SEVEN STARS / REVELATION 1:16

(KJV) Revelation 1:16

And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

SEVEN STARS / REVELATION 1:16

The seven stars represent either angel who are assigned, each to a church, to assist it in its spiritual warfare (Revelation 1:20; Matthew 18:10). The “double-edged sword” (Revelation 2:12, 16; Revelation 6:8; Revelation 19:15, 21) represents God’s Word, which either cuts away sin from the churches and brings God’s grace and forgiveness, or in judgment cuts a church off from God’s kingdom (Revelation 3:14-22; Hebrews 4:12).

A SON OF MAN / REVELATION 1:13

(KJV) Revelation 1:13

And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.

A SON OF MAN / REVELATION 1:13

This term refers to the exalted Christ – the Son of God who became a human. “Son of man” is also the term used by the Old Testament prophet, Daniel (Daniel 7:13; 10:16). In this vision, Jesus Christ is described as king, priest and judge of His churches (Revelation 1:13-16). The full-length robe (Exodus 28:4; 29:5) and gold sash depict Him as high priest – the ultimate One representing man to God and God to man (Hebrews 8:1). In the Old Testament, the roles of king and priest were to remain separate and distinct, but these roles are combined and perfectly fulfilled in Jesus Christ. The detailed description of Jesus’ white hair and blazing eyes indicates wisdom, dignity (Proverbs 6:31) and penetrating insight.

I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, 11 Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.

IN THE SPIRIT / REVELATION 1:10-11

This expression refers to a special intensity of spiritual awareness that causes a godly person to be extremely receptive to the communication of the Holy Spirit through extraordinary means such as visions (Acts 10:10).

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

THE ALPHA AND THE OMEGA / REVELATION 1:8

These are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. This is another way of saying that God is the beginning and the ending of all things – including human history – the Source of all life and the fulfillment of all perfection. God is eternal. From creation to the completion of His perfect plan for His people, He is Lord overall. To Him belong the final victory over evil and the authority over all things. This same title, or designation, for God the Father is used also for Jesus as God the Son (Revelation 22:13). Nine of the ten New Testament references to God as the “Almighty” occur in Revelation (Revelation 1:8; 4:8; 11:17; 15:3; 16:7, 14; 19:6, 15; 21:22). The other occurrence is 2 Corinthians 6:18. (Two other verses – Romans 9:29 and James 5:4 use a different Greek term, which the NIV also translates as “Almighty”).

HE IS COMING / REVELATION 1:7

The primary purpose of the book of Revelation is to describe the ultimate triumph of God’s kingdom and purposes when Christ returns to destroy the forces of evil and establish His kingdom on earth. The end-time events surrounding that coming are also predicted and described throughout the book (Daniel 7:13; Matthew 24:29-30). The eschatology (“teaching of the last things”) or Revelation is a presentation of a definitive conclusion to time as we know it and the fulfillment of God’s purposes for all creation. It reveals that history will end in victory and reward for God’s faithful people, but it will end in the defeat, destruction and judgment of Satan’s system in this world (Revelation 17-18). Finally, Christ will reign forever with His people (Revelation 20:4; Revelation 21:1- 22:5).

HIM WHO IS, AND WHO WAS, AND WHO IS TO COME / REVELATION 1:4-5

This is a specific reference to the eternal nature of God the Father (Exodus 3:14, 15). “The seven spirits” refer to the completeness and perfection of all aspects of the Holy Spirit’s work in the church and in the world. God’s Son, Jesus, is here named as “the firstborn from the dead” (Colossians 1:18) and as the ultimate King over all things (Revelation 19:16). All three Persons of the Trinity (the one true God in three distinct, interrelated and unified persons; Mark 1:11) are cited in this opening blessing. All three share the same attributes as the eternal God, with all power, authority and perfection.

John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;

TO THE SEVEN CHURCHES / REVELATION 1:4

Revelation is addressed to seven churches in Asia (at the time a Roman province located in what is now part of western Turkey). The church community, each one called by the name of the particular city in which it was found, was probably made up of various congregations in that city or geographic region. Though the specific issues addressed to each church were obviously very relevant to those particular congregations, it is likely that Jesus chose these churches because the same issues were common to all churches of that day. (It is likely that the entire book of Revelation – including the seven letters – was sent to each church; Revelation 1:11.) The word “seven” stands for a complete whole. What was said to these churches is meant for the entire body of Jesus Christ (all followers of Christ throughout the ages). That is to say, the “seven churches” represent all the churches from that time to the present, and the messages are still just as relevant for us as for the original readers. The “seven spirits” (or “the sevenfold Spirit” likely represent the completeness and perfection of the Holy Spirit’s ministry to the church (Revelation 5:5; 5:6; Isaiah 11:2-3).
