HIS MESSAGE HAD AUTHORITY / LUKE 4:32

(KJV) Luke 4:32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.

HIS MESSAGE HAD AUTHORITY / LUKE 4:32

The basic meaning of “authority” (Greek exousia) is “the freedom and right to decide or act.” It involves capability and power (Luke 4:36). Jesus had a God-given authority from His Father (John 17:2), which came from knowing the Father and recognizing what the Father was doing in the world. Jesus also gave authority to His followers (Mark 3:15; Luke 9:1). But He did not want them to become lifted up with pride because of their authority, so He warned them not to be like the rulers and officials of the world who “exercise authority” (Matthew 20:25-28) in a way that misuses their power to control others. Jesus used His authority to serve, help, instruct and free people from demonic control (Luke 4:36). This is the example for all believers to follow.

HE HAS ANOINTED ME / LUKE 4:18-19

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 4:18-19 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

HE HAS ANOINTED ME / LUKE 4:18-19

“Anointed” refers to the symbolism of pouring or applying oil over an individual who was being appointed, commissioned, and empowered for spiritual service. The anointing oil was symbolic of the Holy Spirit. Jesus was not anointed with literal oil but with the Spirit Himself. In this passage, Jesus stated the purpose of His Spirit-anointed ministry:

  1. To preach the gospel – the “good news” of forgiveness and spiritual salvation – to the poor, the oppressed, the humble, those crushed in spirit, the brokenhearted and those who “tremble at His Word” (Isaiah 61:1-3; 66:2). Jesus came to reach out to those whom most other people overlook or reject.
  2. To bring freedom to people who are enslaved by their own sin and evil or trapped by the troubles and cruelty of the world. This refers primarily to spiritual freedom, though Christ’s salvation also includes emotional and physical relief from life’s problems and addictions.
  3. To heal those who are blind, bruised, wounded, and oppressed. This healing involves the whole person, both physical and spiritual. Christ is able to open the spiritual eyes of those blinded by the world and Satan so that they might see the truth of God’s good news. (John 9:39).
  4. To proclaim that true freedom from Satan’s power and from sin, fear and guilt is now available (John 8:36; Acts 26:18). When Jesus refers to “the year of the Lord’s favor,” He does not mean a literal calendar year, but a period of time when spiritual salvation is available to all who accept Christ’s message, receive His forgiveness, and give control of their lives to Him.

Jesus’ ministry of preaching and healing was designed to meet every human need. That ministry now continues through Christ’s Spirit-filled followers. Through the power of the Spirit, they are able to recognize and respond to the terrible needs and misery that have resulted from sin and the power of Satan. As a result, they bring hope and help to those who are enslaved to evil, brokenhearted, spiritually blind, and physically distressed.

THE DEVIL / LUKE 4:9

Satan tempted Jesus with pride in regard to the Lord’s identity and authority. It is significant that selfish pride – something God hates (Proverbs 8:13; 16:5) – was the very issue that caused Satan to defy God and lead a rebellion in heaven, leading to his own downfall (Matthew 4:10).

DOES NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE / LUKE 4:4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 4:4

And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

DOES NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE / LUKE 4:4

Satan tempts Jesus’ “flesh,” or physical desires, of which hunger is perhaps the strongest – particularly after such an extended time without food. While it may have seemed reasonable to perform a miracle to eat, Jesus would not be tempted to use His power for selfish reasons. Jesus meets and resists Satan’s temptation by declaring that He will live by God’s Word above all else (Deuteronomy 8:3).

  1. Jesus is saying that everything truly important in life depends on God and His plan and purposes (Joh 4:34). To strive for success, happiness or material things apart from God’s way and material things apart from God’s way and purpose will lead to disappointment and end in failure.
  2. Jesus emphasized this truth when He taught that we must seek God’s kingdom (God’s authority, activity, purposes and power in our lives) above anything and everything else. If we do, God promises to take care of all our needs and give us all other necessary things just the way He intends (Matthew 5:6; 6:33).

Just as there will be degrees of reward in heaven (1 Corinthians 15:41-42), so there will also be degrees of punishment in hell. Those who are eternally lost and condemned spiritually will somehow experience different levels of punishment according to how they handled or disregarded their God-given privileges and responsibilities in life (Matthew 23:14; Hebrews 10:29).

THE POWER OF THE LORD WAS PRESENT / LUKE 5:17

THE POWER OF THE LORD WAS PRESENT / LUKE 5:17

The word translated “power” (Greek dunamis) means “might, power or strength.” In the New Testament, it is most often used of God’s power. The plural, dunameies, is used to describe Jesus’ miracles. The gospel (“good news” and message) of Christ is God’s power for salvation (Romans 1:16). The Holy Spirit gives powerful gifts and ministries in and through Christ’s followers. The power (dunamis) of God is directly related to the ongoing healing ministry of Jesus through His church (Acts 4:33; Acts 5:12-16; 6:8).

(KJV) Luke 19:41

And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,

SAW THE CITY, HE WEPT / LUKE 19:41

Jesus, knowing that the people and their leaders expect a political Savior and will ultimately reject Him as God’s promised Messiah, weeps in pity for the people who will soon suffer terrible judgment. The word “wept” in Greek means more than shedding tears. It suggests deep sorrow, the heavy sobbing of a soul in agony. Jesus, as God, reveals not only His own feelings, but also His Father’s broken heart over the spiritual lostness of the human race and its refusal to turn to God and accept His gift of salvation (Mark 11:9).

THIS WOMAN … SATAN HAS KEPT BOUND / LUKE 13:16

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

THIS WOMAN … SATAN HAS KEPT BOUND / LUKE 13:16

According to Jesus, it is a most serious offense against God when a person refuses to recognize and respond to suffering people (Luke 13:11-14). Jesus teaches that people are imprisoned by sin, sickness and spiritual death and are in distress and great need (Luke 13:11; Luke 13:16; Matthew 4:23; Acts 26:18). Today we are in serious danger of becoming unconcerned and insensitive to the world’s misery and suffering – particularly spiritually. While many people and organizations appear to be more involved than ever in charitable causes and humanitarian efforts, the media continued to pollute the culture with images of immorality and violence as a form of entertainment. As a result, the general society is deceived into thinking that they are all right, but in reality, they are becoming more insensitive and unconcerned about the value of human life and individuals, real needs. True followers of Christ will be like their Master – able to recognize the true threats and distresses of life and to respond with real help for people’s spiritual needs (Luke 10:33-37; Romans 8:22).

HIS HEART / LUKE 6:45

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 6:45
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

HIS HEART / LUKE 6:45

The heart, representing the center of our being and who we really are inside, determines our outward behavior and must be changed or converted in order to conform to God’s standards and purposes (Mark 7:20-23). Without inward change, no one can do God’s will and fulfill His purposes for his or her life (Jeremiah 24:7; 31:33; 32:39; Ezekiel 36:23, 27; Matthew 7:16-20; 12:33-35; 15:18-19; 21:43; Luke 1:17; Romans 6:17). Contrary to the beliefs and opinions of many in the world, humankind is not basically “good at heart.” The Bible is clear that apart from God the heart is wicked and deceitful (Jeremiah 17:9). Since the first humans defied God and sin entered the world – affecting all people – our hearts are not to be trusted if they are not under God’s control.
