GREATER THINGS / JOHN 14:12

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 14:12

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

GREATER THINGS / JOHN 14:12

It is Jesus’ desire that His followers continue to do the works that He did.

  1. The “greater things” include spreading His message, leading people to faith in Christ and performing miracles as Jesus did. This is shown throughout the book of Acts (Acts 2:41, 43; 4:33; 5:12) and in Jesus’ declaration in Mark 16:17-18). Through Jesus’ followers, an even greater number of people would come to Christ and receive new life, healing and supernatural help.
  2. The “greater things” would not happen because of the disciples’ own efforts or spirituality. Their work would still be Jesus’ work, done only in the power of the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus would send once He returned to His Father (John 14:16; 16:7; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:24). Jesus’ followers could then pray in His name (John 14:13-14), and God would respond in powerful ways through His Spirit. As a result, the disciples’ works will be “greater” in number and scope, as Christ’s message and power continue to reach people throughout the world.

I AM THE WAY AND THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE / JOHN 14:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 14:6

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

I AM THE WAY AND THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE / JOHN 14:6

This is another one of Jesus’ seven “I am” statements recorded by John (John 6:35).

  1. Jesus is “the Way” – He is not simply one among many ways; He is the only way to God the Father (Acts 4:12; Hebrews 10:19-20). No one other than God’s perfect Son could have paid the full price for our offenses against God and opened the way for a renewed relationship with Him. In the early days of the church, Christianity was sometimes referred to as “the Way” (Acts 9:2, 23; 24:14, 22). This is because they recognized that Jesus provided the only way out of a life of spiritual darkness (1 Peter 2:9), lostness (Luke 19:10) and slavery to sin (Romans 6:6), guilt (Hebrews 10:22) and condemnation (Romans 8:1). In doing so, He provided the only way for us to find our highest purpose and fulfillment in life and to receive eternal reward in heaven (John 14:2-3). It has never been popular – certainly not today – to claim that there is only one way to God, but that is the reality according to Jesus’ own words. There is no other way to have a relationship with the true God except through faith in Jesus Christ.
  2. Jesus is “the truth” not just part of the truth, but the whole truth. As a living Word (John 1:1-3), everything about Christ and His message is true. And His truth is absolute (total, definite, unconditional, unchanging, conclusive) and universal (true for all people in all situations for all time). The fact that supreme truth is revealed through Christ is a key theme in John’s Gospel (John 1:17).
  3. Jesus is “the life” – true and lasting spiritual life is available only through His life, death and resurrection (John 11:25-26). His perfect life provided the only permanent and enduring sacrifice for our sin against God. Those who accept His life and sacrifice for themselves – willingly yielding their lives to His leadership – receive forgiveness of sins and eternal life with Christ (John 3:14-15; John 3:16; John 3:36; John 5:18-24; John 6:40; John 6:47; John 6:54; John 10:28; 17:2-3).

I WILL COME BACK / JOHN 14:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 14:3

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

I WILL COME BACK / JOHN 14:3

As surely as Christ went to heaven, He will return to take His followers to the place prepared for them (John 14:2; 17:24). This was the hope of New Testament Christians, and it is the hope of all Christians today.

  1. The ultimate purpose of the Lord’s return is that His faithful people may be with Him forever.
  2. The words “take you to be with Me” refer to the rapture, when all followers of Christ (those who are still alive at that time as well as those who have already died) “will be caught up together … in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so, we will be with the Lord forever” (1 Thessalonians 4:17). This will take place suddenly and at an unexpected time (Matthew 24:14; Matthew 24:30; Matthew 24:37; Matthew 24:42; Matthew 24:43; Matthew 24:44).
  3. Christ’s coming for His faithful followers will enable them to escape the future “hour of trial” and judgment that will come on the world in the end times (Luke 21:36; 1 Thessalonians 1:10; 1 Thessalonians 5:9; Revelation 3:10).
  4. The expectation of this glorious and eternal reunion should be a comfort to all who desire to “be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words” (1 Thessalonians 4:17; 1 Thessalonians 4:18).

MY FATHER’S HOUSE / JOHN 14:1-4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 14:1-4

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

MY FATHER’S HOUSE / JOHN 14:1-4

This phrase clearly refers to heaven, the place to which Jesus was returning to prepare a place for His followers (Matthew 6:9; Psalms 33:13-14; Isaiah 63:15). God’s eternal home has many “rooms” (implying permanent “dwelling places”). Members of “God’s household” now on earth (Ephesians 2:19) will one day transfer to their eternal home with God. “For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come” (Hebrews 13:14).

GOD WILL DESTROY HIM / 1 CORINTHIANS 3:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 3:17

If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

GOD WILL DESTROY HIM / 1 CORINTHIANS 3:17

Here Paul presents one of the strongest warnings in the New Testament to anyone responsible for building or developing Christ’s church. The passage is especially relevant for those in teaching and leadership positions. If anyone defiles or corrupts God’s temple (a local congregation or a group of congregations), God Himself will punish that individual with terrible ruin and eternal death. Negligent servants corrupt and destroy Christ’s church by:

  1. Engaging in immoral behaviors and lifestyles (1 Corinthians 5:1).
  2. Promoting lies, deceptions and selfish ambition (1 Corinthians 3:3; Acts 5:1-11).
  3. Promoting false teaching, rejecting God’s original revelation and disregarding the truth of His Word (1 Timothy 4:1; Jude 1:4).
  4. Tolerating sin and worldliness among those who claim to follow Christ (1 Corinthians 5:1-2, 5-7; Revelation 3:17-18).
  5. Attempting to build a church by worldly wisdom, human standards or messages that are not the true “gospel” (1 Corinthians 1:18-2:5; Philippians 1:15-16).

YOU YOURSELVES ARE GOD’S TEMPLE / 1 CORINTHIANS 3:16

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 3:16

Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

YOU YOURSELVES ARE GOD’S TEMPLE / 1 CORINTHIANS 3:16

The emphasis here is on the entire church congregation, or local community of Christians. The Bible also refers to individual Christians (their bodies) as temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19); but here the reference is to the entire church body as the dwelling place of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:9; 2 Corinthians 6:16; Ephesians 2:21). As God’s temple in the middle of a corrupt society, God’s people in Corinth were not to participate in the evil and ungodly practices so often embraced in that society. They were to reject all forms of ungodly and immoral belief and behaviors. God’s temple must be holy (1 Corinthians 3:17) – morally pure, spiritually whole, separated from evil and dedicated completely to God – because God is holy (1 Peter 1:14-16).

HE WILL SUFFER LOSS – BUT ONLY AS ONE ESCAPING THROUGH THE FLAMES / 1 CORINTHIANS 3:15

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 3:15

If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

HE WILL SUFFER LOSS – BUT ONLY AS ONE ESCAPING THROUGH THE FLAMES / 1 CORINTHIANS 3:15

HE WILL SUFFER LOSS

All of God’s people must be faithful and careful in their efforts to serve Christ and fulfill His purposes for their lives (1 Corinthians 3:10). This is especially so when handling God’s Word. That is because one day the quality of each person’s service will be put to the test, and their “work will be shown for what it is” (1 Corinthians 3:13). The Bible assures us that all who have accepted God’s forgiveness and have a personal relationship with Christ are free from God’s condemning judgment (eternal punishment and separation from God, John 5:24; Romans 8:1; Hebrews 10:14-17). However, there is still a future judgment for God’s people (1 John 4:17) based on the degree of their faithfulness to God and the opportunities given to them during their life on earth (1 Corinthians 3:10; 4:2-5; 2 Corinthians 5:10). In that judgment, there is the possibility that a believer, although spiritually saved, may experience great loss (Greek zemioo, meaning “to suffer loss or damage”).

The careless Christian is in danger of experiencing loss or damage through:

  1. A feeling of shame at Christ’s coming (2 Timothy 2:15; 1 John 2:28).
  2. Loss of his or her life’s work for God (1 Corinthians 3:12-15).
  3. Loss of glory and honor from God (Romans 2:7).
  4. Loss of opportunity for service and authority in heaven (Matthew 25:14-30).
  5. A low position in heaven (Matthew 5:19; Matthew 19:30).
  6. Loss of rewards (1 Corinthians 3:14-15).
  7. Repayment for the wrong done to others (Colossians 3:24-25). These passages should impress on us the need for complete dedication and self-sacrificing service to our Lord. (Romans 12:1-2; Philippians 2:12; Philippians 4:3).

BUT ONLY AS ONE ESCAPING THROUGH THE FLAMES

“Escaping through the flames” is probably an expression meaning “by a narrow escape” or “barely saved.” God will evaluate for each person the quality of his or her life, service, influence, teaching and work for His kingdom (1 Corinthians 3:13) – especially of each minister. If a person’s work is judged as lacking or unworthy, he or she will lose some degree of reward, yet will still be saved and enter heaven. Notice that this passage does not teach a doctrine of purgatory (the belief that there is a place where souls remain until amends have been made for their sins and they can enter heaven). Paul is speaking of a judgment of works rather than the cleansing of a person from sins that would lead him or her to eternal punishment and separation from God.

ONE PURPOSE / 1 CORINTHIANS 3:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 3:8

The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor.

ONE PURPOSE / 1 CORINTHIANS 3:8

Each of God’s people fills a different role that is equally valid and significant in His overall purpose. One Christian may be the first to deliver God’s message to a certain individual. Another believer may come along later and encourage that person by words or example to further consider God’s truth, or perhaps to grow in a relationship with Christ. In some cases, Christians may pray for years for family members who do not know Christ, then another believer has the privilege of praying with that person to receive Christ. But all of these efforts are aimed at the same purpose, and it is God who finally brings people into a relationship with Himself and develops them into what He wants them to be (1 Corinthians 3:7). For this reason, all who serve Christ must take comfort in the fact that whether they see the effects of their service for Christ immediately or not, they are expected simply to be faithful to the tasks and opportunities God has given them (1 Corinthians 4:2; Matthew 25:21, 23). They are not responsible for causing the spiritual results in people’s lives. At the same time, those who serve Christ must never become puffed up with pride over the results or success of their ministry – all of it is a credit to God alone. In this word picture, God’s people are pictured as His farm and His building (1 Corinthians 3:9) where Paul, Apollos and all other servants of God work together for Him.

YOU ARE STILL WORLDLY / 1 CORINTHIANS 3:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 3:3

You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans?

YOU ARE STILL WORLDLY / 1 CORINTHIANS 3:3

Among the greatest evidence of immaturity and worldliness among believers are disunity and the strong desire to idolize and follow human personalities rather than Christ.

HOW TO BEGIN READING THE BIBLE USING THE S.O.A.P. BIBLE STUDY METHOD

Have you tried MANY different methods of Bible study over the years only to find they didn’t work well for you? There seems to be one for every level of experience, and that is always a great thing! But the SOAP Bible Study Method is one of my favorites because of its simplicity while, at the same time, allowing one to take Bible study as far as they want to go with it.

It allows you to draw from scripture what the Lord wants to show you personally, and not just what someone else experienced. You are not limited in this method and can continue to use it as you grow in your walk and in as you grow in your study of the Word.

So why the SOAP Bible Study Method? What is it exactly?

The SOAP Bible Study stands for:

S – Scripture

O- Observation

A- Application

P- Prayer

For individuals seeking an effective approach to Bible study, the S.O.A.P. Bible Study Method provides a systematic framework for engaging with scripture.

Many readers can find the prospect of studying the Bible daunting due to its complexity and depth. It is common to lose motivation or become overwhelmed when attempting to read the Bible from start to finish. However, it is important to recognize that the Bible is not a single book, but rather a collection of works—books, songs, and poetry—all inspired to communicate enduring messages of love and faith. As such, it is most productively studied in manageable sections.

What is the S.O.A.P. Bible Study Method?

The S.O.A.P. method stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. This approach can be integrated into any existing study plan, and encourages reflective journaling based on verses that resonate personally.

Below is an overview of each step in the S.O.A.P. Bible Study Method:

Scripture

Begin by reading the selected passage, either aloud or using a different translation for enhanced understanding. Clarify its origin: Is the text from the Old or New Testament, and what genre does it represent (historical, narrative, prophetic, poetry, letter)? Identify the author and audience, as well as the time period in which it was written—introductory sections in many Bibles or reputable online resources may assist. Writing out the passage helps facilitate detailed attention to its content and meaning.

Observation

This step requires careful analysis of the passage—highlight key words, note instructions or themes, and answer questions like: Who is speaking? What is the context? How was it understood then? What attributes of God are shown? Are there examples or warnings for today? Identify promises or praiseworthy elements.

Application

Apply the insights gained to your current circumstances. Reflect on how the passage is relevant to your life, whether through encouragement, instruction, command, or prompting positive change. Remain attentive to guidance on areas for personal growth and ways to benefit others by emulating faithful individuals described in scripture. Consistent engagement with this step facilitates ongoing transformation and alignment with spiritual principles.

Prayer

Conclude by praying for support in implementing changes prompted by the scripture. Seek strength for personal growth and transformation, offer praise for God’s character and actions, and confess any unaddressed shortcomings. Request assistance for challenges in your life, pray for the needs of others—including friends, family, and leaders—and ask for guidance in consistently applying biblical teachings.

The S.O.A.P. Bible Study Method offers a practical, organized pathway for developing a deeper understanding of scripture and integrating its lessons into daily life.

Tips when using the Bible Study

In the SOAP Bible study method, prayer is how you close your time with God. However, I want to encourage you to open with prayer, as well. Whenever I open the Word of God, I pray that His Holy Spirit will illuminate and guide my time in Bible Study. Pray for wisdom – He promises to give wisdom abundantly when we as (James 1:5).

Choose to move through a specific book of the Bible with this soap bible study method, rather than skipping around. The Bible already breaks up chapters into sections/paragraphs. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Follow the natural breaks in each chapter.

The more consistently you practice this, the more natural it becomes to recognize the ways God desires you to grow and change.

Prayer

  • Ask God to help you put into action the changes He is prompting in your daily life. Pray for the strength and power to follow through, and that He would use the scripture to transform you to be more like Jesus.
  • Praise God for His character and all He has done—acknowledge Him as King, Lord, loving, gracious, and express your gratitude.
  • Confess any sin that remains unaddressed in your life. Repent by choosing to turn away from sin and move toward God.
  • Bring to God any area where you need His guidance or support.
  • Remember to pray for your friends, family, leaders, and all those you care about—they need prayer too.
  • Ask God to show you how to live out His Word, referencing James 1:22, and become a doer, not just a hearer.
