WEEPING / LUKE 7:37-38

(KJV) Luke 7:37-38

 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, 38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

WEEPING / LUKE 7:37-38

Because of her love for Jesus, this woman is willing to humble herself and wet His feet with her tears, taking no thought of what others might think of her. A person’s weeping can reveal a range of things. It can be an expression of sorrow and grief, joy and elation, or of grateful love for Christ.

  1. By weeping in prayer and faith, believers can often express to God what is in their hearts, without using words. The Lord values such tears as if they are an offering or act of service to Him (Luke 7:34-50; Psalms 126:5-6; Jeremiah 9:1; 14:17; 31:15-16; Acts 20:19, 31; 2 Corinthians 2:4; Nehemiah 8:9). Tears are sometimes evidence of identifying with Christ as one endures rejection and shares in His sufferings (2 Corinthians 1:5; Philippians 3:10; 1 Peter 4:13).
  2. Christ Himself wept with compassion for spiritually lost people (Luke 19:40-41; John 11:35). The apostle Paul (a pioneer missionary who started many New Testament churches and wrote many of the New Testament letters or “books”) served the Lord with many tears: tears of joy over those who had believed on Christ and tears of grief over those who had not (Acts 20:19; 2 Corinthians 2:4). Even today God’s people who weep are considered blessed and will eventually find joy (Luke 6:21). In Christ’s future eternal kingdom, God will wipe away all tears from the eyes of His people (He will do away with all reasons for sorrow, grief and pain, Revelation 7:17; Revelation 21:4). In contrast to the foolish critics, spiritually wise people could see from the results that the ministries of both Jesus and John were truly godly and complemented each other, despite their somewhat different approaches (John was the one sent to prepare the way for Jesus Luke 7:27).

The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!

GLUTTON AND A DRUNKARD / LUKE 7:34

The Greek word for wine (oinos) in the New Testament was a general word that may be used for all kinds of wine, both unfermented and fermented. (Fermentation is the bio-chemical process by which yeast acts on sugars, breaking them down into alcohol, causing a beverage to become potentially intoxicating.) Jesus’ statement suggests that He drank some types of wine, while John did not. However, it cannot be determined from this passage what types of wine He drank since the Pharisees’ allegations concerning Jesus’ character are clearly false. They accuse Jesus of being a glutton and a drunkard, but these statements were designed to destroy His influence as a teacher of truth (Matthew 12:24; John 7:20; 8:48). The Bible clearly condemns drunkenness (Proverbs 20:1; 23:31; Ephesians 5:18; Romans 13:13; 1 Corinthians 5:11; 6:10; 1 Peter 4:3; Proverbs 23:31).

Though John was in a seemingly hopeless situation that would certainly lead to his death, Jesus sent a reply to keep him from being overcome with discouragement (Luke 7:23). He then went on to praise John’s life and character. (Matthew 11:7).

HIS HEART WENT OUT TO HER / LUKE 7:13

Jesus’ compassion for this widow shows that God has a special love care for widows or for any person who is left alone in the world. Scripture teaches the following:

  1. God is a Father to the fatherless and a defender of widows (Psalms 68:5). They are under His special care and protection (Exodus 22:22-24; Deuteronomy 10:18; Psalms 146:9; Proverbs 15:25).
  2. Through giving God’s tithe (a tenth of one’s income to be reserved for God’s work) and the generosity of His people, God gives us the opportunity to help provide for the fatherless and the widows (Deuteronomy 14:28-29; 24:19-21; 26:12-12). 
  3. God blesses those who help and honor those in need (Isaiah 1:17, 19; Jeremiah 7:6-7; 22:3-4).
  4. God opposes those who take advantage of or hurt widows or orphans (Exodus 22:22-24; Deuteronomy 24:17; 27:19; Job 24:3; Psalms 94:6, 16; Zechariah 7:10).
  5. Widows are recipients of God’s tender love and compassion (Luke 7:11-17; 18;2-8; 21:2-4; Mark 12:42-43). 
  6. The early church made it a priority to care for widows (Acts 6:1-6).
  7. One area of consideration in true faith is to look after orphans and widows in times of difficulty or distress (James 1:27; 1 Timothy 5:3-8).

Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

GIVE / LUKE 6:38

In keeping with the principle of love for others, we must give to those in need (2 Corinthians 8:2). God Himself will measure our giving and in return will give back to us. Though God’s blessing will not always be evident by visible material gain, our rewards from Him will be in proportion to our active concern, generosity and help to others (2 Corinthians 9:6). The illustration of pouring into the lap probably refers to the way an outer garment was worn, leaving a large fold over the belt that could be used as a large pocket to hold an amount of grain.

This is one of the most quoted – but often misunderstood and abused – Bible passages. Ungodly people often refer to this principle to justify their sinful behavior and lifestyles. The fact is that God’s people must constantly use discernment, make wise judgments and accept or reject certain beliefs and behaviors (Proverbs 3:21; John 7:24). However, we must be careful not to draw unjust conclusions about people or attempt to expose their faults while overlooking our own faults. Proper judgments must always be made with grace and humility, realizing that it is God’s place alone to pass final judgment. (Matthew 7:1).

LOVE YOUR ENEMIES / LUKE 6:27

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 6:27

But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,

LOVE YOUR ENEMIES / LUKE 6:27

In Luke 6:27-42, Jesus tells us how we are to conduct ourselves toward others, particularly those who oppose or disagree with us. As believers, we are to accept the responsibility of the requirements He outlines here.

  1. Loving our enemies does not mean an emotional love, such as showing affection for them; this love speaks of having a genuine concern for their good and especially for their eternal spiritual salvation. Since we know the terrible consequences awaiting those who are hostile to God and His people, we must pray for them and attempt to introduce them to Christ (Proverbs 20:22; 24:29; Matthew 5:39-45; Romans 12:17; 1 Thessalonians 5:15; 1 Peter 3:9). One way we can do this is through kind and gracious actions and by repaying good for evil – love for hate.
  2. Loving our enemies does not mean to passively stand by as the wicked continue to defy God. With God’s approval and guidance, we must graciously, humbly, but boldly, take a stand against evil and ungodliness. When it is necessary for God’s honor, for the safety of others or for the highest good of the wicked, extreme action must be taken to stop evil (Mark 11:15; John 2:13-17).

When a large portion of the unbelieving world speaks well of a believer or a professed minister of God, it may be evidence that he or she is not a true follower of Christ. False prophets are often popular with those who are not loyal to Christ. True followers of Christ will encounter opposition just as their Lord did while on earth. Their beliefs, message and lifestyle will stand in sharp contrast to the sins of ungodly people; as a result, they will be ridiculed and rejected by those who do not follow God.
