FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / ACTS 13:52

(KJV) Acts 13:52
And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / ACTS 13:52

The form of the Greek verb translated “filled” expresses continued action in past time. The disciples were being continually filled and empowered day by day. That is, they were like containers filled with fresh water, which were continually having more fresh water poured into them so that they overflowed and affected everything around them. The Spirit’s fullness is not merely a one-time initial experience, but rather a life of fresh and renewed fillings that give God’s people the ability to accomplish specific tasks, meet specific refreshment to others (Ephesians 5:18).

FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / ACTS 9:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / ACTS 9:17

Three days after Paul’s supernatural encounter with Christ on the road to Damascus, at which time Paul surrendered his life to Christ, he is filled with the Holy Spirit. Paul’s experience parallels that of the disciples at Pentecost. First, he experiences the new spiritual birth and is saved (Acts 9:3-19); then later he is “filled with the Holy Spirit.” Although Luke does not specifically say that Paul spoke in tongues when he received the gift of the Holy Spirit, it is reasonable to assume that he did for these reasons:

  1. The pattern revealed in the New Testament is that a person filled with the Spirit began to speak in tongues (languages they had never learned, but spoke as the Spirit enabled them, Acts 2:4; Acts 10:14-45; Acts 10:46; Acts 11:15; Acts 19:6).
  2. Paul himself says that he frequently spoke in tongues: “I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you” (1 Corinthians 14:18).

MY SERVANTS, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN – IN THOSE DAYS / ACTS 2:18

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

MY SERVANTS, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN – IN THOSE DAYS / ACTS 2:18

MY SERVANTS, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN

According to Joel’s prophecy, quoted here by Peter, the baptism in the Holy Spirit is for those already in God’s kingdom – who are already “born-again” (John 3:3-4; John 3:5; John 3:6) followers of Christ. The promise applies to all male and female, who have devoted themselves to Jesus and who belong to God.

IN THOSE DAYS

Peter, quoting Joel, says that God will pour out His Spirit “in those days” (Acts 2:17) The outpouring of the Holy Spirit (when God generously sends His Spirit to fill, empower and live through His followers) and the supernatural signs and expressions that come with it cannot be limited to just the one “day” of Pentecost. The power and benefits of the Holy Spirit are available for every Christian throughout the church age. That is the entire period of time between Christ’s first coming (or more precisely surrounding His resurrection, return to heaven and sending the Holy Spirit) and His second coming (Revelation 19-20; Acts 2:39). This, of course, included the time in which we now live.

And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal.

BOWED DOWN TO ALL THE STARRY HOSTS / 2 KINGS 17:16

The Israelites worshiped gods of astrology. They believed such gods would provide guidance and a better life, including prosperity fertility, health, pleasure, wellbeing and security (Judges 2:13). For this reason, Paul calls greed “idolatry” (Colossians 3:5) because it causes people to depend on something other than God to fulfill their needs and desires. Jesus Himself says we cannot pursue wealth as a major goal in life and serve God at the same time (Matthew 6:24; Ephesians 5:5).

JESUS HAD NOT YET BEEN GLORIFIED / JOHN 7:39

(KJV) John 7:39

(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

JESUS HAD NOT YET BEEN GLORIFIED / JOHN 7:39

This refers to the glory and honor Jesus would gain by dying on the cross for our sins (John 12:23-24) and being raised from the dead. Jesus had to complete His work on earth before the Holy Spirit could begin His work in the church. It is also true in individual lives today: one cannot receive the Spirit until he or she deals with sin (until it is confessed to Christ, forgiven and abandoned). “The Spirit” refers to all the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers, including spiritual birth and renewal (John 20:22) and the baptism in the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4). For an overview of the Holy Spirit’s involvement in people’s lives.

AS THE SCRIPTURE HAS SAID – STREAMS OF LIVING WATER / JOHN 7:38

AS THE SCRIPTURE HAS SAID

Jesus is referring to the gift of the Holy Spirit that would be given to His followers after He left the earth (John 16:7). The Spirit guides and empowers Christ’s followers in a way that allows them to experience his overflowing life. As Christians respond to the Spirit’s direction and exercise His power, this “living water” will “flow” out to others with the spiritually healing, life-giving message of Jesus Christ (John 10:10; John 14:12; John 15:5; Psalms 1:3; Psalms 46:4; Isaiah 32:15; 44:3; 58:11: Jeremiah 31:12; Ezekiel 47:1-12; Joel 3:18; Zechariah 14:8).

God promises to generously bless those who have chosen to live by His Word with its standards, guidelines, instructions, commands and promises. They will enjoy His personal presence (Genesis 26:3), which will bring them strength, help and protection (Ephesians 3:16; Colossians 1:11; Luke 24:50).

THE LAW

The law (Hebrew torah) represents God’s entire instruction to His people. It can also refer to the Pentateuch (the first five Old Testament books, or to the Old Testament as a whole.

THE VISION – ISAIAH – CONCERNING JUDAH / ISAIAH 1:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Isaiah 1:1

The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

THE VISION – ISAIAH – CONCERNING JUDAH / ISAIAH 1:1

THE VISION

The visions that Isaiah had were not something of his own making or expressions of his personal desires. He received visions from God and spoke and wrote about what he saw through the inspiration (direct revelation, empowerment, guidance to communicate God’s exact message and intentions) of the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:20-21). Through Isaiah, God communicated an unmistakable message – a preview of coming events in His plan of salvation (to restore people to a right relationship with Himself).

ISAIAH

The name Isaiah means “the LORD saves.” As a prophet commissioned (to be charged with a duty and the authority necessary to fulfill that duty) by God, Isaiah began his ministry about 740 B.C., the year King Uzziah died (Isaiah 6:1). He prophesied 40 or more years and probably died about 680 B.C.

CONCERNING JUDAH

Isaiah’s prophetic ministry took place during the time of the divided kingdom (1 Kings 12:20; 2 Chronicles 10:1). The northern kingdom – called either “Israel,” “Samaria” or “Ephraim,” with its capital at Samaria – included ten Israelite tribes. The southern kingdom – usually called “Judah,” with its capital at Jerusalem – included the remaining tribes of Judah and Benjamin. Both kingdoms had defied God and His law by relying on foreign nations and false gods to keep them safe from their enemies. The northern kingdom was conquered and destroyed by Assyria in 722 B.C. (2 Kings 17:16). Isaiah warned Judah that they too would be destroyed because of their sin and rebellion against God (Isaiah 39:6).

IN THE LAST DAYS / ISAIAH 2:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Isaiah 2:2

And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD’S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.

IN THE LAST DAYS / ISAIAH 2:2

The New Testament broadly defines the “last days” as the period of time between Jesus’ first coming (by birth) and His second coming (Acts 2:17). In the sense, the second coming does not refer to what typically is called the rapture of the church – when Christ will take His followers from the world before He begins His final judgments (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). The rapture is sometimes referred to as the “first stage” of the second coming. But Christ’s literal second coming is when He will return to earth following the tribulation judgments to rescue those who turned to Him during that time and to destroy the forces of the antichrist (Revelation 19). Between the time of Christ’s birth and His return to earth, His message of spiritual life and peace will spread to all people. What Isaiah describes in Isaiah 2:1-5 will reach its complete fulfillment after Christ’s second coming. At that time, He will establish God’s kingdom on earth, reign among His people and rule the earth in peace for a thousand years (Revelation 20). After this will come the final judgements of both the wicked and the righteous and the establishment of a new heaven and earth in which God will live forever with His people (Revelation 21-22).

ACCORDING TO THE SINFUL NATURE … THE SPIRIT / ROMANS 8:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Romans 8:5

For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

ACCORDING TO THE SINFUL NATURE … THE SPIRIT / ROMANS 8:5

Paul describes two types of people: those who follow the pull of selfish desires that come from their rebellious natures and those who live by the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit.

  1. To live “according to the sinful nature” is to desire, take pleasure in, be occupied with and try to satisfy the corrupt desires of sinful human nature. Such living includes immoral behavior, selfish ambition, jealousy, hatred, drunkenness, outbursts of anger and any other attitudes or choices of behavior that do not pleas God (Galatians 5:19-20; Galatians 5:21). Obscenity, pornography, drug addiction, mental and emotional pleasure from sexual images in movies, plays, magazines, books and television have a powerful hold on countless people’s lives.
  2. To live “in accordance with the Spirit” is to pursue and submit to the Holy Spirit’s guidance and direction and to rely on His power to live as God desires. It means focusing one’s attention, thoughts, energies and values on God’s desires and purposes. This requires keeping a constant awareness of God’s presence and trusting Him to provide the help and power needed to accomplish His will (His desires, plans and intentions based on His character and purposes).
  3. It is impossible to follow the sinful nature and the Holy Spirit at the same time (Romans 8:7-8; Galatians 5:17-18).  Those who resist the Spirit’s power and assistance and rely on their own ability (Romans 8:13) are choosing to become God’s enemies (Romans 8:7; James 4:4). They can expect spiritual and eternal death (Romans 8:13). Those who make God’s desires and purposes their primary passion and concern can expect eternal life and companionship with God (Romans 8:10-11, 15-16).
