THESE DREAMERS / JUDE 1:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jude 1:8

Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities.

THESE DREAMERS / JUDE 1:8

Jude refers to the deceptive teachers as dreamers, either because they claimed to have special revelation from God (1 Peter 1:3, 5) or more likely because their uncontrolled passions had caused them to lose touch with truth and reality.

SODOM AND GOMORRAH / JUDE 1:7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jude 1:7

Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

SODOM AND GOMORRAH / JUDE 1:7

The specific nature of the “sexual immorality and perversion” that led to the supernatural destruction of these ancient cities (Genesis 19:1-29) was homosexuality (Genesis 9:5).

GRACE OF OUR GOD INTO A LICENSE FOR IMMORALITY / JUDE 1:4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jude 1:4

For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

GRACE OF OUR GOD INTO A LICENSE FOR IMMORALITY / JUDE 1:4

Jude strongly denounces “godless men” who teach that spiritual salvation by grace (God’s undeserved favor and love) frees believers from any obligation to religious rules – including the moral standards of God’s law. This led to all kinds of immoral behaviors, which they claimed did not matter, as long as they “believed” the right things. These false teachers claimed the believers could indulge in serious sins without fear of being punished or condemned by God. This perverted teaching likely included the idea that God will freely forgive those who continually engage in sexual lust, or that those who live immorally are still secure in their salvation if they have trusted in Christ at some time in the past (Romans 5:20; 6:1-2). These false teachers preached forgiveness of sin but left out the necessary command of holiness (moral purity, spiritual wholeness, separation from evil and dedication to God; Hebrews 12:14; 1 Peter 1:16).

THE FAITH … ENTRUSTED TO THE SAINTS / JUDE 1:3

(KJV) Jude 1:3

Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

THE FAITH … ENTRUSTED TO THE SAINTS / JUDE 1:3

Those who have devoted themselves to Christ and are determined to remain faithful to Him are under the solemn obligation to “contend for the faith” that God has entrusted to all of Christ’s faithful followers through the message we now have in His written Word (Philippians 1:27; 1 Timothy 1:18-19; 6:12).

  1. “The faith” consists of the gospel – the “good news” of forgiveness and eternal life – proclaimed by Christ and the apostles (those personally authorized and sent by Christ to deliver His original Message and establish the New Testament church). It is the fixed and unchangeable truth, given by the Holy Spirit and embodied in the New Testament. However, “the faith” is more than objective truth (based on a reliable standard outside of any individual – on God Himself). It is also a way of life to be practiced in love and purity (Colossians 1:9-11: 1 Timothy 1:5). It stands for a kingdom that comes in power to baptize (immerse, empower) all true believers in the Holy Spirit so that they may proclaim the message of Jesus Christ to all nations (Mark 16:15-17: 1Thessalonians 1:5) with signs and miracles and gifts of the Spirit (Acts 2:22; 14:3; Romans 15:19; Hebrews 2:4).
  2. The word “contend” (Greek epagonizomai) describes the battle that faithful believers must fight in the defense of the Christian faith. It means literally to “struggle,” “suffer,” “be under great pressure” or “fight a fight.” We must be passionate, earnest and spiritually determined as we rely completely on the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit to help us defend and stand firm for the truth of God’s Word – even though the struggle may be costly and agonizing. We must deny ourselves (Mark 8:34; Luke 9:23) and if need be, accept martyrdom (death for our faith and cause) for the sake of Christ’s message (2 Timothy 4:7).
  3. Contending for the faith means (a) taking a direct stand against those within the church who deny the Bible’s authority or change the original message of truth as presented by Christ and those He personally authorized to deliver His message as we now have it in God’s written Word – the Bible and (b) proclaiming that message to all people as the truth that can restore them to a right relationship with God (John 5:47). Those who claim loyalty to Christ and the full New Testament faith must never allow its message to be weakened or watered down by compromising its authority, changing its truth or explaining away its power and promises.

JUDE & JAMES – MERCY … IN ABUNDANCE / JUDE 1:1-2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jude 1:1-2

Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called: Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied.

JUDE & JAMES – MERCY … IN ABUNDANCE / JUDE 1:1-2

The word translated “be in abundance” (Greek plethuno) literally means “be multiplied.” As we grow deeper in our relationship with God, His mercy, peace and love can be compounded in our lives over and over. That is, these virtues can be doubled, tripled or even quadrupled to us.

THE ANGELS / JUDE 1:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jude 1:6
And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

THE ANGELS / JUDE 1:6

Jude is referring to angels who did not remain in their initial position of authority and service to God. These angels rebelled against God, abandoned their responsibilities, broke His law and became a part of “the devil and his angels” (Matthew 25:41). Some of these angels are now confined and awaiting judgment. However, we must remember that not all fallen angels are locked up because Satan and many demons are on the earth at the present time (2 Peter 2:4, 1 John 5:19).
