GOD MY SAVIOR / LUKE 1:46-47

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 1:46-47

And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, 47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

GOD MY SAVIOR / LUKE 1:46-47

In these words, Mary recognizes her own need of spiritual salvation. Just as anyone who ever lives, she too was a sinner who needed Christ as “Savior.” The idea that Mary was immaculately conceived (the notion that her soul was free from original sin and separation from God, which has been passed sown to all humans since Adam and Eve first defied God) and lived faultlessly is nowhere taught in God’s Word (Romans 3:9,23). This entire passage of “Mary’s Song” is one of four hymns, or songs of praise to God, preserved in Luke (Luke ;68-79; 2:14, 29-32). This hymn has become known as the Magnificat (the opening word in the Latin Vulgate translation), which means “glorifies.”

(KJV) Luke 1:38

And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

AS YOU HAVE SAID / LUKE 1:38

Mary submitted herself completely to God’s will (what He desires and plans based on His character and purposes) and trusted His message. She willingly accepted the honor and the criticism that being Jesus’ mother would bring. Part o the criticism and rejection would likely come right away as her body showed signs of being pregnant before marriage (Luke 2:5; Matthew 1:18,19) through a miracle of the Holy Spirit. Young women in the church should follow Mary’s example in sexual purity, love for God, faith in His Word and a willingness to obey the Holy Spirit, no matter what He asks.

THE HOLY ONE / LUKE 1:34-35

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 1:34-35

Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? 35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

THE HOLY ONE / LUKE 1:34-35

Both Luke and Matthew state clearly and unmistakably that Jesus was born of a virgin (Luke 1:27; Matthew 1:18; Matthew 1:23). The Holy Spirit would work a miracle within Mary’s body, and the child would be conceived only by a supernatural act of God. As a result, Jesus would be completely “holy” (pure, perfect, spiritually complete and entirely devoted to God’s purposes, Luke 1:35); in His case, this meant that He came into the world unstained by sin (unlike all others born into the human race) and free from spiritual corruption.

YOU WHO ARE HIGHLY FAVORED / LUKE 1:28

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 1:28

And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

YOU WHO ARE HIGHLY FAVORED / LUKE 1:28

While Mary was in a way favored above all women in being chosen as the mother of Jesus, the New Testament writers never taught nor suggested that she is to be worshiped, prayed to or given special titles. Mary deserves our respect, but only her son is worthy of our worship.

  1. Note that Mary was chosen because she found favor with God (Genesis 6:8). Her humble and godly life pleased God to such an extent the He chose her for this most important task (2 Timothy 2:21).
  2. Mary’s blessing would not only bring her great joy, but also much suffering and pain (Luke 2:35) because her Son would be widely rejected and then executed for no fault of His own. In this world, when God calls someone to a specific mission for Him, it will almost always involve blessing and suffering, joy and sadness, successes and disappointments.

PLEDGED TO BE MARRIED / LUKE 1:26-27

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 1:26-27

And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

PLEDGED TO BE MARRIED / LUKE 1:26-27

The translated phrase come from one Greek word, emnesteumenen (“having been betrothed”). Betrothal was a legal agreement to marry (much stronger than an “engagement”) and was a binding as the actual marriage, and it could only be dissolved by divorce. Sexual abstinence was expected by both parties before and after betrothal. Unfaithfulness during this time was considered adultery and punishable by death according to the law God gave the Israelites through Moses (Deuteronomy 22:23-24). So, when Mary became pregnant, Joeseph, being a good and gentle man, considered a private divorce (Matthew 1:18-21; Matthew 1:21). When the Lord revealed in a dream to Joseph the true nature of Mary’s pregnancy, he then “took Mary home as his wife” (Luke 1:24), but without sexual relation until after Jesu’ birth (Luke 1:25).

SPIRIT AND POWER OF ELIJAH – THE FATHERS TO THEIR CHILDREN / LUKE 1:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 1:17

And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

SPIRIT AND POWER OF ELIJAH – THE FATHERS TO THEIR CHILDREN / LUKE 1:17

SPIRIT AND POWER OF ELIJAH

In many ways, John would be like the fearless Old Testament prophet, Elijah (Malachi 4:5). Because he is filled with (completely directed and empowered by) the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:15), John’s preaching would focus on revealing what is morally and spiritually right by God’s standards (Luke 3:7-14; Matthew 3:1-10). He would challenge people to turn back toward a right relationship with God (Luke 1:16), as he preached about sin (people’s offenses against God and failure to live up to His standard on their own), righteousness (being in a right relationship with God and doing what is right by God’s standards) and judgment (the fact that we are accountable to God for what we do with our lives, John 16:8). He will turn the hearts of “the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous” (Matthew 11:7). He will not compromise what he knows is right or bend the principles of God’s Word for the sake of status, popularity or security (Luke 3:19-20; Matthew 14:1-11). He will obey God and remain loyal to the truth. All of this says that John will be a “man of God” – a worthy example of God’s character, power and purpose.

THE FATHERS TO THEIR CHILDREN

One of the greatest sins of God’s people throughout their history had been the failure of the fathers to love their sons and daughters enough to teach them the ways and commands of God (Malachi 4:6). With the coming of John and the message of Christ, fathers would once again be challenged and inspired to guide their families in a way that honors God and fulfills His purposes.

  1. This is a clear statement that one of the key goals of the gospel – the “good news” about Jesus – is to reestablish God’s purposes for families, primarily through a right relationship between fathers and children. (When that relationship breaks down or is absent, families are prone to difficulty and dysfunction.) By challenging people to humbly return to God and give Him the rightful leadership in their lives, Jon would inspire fathers to recommit themselves to their children in an attitude that is pleasing to God.
  2. If the church today fails to become what God wants it to be, one factor may be a breakdown in family relationships – particularly with fathers abandoning their children – physically, emotionally or spiritually. Though they may deny that they are abandoning or neglecting their children, fathers show a lack of love for their children if they fail to spend time with them or do not teach them God’s Word and standards.
  3. The following are important passages related to fathers and children: (a) teaching children to be faithful to God and His purposes, Exodus 10:2; 13:8; Deuteronomy 4:9-10; 6:6-25; 11:18-21; Psalms 78:5-8; Isaiah 38:19; Joel 1:3; Ephesians 6:4; 1 Thessalonians 2:11. (b) loving, correcting and disciplining children, Psalms 103:13; Proverbs 3:12; 13:24; 23:13-14; Malachi 4:6; Luke 11:11-13: 2 Corinthians 12:14; Ephesians 6:4; Colossians 3:21; 1 Thessalonians 2:11; 1 Timothy 3:4-5, 12; 5:8; Titus 2:4; Hebrews 12:7. (c) Praying for their children, Genesis 17:18; 2 Samuel 12:16; 1 Chronicles 22:11-12; 29:19; Job 1:5; Ephesians 3:14-19; John 17:1.

FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT – WINE … FERMENTED DRINK / LUKE 1:15

(KJV) Luke 1:14-15

For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.

FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT – WINE … FERMENTED DRINK / LUKE 1:15

FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

From the time John was born, God’s Spirit was within him to guide and empower him for God’s service. Notice the results of John’s Spirit-filled life and ministry. Through the power of the Holy Spirit

  • his preaching exposes people’s sins and convinces them to turn back to God (Luke 1:15-14; John 16:8);
  • he preaches in the spirit and power of the prophet Elijah (Luke 1:17; Acts 1:8);
  • he helps restore right relationships in families and leads many people to do what is right by God’s standards (Luke 1:17).

WINE … FERMENTED DRINK

the literal translation of the Greek text here is “He will never drink wine [oinos] or strong drink [sikera].” The work “other” (“other fermented drink”) does not appear in the Greek. The Greek word used for “fermented drink” is sikera. Its exact meaning has not been determined, but it undoubtedly corresponds to the Old Testament word shekar.

DIVISION OF ABIJAH … DESCENDANT OF AARON / LUKE 1:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

    (KJV) Luke 1:5

There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

DIVISION OF ABIJAH … DESCENDANT OF AARON / LUKE 1:5

Both Zechariah and his wife were from the family line of Aaron (Moses’ brother), through whom God had established the priesthood. From the time of King David, the priests were organized into 24 divisions, and Abijah was one of the “heads of the priestly families” (Nehemiah 12:12; 1 Chronicles 24:10).

AN EVIL SPIRIT / LUKE 4:33-35

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

    (KJV) Luke 4:33-35

And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice,

34 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.

35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.

AN EVIL SPIRIT / LUKE 4:33-35

Luke records that one of Jesus’ first acts after announcing His role as the true Messiah (the one fulfills the prophecies about the coming Savior) was a direct confrontation with demonic powers.

    1. Jesus’ primary concerns in ministry was to destroy the devil’s works (1 John 3:8). Believers will not realize or experience the full benefits of God’s kingdom without confronting and gaining the victory over Satan’s kingdom (Matthew 12:28).
    2. One unmistakable sign that God’s people are failing to experience and show evidence of the presence of God’s kingdom is the failure to confront directly the power of evil by setting people free from the slavery to sin and demonic powers. These powers certainly recognize Christ and His authority and must submit to His followers who truly possess Christ’s power because of their deep and uncompromising relationship with Him.
