THE PARABLE OF THE GOOD SAMARITAN / LUKE 10:30

(KJV) Luke 10:30

And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

THE PARABLE OF THE GOOD SAMARITAN / LUKE 10:30

This parable emphasizes that true faith and obedience – the kind that leads to spiritual salvation and a genuine relationship with Christ – include an active compassion for those in need. Notice that Jesus never really answered the question, “Who is my neighbor?” Instead, He basically told the lawyer to reach out and be a neighbor (“Go and do likewise,” Luke 10:37) – to be proactive in helping and serving others. The call to love God is a call to love others. 

  1. The new heart and life that Christ gives to those who accept Him will produce love, mercy and compassion for those who are hurting, troubled and distressed. All Christ’s followers are responsible to act on the Holy Spirit’s love within them and not to neglect opportunities to demonstrate Christ’s compassion.
  2. Those who profess to be Christians yet are unmoved by the needs and suffering of others, prove that they are not really following Christ (Luke 10:25-28, 31-37; Matthew 25:41-46; 1 John 3:16-20). The greater lesson in this example seems to be that true compassion did not dwell in the heart of the religious leader (the priest), or the ministry associate (the Levite, who was from a family of worship leaders), but a despised enemy (Luke 9:53; 2 Kings 17:24). Jesus was speaking of a compassion that knew no national boundaries.

Jesus once again points out that the “kingdom of God” – His ultimate authority, power, plans and purposes on earth and into eternity – is strongly associated with healing the sick (Luke 9:1-2).

I SAW SATAN FALL / LUKE 10:18

(KJV) Luke 10:18

 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.

I SAW SATAN FALL / LUKE 10:18

In the original Greek, the tense of this phrase literally means “I was watching Satan fall like lightning.” Jesus saw in the spiritual realm what was happening as disciples ministered with His authority: Satan’s forces were defeated over and over again. Jesus’ remarks kept the disciples’ ministry in perspective. He shared their joy (Luke 9:21) and enthusiasm for God’s work, affirming that they had done effective spiritual battle and won significant victories over evil. But this statement was also warning the disciples not to become proud about their ministry. Jesus was the power behind their work, and He had literally witnessed Satan’s downfall and defeat from before the world began. The most important issue in their ministry by far was that they and others who received the message now had a place in heaven (Luke 9:20).

Believers who faithfully follow God’s will (His plans, purposes and desires) will face and be threatened by many dangers. Their message, methods, character and even their lives will be opposed and attacked by ungodly people and destructive forces of evil in the world. Knowing this, we must pray for God’s presence, protection and provision.

We must be careful that our loyalty to and enthusiasm for Christ do not cause us to be violent against those who do not know Christ and are spiritually lost. It is God’s place to judge people in the end; but for now it is our place to continue to reach out to people with the love and message of Christ.

THE PEOPLE DID NOT WELCOME HIM / LUKE 9:52-53

And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him. 53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.

THE PEOPLE DID NOT WELCOME HIM / LUKE 9:52-53

Samaritans were mixed race of descendants that originated from the intermarriage of Old Testament Israelites who were left behind when Israel was conquered and exiled by the Assyrians in 722 B.C. and the people of other nations who were brought into the land by the Assyrians (2 Kings 17:24). Since the return of the Jews to their homeland many years later, there had been open hostility between Jews and Samaritans. The contention was still strong during Jesus’ time (John 14:9). Since Jews considered Samaritans to be spiritually inferior, Samaritan attacks were a serious threat to Jews who traveled through this area to Jerusalem to observe religious festivals.

And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.

THE TRANSFIGURATION / LUKE 9:29

In this event referred to as “the transfiguration,” Jesus’ appearance was transformed in the presence of three disciples, giving them a glimpse of His heavenly glory – God in human flesh (2 Peter 1:16-18; Matthew 17:2). This experience served as:

  1. An encouragement to Jesus as He would soon face death on the cross (Matthew 16:21).
  2. An announcement to the disciples that Jesus had to suffer on the cross (Luke 9:31).
  3. An endorsement by God that Jesus was His true Son – the only one qualified to represent both God and humanity in restoring the relationship broken by human sin (Luke 9:35). Notice that when the disciples wanted to honor the three individuals, including Christ, the other two disappeared; and God affirmed that Christ alone was worthy of their worship.

To be ashamed of Jesus means to experience embarrassment because of our identification with the life, values and goals that Jesus taught. It means to be ashamed of His Word, ashamed to claim that everything in it is from God, ashamed to live by it and defend it. People who feel this way about Christ cut themselves off from Him. He will have no choice but to reject and condemn them on judgment day (Matthew 10:33; Mark 8:34; Romans 1:16; 2 Timothy 1:8, 12, 16; Revelation 3:14; Revelation 3:15-16).

WHOEVER LOSES HIS LIFE / LUKE 9:24

For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

WHOEVER LOSES HIS LIFE / LUKE 9:24

This statement from Jesus is found in all four Gospels (the narrative accounts of Jesus’ life recorded by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). Two of the Gospels contain it more than once (Matthew 10:38-39; 16:24-25; Mark 8:34-35; Luke 14:26-27; 17:33; and in a slightly different form in John 12:25). No other statement from Jesus received as much attention by the gospel writers. This, however, does not necessarily refer to a physical loss of life. Sometimes the greater challenge is continuing to live faithfully for Him during difficult situations. If personal happiness and pleasure are our main goals in life, instead of living in God’s plan and by His principles, we will find only disappointment and spiritual loss. But if we are willing to put aside our own ways and make our relationship with Jesus our top priority, basing our lives on His Word, we will find true life and joy – now and for eternity.
