NOT GIVE IN TO THEM FOR A MOMENT / GALATIAN 2:5

Paul was gentle, tolerant and patient toward many things (1 Corinthians 13:4-7), but he was firm and completely unbending when it came to the “truth of the gospel.” The revelation that he received directly from Christ (Galatians 1:12) is the one and only message that possesses the power to save all who believe, receive and respond to it (Romans 1:16). Paul understood that this gospel (“good news”; Mark 14:9) must never be compromised for the sake of peace, unity or current opinion. Both the honor of Jesus Christ and the salvation of those who are spiritually lost (who have not received God’s forgiveness and a personal relationship with Christ) were at stake. If we neglect or abandon any part of the gospel according to New Testament revelation, we begin to tear down the only message that can save us from eternal destruction (Matthew 18:6).

FALSE BROTHERS / GALATIANS 2:4

And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:

FALSE BROTHERS / GALATIANS 2:4

These were Judaizers, those who strictly obeyed the rules of Judaism (Jewish religion, customs and culture). They claimed that non-Jews needed to follow the Old Testament law of Moses (Acts 15:5; 2 Corinthians 11:26), particularly the regulation of circumcision (Galatians 2:12; Romans 2:29; Philippians 3:2; Acts 15:11), in order to be saved and in right relationship with God (Romans 2:29) This philosophy is also referred to as legalism. Legalism involves relying on religious regulations, routines and personal works to bring spiritual salvation or gain favor with God. It involves following the details of the law without a true commitment to the spirit and purposes behind the law (Acts 25:8). While God’s law is good and spiritual (Romans 7:12-14) and its moral standards and principles still apply to the Christian life, simply following the law cannot save us. The purpose of God’s law is to reveal our own inability to live by God’s perfect standard and to point us to our need for Christ (Galatians 3:24). When a person by faith receives God’s forgiveness and yields his or her life to Christ’s leadership, the Holy Spirit then enables him or her to live by God’s standards (Romans 8:4). The person lives the transformed life, however, out of love and gratitude to God, not as a means of gaining His favor. Many Judaizers were not even sincere in their own devotion to the law but simply wanted to force their influence upon other people in the church and distract them from true faith in Christ (Galatians 4:17).

WOE TO YOU / LUKE 11:42

See Matthew 23:13 on Christ confronting and condemning the sins of the Pharisees. Notice also that Jesus is not criticizing the practice of tithing (giving ten percent of one’s income to God); He is saying that they should have done that in addition to practicing real love and justice.

YOUR EYE IS THE LAMP OF YOUR BODY / LUKE 11:34

(KJV) Luke 11:34

The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.

YOUR EYE IS THE LAMP OF YOUR BODY / LUKE 11:34

The eye is the body’s gateway to light and images – Physically and even spiritually. If the eye is healthy, then a person can fully receive and use light and determine clearly what an image truly is. But if a person’s eyes are blinded or weakened, then darkness will change or twist what lies before them and affect what they can do. This passage has both literal and symbolic implications.

  1. We must be careful what we choose to view and take into our lives through our eyes. Our physical and spiritual eyes take in only what we expose ourselves to. If images and ideas are ungodly and evil, they will cloud and corrupt our minds spiritually and keep us from following God and His plans.
  2. When people’s spiritual eyes (their attitudes, motives and desires) are directed toward God and His purposes, then the light of His Word enters their hearts to produce the blessings, benefits, character traits and outward evidence of spiritual salvation and devotion to God (Galatians 5:22-23). But if their desires are not focused on the things of God, then God’s revelation and truth are hidden. 
  3. We must continually examine our lives to make sure that our spiritual eyes are open and clear from sin so that God’s Word can purify, renew and transform our lives inwardly and outwardly. Do we respond to the teaching or reading of God’s Word with a spirit that reflects true love for Him, a deepening hunger for His Word and the desire to serve His purposes? Or, in spite of all the godly messages and Bible teaching we have received, is there a spiritual dryness and deadness in our souls that keeps us troubled and enslaved to sin? If so, we should confess our sins, open our hearts to God, turn from our own way and begin following God’s light and purposes again. With our spiritual eyes opened, we will see that there is no room for compromise.

SEVEN OTHER SPIRITS … LIVE THERE / LUKE 11:26

(KJV) Luke 11:26

Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.

SEVEN OTHER SPIRITS … LIVE THERE / LUKE 11:26

The point of this passage is made clearer in its parallel account found in Matthew 12:43-45. The passage in Matthew speaks of the house (a life) that is swept clean but left unoccupied (spiritually). A life that seems to be spiritually changed and renewed but lacks God’s presence (does not have a personal relationship with Jesus) is wide open to being influenced and “reoccupied” by evil. Even those who have truly received Christ must be cautious in their spiritual lives – although an evil spirit cannot possess them while God’s Spirit lives in them. 

  1. People who accept Christ’s forgiveness and are spiritually “born again” (John 3:3) must also commit themselves to obedience, prayer, the standards of God’s Word and continually being filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4; Romans 8).
  2. Just because a person has accepted Christ and entered a relationship with God does not mean that Satan will no longer attempt to influence him or her for evil purposes (Luke 22:31; Matthew 6:13). People are safe from sin and Satan only by full devotion to Christ and by using all the means of help and resistance God makes available through faith in Christ (Ephesians 6:11).
  3. Believers who have been freed from demonic powers but have still not completely renounced sin or opened their lives to the power and purpose of God’s Spirit are inviting the evil spirits to come back against them with renewed force.

WHO IS NOT WITH ME IS AGAINST ME / LUKE 11:23

It is impossible to remain neutral in the spiritual conflict between Christ’s kingdom and the powers of evil.

  1. Those who do not join with Christ in opposing Satan and evil have in reality set themselves against Jesus Christ and God’s purposes on earth. Every person is fighting either on the side of Christ and truth, or on the side of Satan and the ungodly.
  2. Jesus’ words condemn any attempt to be neutral in this spiritual war or to compromise with ungodliness. Halfhearted commitments and partial obedience are unacceptable to God.

DEMONS … THE KINGDOM OF GOD / LUKE 11:20

This passage reveals three things:

  1. The success of God’s kingdom on earth – working through believers – is directly related to the destruction of Satan and the freeing of people from slavery to sin and demonic influence. 
  2. Satan will strongly resist Christ’s kingdom on earth (Luke 11:24-26; Matthew 13:18-30; Revelation 12:12).
  3. Jesus shows God’s power and authority over Satan and his demonic forces by overpowering them and reclaiming lives for God’s honor (Luke 11:20-22).

 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

GIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT TO THOSE WHO ASK / LUKE 11:13

Because all who accept Christ and enter a relationship with God automatically receive the presence of the Holy Spirit to live in them (Romans 8:9-10; 1 Corinthians 6:19-20), this verse is probably not speaking of the first experience with the Holy Spirit at the time of salvation. Rather, the verse most likely refers to the baptism in the Holy Spirit that Christ promised to His followers.

OUR DAILY BREAD / LUKE 11:3

God’s people should learn to pray for life’s necessary provisions (Matthew 6:11) based on four principles.

  1. We must make such requests according to God’s plans, desires and character with the purpose of honoring Him (Matthew 6:10; Matthew 6:33; 1 Corinthians 10:31; 1 John 5:14-15).
  2. We must desire and allow God to show His fatherly love for us (Matthew 6:9; Matthew 6:25-34).
  3. The things we pray for must supply our basic needs and give us the ability to serve Christ more effectively (2 Corinthians 9:8; 1 Timothy 6:8; Hebrews 13:5). 
  4. We may ask for things only as we are faithful to give to God and to others (2 Corinthians 9:6; 8:2).
