(KJV) Luke 15:4

What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?

THE LOST SHEEP / LUKE 15:4

The key verse in Luke’s Gospel states that “the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost” (Luke 19:10). The three parables (brief symbolic stories that teach a lesson or make a point) in Luke 15 are presented to teach us the purpose of Jesus’ earthly mission: God’s desire to save people spiritually so they can have an eternal relationship with Him. Jesus teaches that

  1. Pursuing those who are spiritually lost – who do not yet know Him personally – so that they can experience His forgiveness and a restored relationship with Him is a top priority of God (Luke 15:4, 8, 20, 24).
  2. God and all of heaven rejoice when even one sinner turns from his or her own way and accepts Christ’s forgiveness and new life (Luke 15:7, 10).
  3. No amount of sacrifice or suffering is too great in helping to bring spiritually lost people to Jesus (Luke 15:4, 8). The fact that these are top priorities of all those who already know and follow Christ.

THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP / LUKE 14:28-33

Jesus teaches that whoever desires to follow Him should first decide whether he or she is prepared to pay the cost. The cost of real discipleship (the process of being a disciplined follower of Christ, learning to become more like Him) is the willingness to give up or put aside anything else in life – relationships, possessions, positions, plans, opportunities, etc. (Luke 14:33). This does not mean that we must reject all we have or deny our God-given abilities and interests, but all we have must be devoted to Christ, placed at His service and under His guidance (Luke 13:14; John 16:33; 2 Timothy 3:12).

DOES NOT HATE HIS FATHER / LUKE 14:26-27

 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. 27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

DOES NOT HATE HIS FATHER / LUKE 14:26-27

Jesus uses a hyperbole (a clear exaggeration expressed for greater effect) to make the point about loving Him far above anything else. In this sense, the word “hate” means “love less” (compare this text with Matthew 10:37; Genesis 29:31; Malachi 1:3). Jesus demands that our loyalty to and love for Him be greater than every other affection and attachment in life, including our own families.

THE PARABLE OF THE GREAT BANQUET / LUKE 14:15-24

THE PARABLE OF THE GREAT BANQUET / LUKE 14:15-24

Although this parable originally applied to Israel and its widespread rejection of Christ and His message, it also applies to churches and individual believers today. 

  1. The subject of this parable is Christ’s future heavenly kingdom and those who will actually be a part of it following His return (Luke 14:14-15; 22:18).
  2. Those who were initially invited represent the Jews and their leaders who claimed to be waiting for the fulfillment of God’s kingdom on earth. But when Christ came, they refused His invitation to be part of that kingdom because He did not fit their expectations. Today, Christ’s invitation to eternal life goes out to all people. Many of those who appear to have received and accepted the invitation will ultimately pass up their opportunity to be with Christ. This is because other interests and concerns will take priority, and their love for Jesus and the heavenly kingdom will grow cold (Luke 14:17-20). None of the excuses given was genuine. For example, a person would not buy land or purchase oxen without first inspecting these things. 
  3. Such people do not set goals or follow through with them based on godly, eternal standards (Luke 14:18-20). They reject the Bible’s challenge to set their “minds on things above, not on earthly things,” while waiting for Christ to return (Colossians 3:1-4). Their life’s hopes and aspirations are centered on worldly, temporary things; and they no longer passionately desire “a better country – a heavenly one” (Hebrews 11:16).
  4. Luke 14:21-23 teaches us that there will also be those whose hearts are fully devoted to Christ and focused on eternal issues. They respond to Christ’s invitation without reservation and have nothing in life they value more than the opportunity to be with Jesus. Such people are able to pray with the Spirit and the bride (the rest of God’s faithful people in the church); “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus” (Revelation 22:17).
  5. Followers of Jesus can be part of the invitation process, helping to deliver His message to people in “the streets and alleys” (Luke 14:23). It is often in these seemingly unlikely places where people are more ready to respond to Christ’s message. Yet Christ’s heavenly kingdom will be full of “unlikely” people.

EXALTS HIMSELF … HUMBLED / LUKE 14:11

Jesus warns that those who proudly promote themselves and their own interests in this life will be put to shame in the next. Much more important than earthly honor is our place of honor with God. That honor cannot be gained by self-promotion. It comes only through humility and servanthood (Luke 14:12-14 and by living in a way that honors God and receives living in a way that honors God and receives the reward of “praise that comes from the only God” (John 5:44).

This was a buildup or collecting of fluid that seriously affected the function and mobility of the body. The Greek word for this is a medical term found only here in the New Testament, which reflects Luke’s knowledge as a physician.

It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

THE YEAST / LUKE 13:21

As with the parable of the mustard seed (Luke 13:19), there are two slightly different views of this parable. 

  1. Some see it as simply referring to the powerful influence of God’s kingdom as it works in people from the inside out to affect the world. 
  2. Others consider the fact that yeast in the Old Testament normally represented the presence of evil or impurity that causes something to ferment or become corrupt (Exodus 12:19; 13:6-8; Leviticus 2:11; Leviticus 6:17; Deuteronomy 16:3-4; Amos 4:4-5). In the New Testament, yeast represents the false teaching and hypocritical lifestyles of the Pharisees, Sadducees (Luke 16:22) and Herodians (Mark 8:15). In 1 Corinthians 5:6-8 Paul considers yeast to represent “malice and wickedness,” while the absence of yeast represents “sincerity and truth” (Galatians 5:9). For these reasons, many understand this parable to teach how evil, false doctrine and spiritual impurity exist and spread throughout all areas of God’s work, deceiving many people. Both angles of interpretation express valid truths about God’s kingdom on earth. 

The opportunity for evil to spread its influence into God’s kingdom happens when: (a) human ideas take priority over the authority of Scripture (Matthew 22:23, 29); (b) worldliness and immoral behavior creep into the church (1 Corinthians 5:1-2; Revelation 2-3); (c)people seek position or power within the church because they are concerned more about their own ambition than about God’s honor (Matthew 23); (d) false teachers are given a position of influence (Matthew 24:11; Matthew 24:24) and gain control through their false teaching (Galatians 1:9); (e) people who claim to be Christians appear righteous, but are not really following Christ (Matthew 23; Jude 1:12-19). In the end times, before Christ returns, these evil influences will work their way into much of God’s work in Christian churches, denominations, colleges and seminaries until the true New Testament message of Christ and Biblical standards of right and wrong are diluted and corrupted on a massive scale (Luke 18:8; Matthew 24:10-12; Galatians 1:9; 2 Thessalonians 2:3; 1 Timothy 4:1; Revelation 2-3).

Every Christian must be careful that the yeast of evil does not permeate his or her own life. The secret of victory is keeping our eyes focused faithfully on Jesus (Titus 2:13; Hebrews 12:2, 15), rejecting the temptations and evil influences of the world (James 1:27; 1 John 2:15-17), studying and applying God’s Word (John 15:7; James 1:21), looking forward to Christ’s return (Luke 12:35-40), continually listening to the inner voice of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:12-14; Galatians 5:16-18), being willing to suffer (1 Peter 4:1-2), fighting against evil (1 Corinthians 10:6; 1 Thessalonians 5:15; 1 Peter 3:11), defending the message of Christ (Philippians 1:17) and putting on the full spiritual armor of God (Ephesians 6:11-18).

It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.

MUSTARD SEED / LUKE 13:19

The parables of the mustard seed and the yeast go together, but there is debate as to their exact meaning. Many interpreters see them as speaking mainly of the growth and influence of God’s kingdom. Others accept this interpretation to a degree but also view certain elements of the stories a s describing how evil eventually tries to work its way into God’s visible kingdom (the church, the community of Jesus’ true followers) on earth. The parable of the mustard seed illustrates the small beginning of God’s kingdom and its development through the ages. Though its start was so small and so simple – Jesus and a small group of committed disciples (John 20:22; Acts 2:4) – the visible kingdom did spread through the ages. But its great size and influence also attract “the birds of the air,” which are really evil imposters who take away the seed of truth (as in Matthew 13:4, 19). In Revelation 18:2, Babylon the Great (representing the backslidden, unfaithful and rebellious church) becomes a home for demons and “a haunt for every unclean and detestable bird” (Revelation 2 – 3 for Christ’s description of how spiritual decay had permeated the majority of the seven churches; Revelation 18:4).

Jesus sees some physical illness as the direct result of demonic activity or oppression. This crippled woman was troubled by “a spirit” (a representative of Satan; Luke 13:16; Matthew 9:32-33; 12:22; Mark 5:1-5; 9:17-18; Acts 10:38).

The parable of the fig tree refers primarily to Israel (Luke 3:9; Hosea 9:10; Joel 1:7). However, its truth applies also to all individuals who claim to believe in Jesus yet fail to turn from their own way and truly follow Him. While God gives everyone sufficient opportunity to repent (to admit their sin, turn from their own way and follow Him), He will not tolerate offenses against Him forever. A time will come when God’s grace will be withdrawn and those who have refused Him will be punished without mercy (Luke 20:16; 21:20-24).
