CARRYING A PARALYTIC / LUKE 5:8

The friends of the paralyzed man had strong faith that Jesus could heal him, as seen by their determination to bring him to Jesus. We too must show the confidence that Christ can meet the needs of those we know by using every opportunity to introduce them to Jesus. If we truly desire to bring others to Christ, God’s Spirit will provide many opportunities to do so. Notice that it was the faith and determination of the friends that led to the man’s spiritual salvation and physical healing.

PRAYERS OF JESUS / LUKE 5:16

And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.

PRAYERS OF JESUS / LUKE 5:16

  1. Luke focuses on the importance of prayer and its power in the life of Jesus more than the other Gospel writers. There is no doubt that Jesus’ time and interaction with His Father was the source of His supernatural guidance and power. When the Holy spirit descended upon Jesus during His baptism in the Jordan River, He was “praying” (Luke 3:21) at times He got away from the multitudes “and prayed” (Luke 5:16), and He “spent the night praying” before choosing the twelve disciples (Luke 6:12). He was “praying in private” before He asked His disciples an important question (Luke 9:18). Prior to His supernatural experience (His “transfiguration”) with Moses and Elijah, He had climbed the mountain “to pray” (Luke 9:28; the actual transfiguration occurred while “He was praying” (Luke 9:29). He also “was praying “when the disciples approached Him about learning how to pray (the Lord’s Prayer, Luke 11:1). In Gethsemane, He “prayed more earnestly” shortly before His arrest (Luke 22:44). As He died on the cross, He prayed for others (Luke 23:34); and the last words He spoke before His death were a prayer (Luke 23:46). Luke also records that Jesus prayed after His resurrection (Luke 24:30).
  2. In examining the life of Jesus in the other Gospels (Matthew, Mark, John), we find that He prayed before extending the invitation, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened” (Matthew 11:25-28). He also prayed before raising Lazarus from the dead (John 11:41-42) and during His last supper with His disciples as He instituted the Lord’s Supper, communion (John 17; Matthew 14:23).

The Bible shows that Jesus prayed constantly. If Jesus, who was Himself God, relied this heavily on prayer with His Father, how much more do we need to follow His example if we expect to receive wisdom, direction and power to overcome evil and accomplish God’s purpose for our lives.

YOU WILL CATCH MEN / LUKE 5:9-10

One point worth considering is that the main characteristic of those whom Jesus chose as His closest disciples seems to be their willingness to put all else aside in order to follow Jesus (Luke 5:27-28). These men were not necessarily more bold, intelligent or spiritual than others; they simply recognized something special about Jesus and responded to Him in faith and without hesitation.

Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

HE WILL BURN UP THE CHAFF / LUKE 3:17

Those who turn from sin and receive Christ and His Word will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. Those who persist in going their own way and holding on to their sins will be punished with “unquenchable fire” (Matthew 10:28). Jesus would later say, I have come to bring fire on the earth” (Luke 12:49). That fire would either purify (those who submit to God) or destroy (those who reject Him). One of the Holy Spirit’s works is to purify lives spiritually (Acts 15:8-9).

BAPTIZE YOU WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / LUKE 3:16

John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

BAPTIZE YOU WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / LUKE 3:16

Christ’s baptizing His followers with or in the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:11) would be a new sign by which to identify God’s people. 

  1. This was promised through prophecy in Joel 2:28 and reaffirmed by Jesus Himself after His resurrection (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4-8). This prediction began to be fulfilled on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:4).
  2. Christ’s ministry of baptizing (immersing, cleansing and empowering) His followers in the Holy Spirit is a continuing ministry throughout this present age. This is made clear by the Greek text of John 1:33 (“he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit”); this phrase uses the present participle (ho baptizon), meaning “he who will continue to baptize.” This means that the references in Luke and John are not only to the first outpouring of the Holy Spirit (when God generously sent His Spirit to fill and empower His followers) during Pentecost, but also to the important ongoing role of Jesus as the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit. “The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off” (Acts 2:39).
  3. The purpose of this baptism is to provide great spiritual power, inspiration and enthusiasm, to live for Christ and spread His message (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8; Luke 3:16).

FRUIT IN KEEPING WITH REPENTANCE / LUKE 3:8

John was addressing the hypocritical religious and social leaders in the crows when he called them a “brood of vipers” (Matthew 3:7). John challenged people to prove their devotion to God through practical acts of kindness, consideration and self-sacrifice (Luke 3:11), which are motivated by a change of attitude (Luke 3:13-15). These good works could not save people, but they were a response to God’s salvation and evidence that they were truly following God.

CAESAR … PILATE … HEROD / LUKE 3:1-2

(KJV) Luke 3:1-2

Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, 2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

CAESAR … PILATE … HEROD / LUKE 3:1-2

Historians often dated events by giving the year of the ruler’s reign in which the event happened. Tiberius was the ruler of the entire Roman world, and the others listed in this passage are subordinate to him in their various territories. After the death of Herod the Great (4 B.C.) – the one who sought to kill Jesus (Matthew 2:13) – his sons (Archelaus, Herod Antipas and Herod Philip), along with Lysanias, were given oversight of the four portions of his divided kingdom. These are the “tetrarchs” (“over a fourth”).

And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

JESUS GREW IN WISDOM / LUKE 2:52

This is all the Bible tells us about Jesus’ teen and young adult years. Between Luke 2:52 and Luke 3:1, approximately eighteen years of Jesus’ life passed. Yet, this brief statement gives us a good overview of Jesus’ overall development. From other passages describing the later years of Jesus’ life, we get a further glimpse of His life. From Matthew 13:55 and Mark 6:3, we learn that He grew up in a large family, that His father was a carpenter, and that Jesus learned the trade. Since Joseph is never mentioned again in the Gospels (the accounts of Jesus’ life according to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John), it is likely that Joseph died before Jesus began His public ministry and that Jesus provided for His mother and younger brothers and sisters. The carpenter’s trade included household repairs, furniture making and constructing tools used for agriculture, such as plows and yokes. During all these years, we are told that He became a very well-rounded individual, developing mentally (wisdom), physically (stature), socially and spiritually (in favor with men and God) – fully conscious that God was His Father (Luke 2:49).

I HAD TO BE IN MY FATHER’S HOUSE / LUKE 2:49-51

And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? 50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. 51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

I HAD TO BE IN MY FATHER’S HOUSE / LUKE 2:49-51

Jesus was not dyeing His parents; this was a time when His higher mission in life took priority over what was convenient. He had come to earth to fulfill His heavenly Father’s purposes; that was His primary duty. Notice how Jesus contrasted “my Father” (God) with Mary’s “Your father” (Luke 2:48). This was not a matter of disrespect because even at age 12 Jesus was aware of His unique relationship to God. Still, He obeyed His parents when they came to take Him home (Luke 2:51).
