And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

THOSE WHO HAVE DONE GOOD – RISE TO LIVE – THOSE WHO HAVE DONE EVIL / JOHN 5:29

THOSE WHO HAVE DONE GOOD

According to God’s Word, judgment is based on actions and conduct. That is because one’s actions over time represent his or her true beliefs, attitudes and inner spiritual condition. This means that we will be judged not by our claims to believe or have faith in Christ, but by how we have lived in response to Christ and our faith in Him (Matthew 12:36-37: 16:27; Romans 2:6-10; 14:12; 1 Corinthians 3:13-15; 2 Corinthians 5:10; Ephesians 6:8; Colossians 3:25; Revelation 2:23; Revelation 20:11-13; Revelation 22:12). This does not mean that our good works are what save us, but our actions will show our faith and be a natural outflow of our relationship with Jesus (Ephesians 2:10; Titus 2:14; 3:8-9) – or condemned by refusing to trust and surrender to Christ – but we will be judged and rewarded according to our actions (Ephesians 6:8; 1 Peter 1:17; Revelation 20:11-13).

RISE TO LIVE

The New Testament does not teach that there is a single, simultaneous (occuring at the same time) resurrection for all the dead. 

  1. It speaks of a resurrection of many “holy people” occurring immediately after Jesus’ resurrection (Matthew 27:52-53), of a resurrection occurring at the time of the rupture or “catching up” of the church by Christ (1 Corinthians 15:51-52), of a resurrection occurring one thousand years after the “first resurrection” of Revelation 20:6 (after the millennial reign of Christ on earth, Revelation 20:4).
  2. It is possible that “the first resurrection” includes the resurrection of all Christ’s people following His return to earth to defeat the forces of the antichrist and before He begins His thousand-year reign on earth (Revelation 20:4-6). In this case, the resurrection of Revelation 20:4-6 would complete the first resurrection.

THOSE WHO HAVE DONE EVIL

Immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, corruption, deceit and other sinful behaviors have no place in the lives of Christ’s followers (Colossians 3:5). People are defying the teachings of Christ and promoting deception if they teach that those who “believe” in Christ will still receive eternal life even though they live outside the boundaries set in God’s Word. This belief leads to a false sense of “eternal security” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Galatians 5:19-21: Ephesians 5:5; Ephesians 5:6). While nothing else can remove us from God’s love or take us out of His hands (John 10:28; Romans 8:31-35), we can remove ourselves from eternal life and His care by choosing to disobey and defy His Word. We must pay attention to the words of Jesus: “those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.”

HEARS … BELIEVES – WILL NOT BE CONDEMNED / JOHN 5:24

(KJV) John 5:24

 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

HEARS … BELIEVES – WILL NOT BE CONDEMNED / JOHN 5:24

HEARS … BELIEVES

Jesus describes those who have eternal life (who have a personal relationship with God and will live with Him forever) and who will not be condemned as “whoever hears … and believers.” The verbs “hears” Greek akouon, from akouo) and “believes” (Greek pisteouoon, from pisteuoo) are present participles, which show ongoing action (“whoever is, or keeps on, hearing and believing”). This means that the “hearing” and “believing” are not acts of a single moment, but actions that must continue (John 1:12). To “hear” in Biblical terms suggests listening and responding; it means putting into practice what you learn. Christ affirms that having eternal life is conditional on a living and growing faith rather than on a momentary decision at some point in the past (John 1:12; John 4:14).

WILL NOT BE CONDEMNED

 “Condemned” (Greak krisis) is used in the sense of being headed for eternal spiritual death. Christ’s followers will not be condemned with the rest of the world (1 Corinthians 11:32). However, they will still be held accountable for their actions and judged according to their faithfulness with the opportunities and resources God gave them while on earth.

MAKING HIMSELF EQUAL WITH GOD / JOHN 5:18-24

MAKING HIMSELF EQUAL WITH GOD / JOHN 5:18-24

Jesus makes several astounding claims here:

  1. God is His Father in a unique way.
  2. He maintains unity, communication and authority with God (John 5:19-20).
  3. He has the power to give life and raise the dead (John 5:21).
  4. He has the right to judge all people (John 5:22).
  5. He has the equal right to divine honor (the kind of respect only God deserves, John 5:23).
  6. He has the power to give eternal life (John 5:24).

But with all of this, notice how Jesus describes His complete dependence on His Father (John 5:19; 8:28). If Jesus, who was Himself God, had to depend on the Father, how much more do we need to rely on Him and spend time with Him – through prayer and God’s Word – so we can find guidance and spiritual strength.

PERSECUTED HIM / JOHN 5:16

At this point in his Gospel (his account of Jesus’s life and message), John begins to show that although Jesus performs miracles – and even because of them – the religious leaders strongly opposed Him. A large part of Jesus’ ministry, particularly toward the end of His ministry, involved many encounters with opposition.

STOP SINNING / JOHN 5:14

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 5:14

Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

STOP SINNING / JOHN 5:14

Jesus demands that all who claim to believe in and follow Him must stop sinning. Those who are truly saved and who totally rely on Christ will stop habitual sinning – not simply of their own willpower, but in the power of God’s Spirit within them. This does not mean that if we follow Jesus we will never sin, but we will not continue down the same path of continual sin or keep defying God in the same ways over and over. True believers will commit their lives to Christ so that, through the power of the Holy Spirit, sin will no longer characterize, define or control their lives (1 Peter 1:5; 1 John 3:6 1 John 3:9). Jesus’ expectation for those who are born again (John 3:3-7) contrasts sharply with those who say that believers cannot help but sin daily in thoughts, words and actions. This verse does not suggest that when bad things happen in our lives it is necessarily a direct result of our own sin. However, it is certainly possible to bring trouble on ourselves if we defy God’s commands, principles and desires.

THE MAN WAS CURED / JOHN 5:9

And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath. 10 The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.

THE MAN WAS CURED / JOHN 5:9

Jesus often healed as a direct response to the faith of individuals. In this case, however, He required no faith at all; the man was cured merely by Jesus’ words. Even today people may be healed according to God’s purpose even apart from a specific act of faith in Christ. The Bible teaches that there are three points of contact for healing faith:

  1. The faith of the one being healed (Matthew 9:27-29).
  2. The faith of others on behalf of the one who needs healing (Matthew 8:5-10; 17:15-20; James 5:14-16).
  3. The faith of one who is empowered to deliver gifts of healing (1 Corinthians 12:9).

Having suffered for thirty-eight years, this man had experienced lingering disappointment at not being healed, while repeatedly looking to God in expectation. Yet healing finally came. Jesus, moved with compassion for this man who has suffered for so very long, chose to help him. While you may not understand why relief or a miracle does not come, never give up hope that God’s time to work a miracle in your life may come soon.

While Christ sets His followers free from the system of religion that depends only on obedience to certain rules (with no response from the heart), Christians are still accountable to follow Christ’s commands and the moral standards and principles of God’s laws (Romans 8:4). This means that individual Christians must never use their freedom to satisfy sinful desires or practice questionable behaviors. In addition, they must not be selfishly proud about their freedom so that they find excuse to offend other sincere believers or mislead those who may be looking to them for a godly example (Romans 6:17; 13:10; 14:17; 1 Corinthians 8 – 9).

KEPT YOU FROM OBEYING THE TRUTH / GALATIANS 5:7

False teaching in the church usually takes one of two forms. Either it denies the foundational truths of the Christian faith (Galatians 1:9), or it claims that something in addition to what is found in the New Testament is required for a believer to be a complete Christian (Galatians 1:6-7; Galatians 2:15-16; Galatians 5:2; Galatians 5:6).

  1. All Christian teaching must be evaluated by how it measures up to and conforms to the original message of Christ and the apostles (Acts 14:4) as found in the New Testament (Galatians 1:11-12; 2:1-2, 7-9; Ephesians 2:20). We must ask: Does a teaching contain less than the Biblical message (is something missing)? Does it claim to support Biblical truth, yet add something unbiblical to the original message?
  2. We must never evaluate or accept teaching based only on feelings, experience, results, miracles or by what other people are saying. The New Testament is the highest standard for truth.
  3. We must beware of any teaching that says God’s Word as revealed in the Bible is no longer sufficient and that the church needs additional revelation based on modern scholarship, science, philosophy, psychology or new spiritual insight in order to reach its full potential. Only Biblical truth can bring true salvation and spiritual maturity.

FAITH EXPRESSING ITSELF THROUGH LOVE / GALATIANS 5:6

(KJV) Galatians 5:6

For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.

FAITH EXPRESSING ITSELF THROUGH LOVE / GALATIANS 5:6

The Bible declares that a person is saved through faith (Galatians 2:15-16; Romans 3:22; Ephesians 2:8-9). 

  1. In this passage, Paul defines the exact nature of that faith. Saving faith is a living faith in a living Savior. It is not just an intellectual belief, but an active trust that surrenders control of one’s life to Christ’s leadership and continues to follow Him in obedience. It is so alive that it cannot avoid expressing itself in love-motivated actions. 
  2. Faith that does not truly love and obey Christ (1 John 2:3; 1 John 5:3), show a real concern for the work of God’s kingdom (Matthew 12:28) and actively resist sin and worldly influence (Galatians 5:16-17) is not saving faith (James 2:14-16).
