I WILL REJOICE IN THE LORD / HABAKKUK 3:18-19

(KJV) Habakkuk 3:18-19

Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. 19 The Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.

I WILL REJOICE IN THE LORD / HABAKKUK 3:18-19

Habakkuk did not serve God because of what God could give him. The prophet’s service was given because he personally knew God – the Sovereign Lord of the universe (with all power, control and authority to do as he desires). For that reason alone, the Lord is worthy of praise and honor. Even though God’s judgment was coming on Judah and they would certainly experience suffering and loss (Habakkuk 3:16), Habakkuk chose to rejoice in the Lord. God would be his Savior and an unfailing source of strength. He also knew beyond a doubt that a portion of God’s faithful people would survive the Babylonian invasion, and he was confident that those who lived by faith in God would finally be victorious (Habakkuk 2:4)

GOD CAME / HABAKKUK 3:3-16

In these verses, Habakkuk refers to the time when God miraculously liberated His people from slavery in Egypt (Exodus 14). The same God who brought freedom and salvation in the past would come again in all His glory. All who were waiting and looking forward to that coming would experience true life. Someday all who have placed their full trust and hope in God will witness His triumph over all empires and all nations.

RENEW THEM IN OUR DAY / HABAKKUK 3:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Habakkuk 3:2

O Lord, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O Lord, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy.

RENEW THEM IN OUR DAY / HABAKKUK 3:2

The prophet knew of God’s great power and had heard accounts of God’s miraculous actions on behalf of His people in the past, and He longed to see such things again. But because of wickedness and rebellion, the people had not experienced God’s presence in a powerful way for quite some time. In fact, they had offended God so greatly that the only display of power they were bound to see any time soon would come in the form of His judgement.  Therefore, Habakkuk made two requests.

  1. He prayed that God would come again and reveal His presence among His people with a fresh display of power. He knew that God’s people would not survive if the Lord did not intervene, or step in, with His generous grace – His Undeserved favor – and the power of His Spirit. Only then could they experience true spiritual life.
  2.  Habakkuk prayed that during the coming times of distress, God would be merciful to his people because without His mercy they would not survive. We too need a continual supply of God’s grace and mercy. As the foundation of the church is being shaken today, and trouble and opposition seem to be everywhere, we need to pray earnestly for a renewed sense of God’s presence and power. Nothing else will bring spiritual revival and renewal to God’s people.

This chapter is a prayer in the form of a song. It is Habakkuk’s response to God’s answer in Habakkuk 2. In the midst of the world’s evil and God’s ultimate justice and judgment, he has learned to live by faith in God and to trust the wisdom of God’s methods and purposes.

WOE TO HIM / HABAKKUK 2:6-20

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Habakkuk%202%3A16&version=NIVThese verses represent a “taunt,” or statement of ridicule, that will be used one day by Babylon’s enemies. So certain is the doom of Babylon that Habakkuk is assured that future victims will be able to say these same words. This two-part taunt breaks down further into a series of five woes (pronouncements of sorrow or consequences for ungodly actions) describing the judgment that would come on all those whose “desires are not upright” (Habakkuk 2:4). Such people will be punished because of their aggression (Habakkuk 2:6-8), injustice (Habakkuk 2:9-11), violence and crime (Habakkuk 2:12-14), immorality (Habakkuk 2:15-17) and idolatry (Habakkuk 2:18-20). All the stolen goods and forced labor that Babylon used to build its empire will finally “cry out” against it (Habakkuk 2:11-12). The Lord will shame Babylon and do to that nation what it did to others (Habakkuk 2:16). The future destruction of this once proud and mighty nation will bring even greater glory and honor to God, whose greater glory and honor to God, whose great power will become known throughout the world (Habakkuk 2:15).

THE RIGHTEOUS WILL LIVE BY HIS FAITH / HABAKKUK 2:4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Habakkuk 2:4

Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.

THE RIGHTEOUS WILL LIVE BY HIS FAITH / HABAKKUK 2:4

In light of God’s revelation about how (and when) He is working, His people are to be patient and live by faith.

  1. It is “the righteous” – those who entrust their lives to God and do what is right according to His standards – who will come through victorious in the end.
  2. The righteous are contrasted with the proud and the ungodly, whose life choices and direction oppose God. The hearts of the righteous are devoted to God; they want to be His children, to have close fellowship with Him and to obey His plans and desires.
  3. The righteous must rely on God to accomplish His purposes for them in this world. This kind of “faith” implies an active and lasting trust in God. It is evidence of a personal loyalty to Him as Savior and Lord (The Leader and authority over their lives) and a moral commitment to follow His plans.

This phrase, “the righteous will live by his faith,” or a form of it, is used throughout the New Testament to support the teaching that people are saved by grace (God’s undeserved favor) through faith in Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9). Paul develops the theme in Romans 1:17 and Galatians 3:11, and the writer to the Hebrews emphasizes that God’s people must continue to live by faith in order to please God (Hebrews 10:38; 11:6).

AWAITS AN APPOINTED TIME / HABAKKUK 2:3

(KJV) Habakkuk 2:3

For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.

AWAITS AN APPOINTED TIME / HABAKKUK 2:3

The final solution to Habakkuk’s dilemma would come only in the future, at God’s “appointed time.”

  1. Though the time was well in the future (539 B.C., about 66 years after Habakkuk’s prophecy), Babylon would suffer its own punishment.
  2. There will come a time when all evil in the world will be put to an end – destroyed completely. God’s faithful people must “wait for it,” even though it may seem to take a very long time. In the last days, Christ will take His church (His faithful followers) from the earth and then execute (carry out) His judgment on the world (1Thessalonians 4:16-17).

The time will come when Christ will return to earth to destroy all evil and establish a kingdom of truth, justice and righteousness that will close out history and usher in God’s eternal kingdom (Revelation 20-21).

WRITE DOWN THE REVELATION / HABAKKUK 2:2-20

In Habakkuk 2 God gave Habakkuk an answer to His questions about why evil seemed to dominate (control) the world and if it could be allowed to wipe out those who do what is good and right. The Lord revealed that a time was coming when all the wicked would be destroyed and the only people not shaken would be those who trust God and do what is right by His standards. Such people are related, or connected, to God by their faith (Habakkuk 2:4).

YOUR EYES ARE TOO PURE / HABAKKUK 1:13

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Habakkuk 1:13

Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he?

YOUR EYES ARE TOO PURE / HABAKKUK 1:13

This verse does not mean that God overlooks evil; after all, He is omniscient (“all-knowing”) and sees everything. The fact that He realizes everything that is going on, however, does not mean that God approves of evil. What confused Habakkuk was this: God’s use of the wicked Babylonians made it seem like He was tolerating their sin while punishing Judah; and even though Judah was behaving wickedly, it was still not as corrupt as Babylon.

ARE YOU NOT FROM EVERLASTING? / Habakkuk 1:12

Habakkuk was appalled that God would use such a cruel and defiant nation to attack Judah. Babylon was so arrogant about its military might that it was almost like a god to them (Habakkuk 1:11). Yet the prophet was confident that God would not allow them to totally destroy his own people. Such a destructive plan would work against God’s purpose to use Israel to reveal His plan of salvation to the entire human race.
