(KJV) Exodus 13:7

Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days; and there shall no leavened bread be seen with thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters.

During the Passover week, yeast (Hebrew se’or, meaning any yeastlike substance capable of producing fermentation in dough) and anything leavened (Hebrew hamets, meaning anything that has been fermented or has yeast in it) was to be removed from Israelite homes (Exodus 12:15; Exodus 12:19). All foods used in the Passover feast had to conform to these regulations. 

1. The restriction of yeast and fermented things in the homes during Passover probably has to do with the Bible’s teaching that both symbolize corruption, evil and moral impurity (Matthew 16:6; Mark 8:15; 1 Corinthians 5:6-8). 
2. Interestingly, God did not command any use of wine during this week of Passover feasts. Perhaps none was used at this time, not even that which was unfermented. But the absolute removal from the home of all things fermented or that contained yeast would have to include any wine that contained fermentation. Any other wine that might have been used would definitely have to meet the same rigorous standard as all foods: no fermentation. Since Passover prophetically pointed to the perfect blood sacrifice of Christ it makes sense that the wine, which represented Jesus’ blood, was to be free from corruption (Exodus 34:25; Leviticus 2:11; 6:17; 1 Corinthians 5:7-8; Luke 22:18).

(KJV) Exodus 13:1-2

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, ² Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine.

Because God had spared the firstborn son of all Israelite families and rescued all of the Hebrew people from the Egyptians, He now claimed His ownership over them. 

1. God commanded the nation to acknowledge this by dedicating their firstborn sons to God’s service. Later this responsibility was transferred to the Levites (one of Israel’s twelve tribes) who became the people’s representatives in performing God’s special services, such as the priesthood and leading worship. However, families were to “redeem” (“buy back”) such children by paying a price (Exodus 13:13; Numbers 3:11-13, 50-51; 18:16).
2. This act reminded the Israelites that God had redeemed them from slavery in Egypt and that they belonged to Him. Joseph and Mary obeyed this law when they dedicated Jesus as their firstborn (Luke 2:22-23).

(KJV) Exodus 12:26-27

And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service? ²⁷ That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the Lord’s passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped.

Parents were expected to use the Passover to teach their children the truth of how God had redeemed (“bought back” or rescued) them from slavery and sin and made them His special people. In a similar way, the Lord’s Supper, which is the New Testament believers’ “Passover,” is practiced to remind us of how Christ saves us and provides freedom from slavery to sin (1 Corinthians 11:24-25).

(KJV) Exodus 12:17

And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever.

Exodus 12:15-20 describes the Feast of Unleavened Bread that Israel was to celebrate after they entered Canaan, the promised land. This feast represented how God saved and separated His people from Egypt in order to fulfill His purposes. Yeast, which causes a rising or swelling and indicates a change known as fermentation, symbolizes sin. Unleavened bread (having no yeast) symbolized repentance. True repentance means rejecting sin and turning away from it in order to turn toward God and embrace His way of life (Exodus 13:7).

1. All yeast, which symbolized worldly corruption and sin, had to be removed from the Israelites’ houses. This act represented how their lives and homes were to be pure and reserved for God (Exodus 12:15-16) because of what He had done for them (Exodus 13:8-9). The New Testament makes a link between this Feast of Unleavened Bread and Christians removing “malice and wickedness” from their lives and living in “sincerity and truth” (1 Corinthians 5:6-8).
2. Failure to turn from sin and demonstrate faith toward God resulted in judgment. This meant being removed from God’s covenant, forfeiting salvation (Exodus 12:15) and giving up a relationship with God. 
3. The Passover meal was the signal that the Feast of Unleavened Bread had started (Exodus 12:6, 18-19). For a New Testament Christian, this shows the importance of faith, obedience and gratitude toward Christ, the ultimate sacrificial Lamb.

(KJV) Exodus 12:15

Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel.

Deliberately rejecting God’s instruction resulted in severe judgment (Exodus 12:19). The guilty person was expelled, or removed, from the community, sometimes by death (Exodus 31:14). Under the new covenant, those who reject Christ and choose to remain in sin exclude themselves from God’s grace and salvation.

And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the Lord throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.

The Passover feast was supposed to be an annual celebration for Israel. New Testament Christians are to participate regularly in the Lord’s Supper, or communion, which carries on the prophetic significance of the Passover (Matthew 26:26; 1 Corinthians 11:24-25; 1 Corinthians 5:7-8).

And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the Lord’s passover.

God told His people to be prepared for immediate departure. This picture of readiness emphasized that God’s followers must obey Him without hesitation.

(KJV) Exodus 12:8

And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.

The bread eaten along with the Passover lam was made with no yeast (Exodus 12:8). Since the Bible often mentions yeast to represent sin and corruption (Exodus 13:7; Matthew 16:6; Mark 8:15), this unleavened bread represented Israel’s separation from Egypt, which symbolized worldliness and sin (Exodus 12:15). This shows how individuals who follow God and have a personal relationship with Him must separate themselves from the sinful world and dedicate themselves to God alone. 

The “bitter herbs” would remind the Israelites of their bitter times as slaves in Egypt (Romans 6:21).

The Passover lamb and its blood point to Jesus Christ and the blood He shed as “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29; John 1:36: Isaiah 53:7; Acts 8:32-35; 1 Corinthians 5:7; Revelation 13:8).

(KJV) Exodus 12:1-2

And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt saying, ² This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.

Exodus 12 describes the Feast of the Passover (Exodus 12:1-14, 21-28) and the Feast of Unleavened Bread (Exodus 12:15-20). These celebrations were based on the historical events of the first Passover (when God spared the Israelites from harm) at the time of the exodus (Exodus 12 – 14). Because the Passover marked a new beginning for Israel, the month in which it occurred (March – April in our calendar) became “the first month” of a new year for the nation of Israel. The Lord wanted to remind Israel that their place as God’s people and their existence as a nation were the result of God miraculously rescuing them from Egypt.
