Before eating, Christ thanked His heavenly Father for the food. Christians today ought to follow His example and give thanks at every meal as a means of recognizing God’s care and provision for us. This opportunity becomes an act of worship that honors God. COMPASSION / MARK 6:34

And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.

COMPASSION / MARK 6:34

Compassion is a deep, heartfelt emotion that involves feeling deep sorrow for another’s suffering and misfortune. But it goes beyond a feeling of identifying with the afflicted. True compassion is willing to take action to help a person in need. It is a character trait both of God (Deuteronomy 30:3; 2 Kings 13:23; Psalms 78:38; 11:4; 15:32; Luke 7:13). For this reason, God expects an attitude of compassion to be a part of the Christian’s life (Matthew 18:33; Luke 10:33).

ANOINTED … WITH OIL / MARK 6:13

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 6:13

 And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.

ANOINTED … WITH OIL / MARK 6:13

Healing by anointing with oil (putting a little oil on the person who needs healing) is mentioned only here and in James 5:14. In the ancient world, olive oil was commonly used as a medicine or a salve (Isaiah 1:6; Luke 10:34), but God’s people throughout the Old Testament used it as part of ceremonies that installed or commissioned leaders for service to God. The oil in this case was probably used as a symbol of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit (Zechariah 4:3-6; Zechariah 4:3; Zechariah 4:6) and as a point of contact to encourage faith.

LACK OF FAITH / MARK 6:6

Just as a lack of faith hindered the working of miracles in Jesus’ hometown, so unbelief in the church still gets in the way of powerful things Christ desires to do among His people today. Failing to accept what the Bible says is true, denying that the gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12; 1 Corinthians 14) are for the church today or rejecting God’s standards of right and wrong will prevent the Lord from showing His power among His people. Christ’s followers must maintain an intense spiritual hunger for God’s Word and pray, “increase our faith” (Luke 17:5; Matthew 17:20).

JESUS … A PROPHET / MARK 6:4

But Jesus, said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.

JESUS … A PROPHET / MARK 6:4

Jesus is portrayed in the Gospels as a prophet (Mark 6:4, 15; Matthew 21:11; Luke 4:24; Acts 3:20-23) in a way that was consistent with the mission and message of God’s prophets throughout the Old Testament. The following characteristics identify Jesus as a prophet:

  1. He was a man filled and empowered by the Holy Spirit and full of the knowledge of God’s Word (Matthew 21:42; 22:29; Luke 4:1, 18; 24:27; John 3:34).
  2. His life was characterized by intimate spiritual unity and relationship with God, His Father (Luke 5:16).
  3. He gave prophetic predictions, some of which have already taken place and others which pertain to the end times yet to come (Matthew 24; Luke 19:43-44).
  4. He performed symbolic actions that represented spiritual truths and expressed a sincere passion for God’s honor (Matthew 21:12-13; John 2:13-17). 
  5. He exposed the shallow and unfaithful hearts of the religious leaders and criticized the way they followed their own traditions rather than God’s Word (Mark 7:7-9, 13).
  6. He shared God’s sorrow and suffering over the spiritually lost condition of those who refused to turn from their own ways and follow God (Luke 13:34; 19:41).
  7. He focused on the moral and ethical principles of God’s Word (holiness, justice, righteousness, love, mercy) in contrast to relying on religious ceremonies to keep people in a right relationship with God (Mark 12:38-40; Matthew 23:1-36).
  8. He proclaimed the supreme and final reign and judgment of God (Matthew 11:22, 24; 10:15; Luke 10:12, 14). 
  9. He called people to repentance – to change their attitude toward God, admit their sin, turn from their own way and begin following God and His purposes (Mark 6:12; Matthew 4:17).

Psalms 20 and 21 are companion psalms, or psalms that go together. They are prayers to God about the warfare of His people against their enemies. Psalms 20 is a prayer before the battle; Psalms 21 is a praise after the battle. For those who follow Christ, Psalms 20 can be applied to the ongoing spiritual warfare in which they are engaged. As we struggle against unseen, yet very real, forces of evil, we must deeply desire – and trust God for – victory over Satan and demonic powers (Ephesians 6:12).

JUST BELIEVE / MARK 5:36

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.

JUST BELIEVE / MARK 5:36

The synagogue ruler – a man with authority over the place and process of worship – came to Jesus in desperation because his daughter was dying (Mark 5:22-23). Jesus agreed to go with him, but before they arrived at Jairus’ home people brought word that the girl had died (Mark 5:35). Jesus was not at all shaken, and He responded by encouraging the father’s faith, even in this seemingly hopeless situation. Throughout history, true followers of God have placed their trust in Him even when it seemed as if all was lost. In such time, God gave these ordinary people an extraordinary faith that allowed them to fulfill His plans and purposes for them (Psalms 22:4; Isaiah 26:3-4; 43:2). This was true for Abraham (Genesis 22:2; James 2:21-22), Moses (Exodus 14:10-22; 32:10-14), David (1 Samuel 17:44-47), Jehoshaphat (2 Chronicles 20:1-2, 12) and Jairus (Mark 5:21-23, 35-42).

When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment. 28 For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.

JUST TOUCH HIS CLOTHES / MARK 5:27-28

The Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) often speak of the sick touching Jesus (Mark 3:10; 5:27-34; 6:56) or of Jesus touching the sick (Mark 1:41-42; 7:33-35: Matthew 8:3, 15: 9:29-30; 20:34; Luke 5:13; 7:14-15; 22:51). It was the contact and presence of Jesus that mattered. Because of His intimate relationship with God His Father and His complete dependence on the Holy Spirit, Jesus’ entire being was saturated with God’s miraculous power. This power is available to heal us because Christ sympathizes with our weaknesses and is our source of life and grace (undeserved favor, love, kindness, help and enablement; Hebrews 4:16). Our responsibility in receiving healing is simply to stay in a close relationship with Christ, to ask Him to meet our needs and to rely on Him to do what is best for us (Matthew 17:20). The same power that Jesus showed is also available to work miracles through His followers. As long as we remain in a deep personal relationship with God and rely on the power of the Holy Spirit, we too can be used by God to bring physical healing to suffering individuals. In this particular situation, the Greek word translated “healed” (Mark 5:34) actually means “saved,” implying that the woman’s faith in Christ was enough for both physical healing (“be free from your suffering”) and spiritual salvation (“go in peace”). Mark often puts these together (Mark 2:1-12; 3:1-6).

A MAN WITH AN EVIL SPIRIT / MARK 5:2-17

Demon-possessed people suffer under satanic control (Acts 10:38) or influence (Matthew 12:45; Acts 16:16-18) because evil spirits have literally taken up residence in their bodies (Luke 13:11). Scripture records many occasions in which Jesus drove out demons, commanding them to release their control over the individuals and leave them alone (Mark 5:8). In this situation, Jesus freed this man from the severe satanic oppression that had troubled him for some time. Yet, the townspeople seemed more concerned about the business losses of pig owners than they were about the spiritual misery of the man who had been demon-possessed. It seemed easier to accept the ruin of this man’s life than to face the power and authority that Jesus was revealing.

IN HER WAS FOUND THE BLOOD / REVELATION 18:23-24

And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived. 24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

IN HER WAS FOUND THE BLOOD / REVELATION 18:23-24

The last two verses in Revelation 18 summarize the reason for Babylon’s fall (the destruction of the corrupt world) religiously, economically and politically. 

  1. “Your merchants were the world’s great men” (Revelation 18:23) – But their greatness was not good; instead, it led to pride and arrogance. They dominated by manipulating and controlling the world markets and economy.
  2. “By your magic spell all the nations were let astray” (Revelation 18:23) – Morally and religiously, the world system flowed with sensuality and ungodliness. Wicked practices such as sorcery, witchcraft, magic arts, the occult, drug-induced spiritual experiences and humanistic philosophies (Colossians 2:8) have been widespread in corrupt societies throughout history. The enticement of wealth and sensual pleasure has led many nations to their downfall. These things have even tended to make their way into the church time and again.
  3. “In her was found the blood of the prophets and of the saints” – The world has always rejected, mistreated, persecuted and even killed those who boldly stood for God and rejected worldly standards. Jesus Himself told His followers to expect such treatment (Matthew 5:12; Matthew 24:9; John 15:20). Paul also warned that “everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Timothy 3:12). But the world will not go unpunished. God will one day avenge the blood of His faithful people (Revelation 6:9; Revelation 9:10).
