EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE / MARK 9:23

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 9:23

Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE / MARK 9:23

Jesus’ statement must not be taken as an unconditional promise.

  1. The “Everything” does not mean everything that comes to our minds or that we desire for ourselves. Our faith and prayers must be based on God’s will (His purposes, plans and desires). We must not expect God to answer a prayer for something that is foolish, selfish or wrongly motivated (James 4:3).
  2. The faith required for powerful and miraculous acts must be received and used as a gift from God. He inspires this kind of faith in the hearts of believers who are already living faithfully according to His purposes and desires (Matthew 17:20).

UNBELIEVING GENERATION / MARK 9:19

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 9:19

He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.

UNBELIEVING GENERATION / MARK 9:19

Failure to stand in effective spiritual warfare against demons and overcome their influence and control is viewed by Jesus as a spiritual weakness and lack of faith on the part of Christ’s disciples (Matthew 17:17). No victory comes where there is a lack of dedication and reliance on Christ.

ELIJAH HAS COME / MARK 9:13

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 9:13

But I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him.

ELIJAH HAS COME / MARK 9:13

This refers to John the Baptist – a prophet like Elijah of the Old Testament. John suffered persecution from Herod and from those who were loyal to Herod (Mark 6:17-29), just as Elijah suffered opposition from King Ahab and Jezebel (1 Kings 19:1-10) for his strong message of truth and spiritual challenge.

ASHAMED OF ME AND MY WORDS / MARK 8:38

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 8:38

Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

ASHAMED OF ME AND MY WORDS / MARK 8:38

Jesus sees the world system and society in which we live as an “adulterous and sinful generation.” Most of humankind are unfaithful to God’s purposes for their lives and are outright rebellious against Him. When Christ returns, He will reject those people who are more concerned about how people view them than how God views them (Matthew 7:23; Matthew 25:41-46; Luke 9:26; 13:27).

DENY HIMSELF AND TAKE UP HIS CROSS / MARK 8:34

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 8:34

And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

DENY HIMSELF AND TAKE UP HIS CROSS / MARK 8:34

To deny self means to put aside our own selfish desires in order to follow Christ and serve His purposes, whatever the cost. The cross of Christ is a symbol of suffering (1 Peter 2:21; 4:13), death (Acts 10:39), shame (Hebrews 12:2), ridicule (Matthew 27:39), rejection (1 Peter 2:4) and self-denial (Matthew 16:24). A follower of Christ who takes up his or her cross is making a deliberate choice to deny his or her own selfish interests and way of life (Luke 14:26-27) and to boldly identify with Christ. That person’s own identity gets so connected with that of Jesus that the person’s own reputation cannot be separated from his or her relationship with Christ. This kind of identification with Christ Jesus requires a commitment in four areas of struggle and suffering for the sake of Christ.

  1. We struggle in a lifelong battle against sin (Romans 6; 1 Peter 4:1-2) and must willingly endure suffering by crucifying (putting to death, not feeding, becoming unresponsive to) our own sinful desires (Romans 6; 8:13; Galatians 2:20; 6:14; Titus 2:12; 1 Peter 2:11, 21-24).
  2. We struggle in a war against Satan and the demonic powers of evil and must be willing to suffer rejection and hardship in order to promote Christ’s purposes on earth (2 Corinthians 10:4-5; 6:7; Ephesians 6:12; 1 Timothy 6:12). In the process, we will experience spiritual opposition and hostility (2 Corinthians 6:3-7; 11:23-29; 1 Peter 5:8-10), and we will face the resistance and persecution as we stand against false teachers who corrupt the true message of Christ (Matthew 23:1-36; Galatians 1:9; Philippians 1:15-17).
  3. We suffer hatred and ridicule from the world (John 15:18-25; Hebrews 11:25-26) because of our devotion to Christ and His standards of truth and right (1 Corinthians 1:21-27). People will strongly oppose us because our example and testimony – which must be conveyed with love and humility – expose the evil of their beliefs, behaviors and lifestyles (John 7:7).
  4. Like Jesus, we may also suffer ridicule and persecution from religious people or ungodly leaders (Mark 8:31; Mark 8:15).

GET BEHIND ME SATAN / MARK 8:33

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 8:33

But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.

GET BEHIND ME SATAN / MARK 8:33

Peter’s reaction shows that suffering and rejection had no place in his view of the Messiah (Savior, Christ) at this point. Peter’s attempt to save Jesus from suffering and dying (Mark 8:32) was presenting the same temptation and point of view that Satan laid before Jesus at the beginning of His ministry (Matthew 8:4-10; Matthew 8:4; Matthew 8:10).

After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.

HIS SIGHT WAS RESTORED / MARK 8:25

This healing in Bethsaida is the only instance of a gradual cure by Jesus. It teaches that not every healing happens instantly. A person’s gradual healing can be difficult to understand. Yet we can still be honest about our needs and situations, never exaggerating what Christ has done to make ourselves seem more important.

YEAST / MARK 8:15

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 8:15

And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.

YEAST / MARK 8:15

Yeast is a microorganism that ferments sugars and other carbohydrates, causing various reactions. A tiny amount of yeast will spread throughout the entire batch of bread dough, making it rise. Yeast also ferments wine, making it alcoholic and intoxicating. In the New Testament, “yeast” is usually a symbol for evil or corruption (Matthew 13:33; Matthew 16:6; Matthew 16:11; Luke 12:1; 1 Corinthians 5:6-8; Galatians 5:9; Exodus 13:7).

  1. The yeast of the Pharisees refers to their religious traditions, which caused them to set aside God’s true commands and close their spiritual eyes to portions of His Word and what He desires (Mark 7:5-8).
  2. The yeast of Herod (Herod Antipas was the ruler in Galilee) represented a worldly mindset that resisted God and demanded a sign from Jesus (Luke 23:8) to prove He was God. This was similar to the attitude of the Sadducees (Matthew 3:7). Followers of Christ must always be on guard against those who preach or teach human ideas or traditions that change the message of Christ as revealed in the Bible. Accepting such views will cause people in the church to lose their devotion to Christ and may cause them to turn against Him and His Word.

I HAVE COMPASSION / MARK 8:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 8:2

And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.

I HAVE COMPASSION / MARK 8:2

Jesus always looked with compassion (Mark 6:34) on the needs and suffering of humanity (Mark 1:41). Throughout the Gospels (the accounts of Jesus’ life given by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John), the writers often mention Jesus’ compassion as the motive for His miracles and healings. Jesus still has a deep compassion for human needs and hurts, and He continues to show it by taking care of our needs – often in miraculous ways that are greater than our understanding. In times of troubles, we can always come to Him in prayer with the assurance that we will receive grace, mercy and help (Matthew 6:31-32; Hebrews 4:14-16; 7:25).

CHILDREN’S BREAD / MARK 7:27

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 7:27

But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.

CHILDREN’S BREAD / MARK 7:27

The word “children” refers to Israel. Jesus is teaching that His message and plan of spiritual salvation must be taken first to Israel (through whom God had been revealing and working out that plan all throughout the Old Testament). The woman understands this, yet she responds to Christ in a wise and persistent manner, which shows a strong faith. Jesus is not disrespecting the woman, but rather He is testing her faith. She fully understands Jesus’ analogy of the family pet not having the same privileges as the children. She makes the case that it is God’s purpose for Gentiles (people other than Jews) to benefit from God’s blessings on Israel. This woman seemed to understand that the privileges of God’s kingdom are available to all who demonstrate a true and persistent faith in Christ (Matthew 15:28). The Lord rewards her faith by healing her child (Mark 7:28-30). God’s people, whether praying for themselves or others, must often show perseverance. This is not because God is reluctant to answer us, but because it shows our dependence on Christ even when we do not understand everything (Luke 18:1-8).
