians 10:31; 1 Timothy 4:4-5.

COMPASSION / MARK 6:34

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 6:34

And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.

COMPASSION / MARK 6:34

Compassion is a deep, heartfelt emotion that involves feeling deep sorrow for another’s suffering and misfortune. But it goes beyond a feeling of identifying with the afflicted. True compassion is willing to take action to help a person in need. It is a character trait both of God (Deuteronomy 30:3; 2 Kings 13:23; Psalms 78:38; 11:4; 15:32; Luke 7:13). For this reason, God expects an attitude of compassion to be a part of the Christian’s life (Matthew 18:33; Luke 10:33).

ANOINTED … WITH OIL / MARK 6:13

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 6:13

And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.

ANOINTED … WITH OIL / MARK 6:13

Healing by anointing with oil (putting a little oil on the person who needs healing) is mentioned only here and in James 5:14. In the ancient world, olive oil was commonly used as a medicine or a salve (Isaiah 1:6; Luke 10:34), but God’s people throughout the Old Testament used it as part of ceremonies that installed or commissioned leaders for service to God. The oil in this case was probably used as a symbol of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit (Zechariah 4:3-6; Zechariah 4:3; Zechariah 4:6) and as a point of contact to encourage faith.

LACK OF FAITH / MARK 6:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 6:6

And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.

LACK OF FAITH / MARK 6:6

Just as a lack of faith hindered the working of miracles in Jesus’ hometown, so unbelief in the church still gets in the way of powerful things Christ desires to do among His people today. Failing to accept what the Bible says is true, denying that the gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12; 1 Corinthians 14) are for the church today or rejecting God’s standards of right and wrong will prevent the Lord from showing His power among His people. Christ’s followers must maintain an intense spiritual hunger for God’s Word and pray, “increase our faith” (Luke 17:5; Matthew 17:20).

JESUS … A PROPHET / MARK 6:4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DIALY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 6:4

But Jesus, said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.

JESUS … A PROPHET / MARK 6:4

Jesus is portrayed in the Gospels as a prophet (Mark 6:4, 15; Matthew 21:11; Luke 4:24; Acts 3:20-23) in a way that was consistent with the mission and message of God’s prophets throughout the Old Testament. The following characteristics identify Jesus as a prophet:

  1. He was a man filled and empowered by the Holy Spirit and full of the knowledge of God’s Word (Matthew 21:42; 22:29; Luke 4:1, 18; 24:27; John 3:34).
  2. His life was characterized by intimate spiritual unity and relationship with God, His Father (Luke 5:16).
  3. He gave prophetic predictions, some of which have already taken place and others which pertain to the end times yet to come (Matthew 24; Luke 19:43-44).
  4. He performed symbolic actions that represented spiritual truths and expressed a sincere passion for God’s honor (Matthew 21:12-13; John 2:13-17).
  5. He exposed the shallow and unfaithful hearts of the religious leaders and criticized the way they followed their own traditions rather than God’s Word (Mark 7:7-9, 13).
  6. He shared God’s sorrow and suffering over the spiritually lost condition of those who refused to turn from their own ways and follow God (Luke 13:34; 19:41).
  7. He focused on the moral and ethical principles of God’s Word (holiness, justice, righteousness, love, mercy) in contrast to relying on religious ceremonies to keep people in a right relationship with God (Mark 12:38-40; Matthew 23:1-36).
  8. He proclaimed the supreme and final reign and judgment of God (Matthew 11:22, 24; 10:15; Luke 10:12, 14).
  9. He called people to repentance – to change their attitude toward God, admit their sin, turn from their own way and begin following God and His purposes (Mark 6:12; Matthew 4:17).
