Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

POWER … GIVEN TO YOU FROM ABOVE / JOHN 19:11

Jesus says that all earthly power exists only as God permits it (Daniel 4:34-35; Romans 13:1). Pilate’s sin (his offense against God) involved giving in to the people because of political convenience and to please the crowd. Israel’s sin was greater – they were rejecting their Messiah (their only Savior).

The real reasons people rejected Jesus before His death are some of the same reasons people reject Him today. Often, Jesus does not fit people’s expectations. Many misunderstand Him or have misguided notions about His purposes. In most cases, people reject His message because it contradicts their selfish and sinful desires and lifestyles. As a result, people today still reject His message and persecute His followers.

I WILL REJOICE IN THE LORD / HABAKKUK 3:18-19

(KJV) Habakkuk 3:18-19

Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. 19 The Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.

I WILL REJOICE IN THE LORD / HABAKKUK 3:18-19

Habakkuk did not serve God because of what God could give him. The prophet’s service was given because he personally knew God – the Sovereign Lord of the universe (with all power, control and authority to do as he desires). For that reason alone, the Lord is worthy of praise and honor. Even though God’s judgment was coming on Judah and they would certainly experience suffering and loss (Habakkuk 3:16), Habakkuk chose to rejoice in the Lord. God would be his Savior and an unfailing source of strength. He also knew beyond a doubt that a portion of God’s faithful people would survive the Babylonian invasion, and he was confident that those who lived by faith in God would finally be victorious (Habakkuk 2:4)

GOD CAME / HABAKKUK 3:3-16

In these verses, Habakkuk refers to the time when God miraculously liberated His people from slavery in Egypt (Exodus 14). The same God who brought freedom and salvation in the past would come again in all His glory. All who were waiting and looking forward to that coming would experience true life. Someday all who have placed their full trust and hope in God will witness His triumph over all empires and all nations.

O Lord, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O Lord, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy.

RENEW THEM IN OUR DAY / HABAKKUK 3:2

The prophet knew of God’s great power and had heard accounts of God’s miraculous actions on behalf of His people in the past, and He longed to see such things again. But because of wickedness and rebellion, the people had not experienced God’s presence in a powerful way for quite some time. In fact, they had offended God so greatly that the only display of power they were bound to see any time soon would come in the form of His judgement.  Therefore, Habakkuk made two requests.

  1. He prayed that God would come again and reveal His presence among His people with a fresh display of power. He knew that God’s people would not survive if the Lord did not intervene, or step in, with His generous grace – His Undeserved favor – and the power of His Spirit. Only then could they experience true spiritual life.
  2.  Habakkuk prayed that during the coming times of distress, God would be merciful to his people because without His mercy they would not survive. We too need a continual supply of God’s grace and mercy. As the foundation of the church is being shaken today, and trouble and opposition seem to be everywhere, we need to pray earnestly for a renewed sense of God’s presence and power. Nothing else will bring spiritual revival and renewal to God’s people.

TESTIFY TO THE TRUTH / JOHN 18:37

An essential part of Jesus’ mission on earth was to testify to the truth and point people to it. That truth includes the fact that He is God in human form and that He came to bring spiritual salvation by restoring people’s opportunity for a relationship with God. The truth of this gospel (the “good news” of forgiveness and new life through faith in Christ) is now recorded in Scripture (God’s written Word, the Bible), which is God’s truth to humankind, Ministers compromise and make this truth hard to see when they practice and encourage false teaching, tolerant unbiblical behavior, engage in meaningless arguments and attempt to please people with their message. By refusing to teach the clear difference between right and wrong, truth and error, follow their example – reject the purpose of Christ’s coming and mislead many people. Churches must never sacrifice truth (John 17:8, 17; 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10) because, just like Pilate, many people today are still wondering, “What is truth?” They need to see and hear the truth from truly devoted Christians.

MY KINGDOM IS NOT OF THIS WORLD / JOHN 18:36

Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

MY KINGDOM IS NOT OF THIS WORLD / JOHN 18:36

Concerning the true nature and purpose of Christ’s kingdom, three points should be noted:

  1. What Jesus’ kingdom is not: It is “not of this world.” It did not originate in this world, and its purpose is not to take over the world’s system. Jesus did not come to establish a political theocracy (a government ruled by a religious body or particular view of God) or aim for world control. Jesus states that if He had come to establish a political kingdom on earth, then “my servants would fight.” Since this is not the nature of His kingdom, they do not resort to military war or revolution to promote Christ’s purpose on earth (Matthew 26:51-52). They do not align themselves with political parties, social pressure groups or any secular organizations in order to establish God’s kingdom and purposes on earth. They refuse to use the power gained through Jesus’ victory on the cross (the message of Christ) as a proud attempt to rule society. Rather than using worldly weapons (2 Corinthians 10:4), Jesus’ followers are armed only with spiritual weapons (Ephesians 6:10-18). This does not mean, however, that Christians should avoid participating in government or social action. They are still responsible to uphold God’s demand for justice, peace and restraints against lawlessness. By their gracious words and blameless and honorable lifestyles, Christians should challenge governments and societies regarding their moral responsibilities to God.
  2. What Jesus’ kingdom is: Christ’s kingdom – or the kingdom of God – involves His power, authority, purposes and spiritual activity in the lives of all who receive Him and obey His Word (John 18:37). The kingdom of God is a matter of “righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17; notice that these are all inner spiritual qualities that affect outward attitudes and actions). Christ’s kingdom is in active battle against the spiritual forces of Satan, using spiritual weapons (Matthew 12:28; Luke 11:20; Acts 26:18; Ephesians 6:12). The role of the church (the community of all true followers of Christ, worldwide and in local congregations) is that of a servant to Jesus Christ, not that of a ruler over this present world. The church’s strength is not in worldly power but in the cross – the sacrifice and salvation of Jesus Christ. When God’s people suffer rejection and persecution at the hands of the world, it is really an honor because they are identifying with Christ (2 Corinthians 3:7-18). Only by rejecting worldly power did the New Testament church find God’s power. Christ’s followers today face this same choice in their individual lives: only by losing their lives in the world (putting aside all selfish interests and concerns and surrendering completely to God) will they find their highest purpose in God. 
  3. What Jesus’ kingdom will involve will be: In the future, Christ’s kingdom will involve His rule and reign in the new heaven and earth. This will occur after He returns to earth following the tribulation period to judge the nations, destroy the antichrist and reign on earth for a thousand years. He will then bring Satan to a final end in the lake of fire (Revelation 19:11-20:15).

See Matthew 26:39 on Christ’s sorrow and suffering. In the Old Testament, the cup of wine was a common metaphor, or word picture, where the contents of the cup is a symbol of God’s anger and judgment toward human sin and rebellion. That is the reason Christ would suffer in our place – to take the punishment for our sin (Isaiah 53:5).

KINGDOM OF GOD … POWER / 1 CORINTHIANS 4:20

For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.

KINGDOM OF GOD … POWER / 1 CORINTHIANS 4:20

The “kingdom of God” reveals itself in power, which means that members of God’s kingdom must have more than talk and a good message; they must demonstrate a living witness of the power of the Spirit as well (1 Corinthians 2:4; Acts 1:8). In the New Testament, this power was strong and seen by the people enough to convince them of their sin, their accountability to God and their need to get right with Him (John 16:8). The openness allowed people to receive God’s forgiveness and to enter a personal relationship with God through faith in Christ (1 Corinthians 4:15; Acts 26:16-18). The power of God’s kingdom is also evident through the working of miracles (1 Corinthians 2:4) and the ability to do what is right by God’s standard (Romans 14:17).
