ONE LORD / EPHESIANS 4:4-6

(KJV) Ephesians 4:4-6

There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

ONE LORD / EPHESIANS 4:4-6

Essential to Christian faith and unity is the confession that there is only “one Lord.” 

  1. The fact that there is only “one Lord” means that Jesus Christ’s work of redemption (spiritual salvation, liberation from sin, restoration of our relationship with God) is perfect and sufficient. No other Savior or mediator is needed to bring us to God. Only Jesus provides the opportunity for spiritual salvation (1 Timothy 2:5-6; Hebrews 9:15). Only through Christ can we come near to God (Hebrews 7:25).
  2. To give equal or greater loyalty to any authority (secular or religious) other than God – as revealed in Christ and His inspired Word – is the same as rejecting Christ as Lord and cutting off the life that is in Him alone. In order to truly follow Christ and experience the “unity of the Spirit” (Ephesians 4:3), a person must submit to the Lord Jesus Christ as the supreme Leader in his or her life and follow Christ’s authority as communicated in God’s written Word.

(KJV) Ephesians 4:3

Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

KEEP THE UNITY / EPHESIANS 4:3

“The unity of the Spirit” cannot be created by any human being or group of believers. As Paul has already emphasized in Ephesians 1 – 3, this unity already exists for those who have accepted the truth and received Christ. The Ephesians are now to maintain that unity, not through human efforts or organizations, but by living “a life worthy of the calling they have received” (Ephesians 4:1). Spiritual unity is not a matter of intellectual agreement on all issues. It is a unity of love and purpose (Ephesians 4:17-18) and is maintained by being loyal to the truth and moving in obedience to the leading of the Spirit (Ephesians 4:1-3, 14-15; Galatians 5:22-26). This unity is based on Christ’s love and purpose at work in and through our lives. It cannot be achieved “by human effort” (Galatians 3:3). It will, however, express itself outwardly in good works (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 6:10; Titus 2:14; 1 John 3:17-18; Psalms 133:1-3; John 17:21).

Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

IMMEASURABLY MORE / EPHESIANS 3:20

God can do so much more than we ask and desire in prayer; His ability exceeds anything we can imagine. This promise is conditional, which means that it depends on the degree of the Holy Spirit’s presence, purpose and power operating in our lives (Ephesians 1:18-21; Ephesians 3:16-19; Isaiah 65:24; John 15:7; Philippians 2:13).

ROOTED AND ESTABLISHED IN LOVE / EPHESIANS 3:17

(KJV) Ephesians 3:17

That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

ROOTED AND ESTABLISHED IN LOVE / EPHESIANS 3:17

“Rooted” (Greek errizomenoi) is a horticultural term (dealing with plants), and “established” is an architectural term (dealing with buildings and structures) meaning “founded.” The follower of Jesus “being rooted” in the revelation of God’s love in Christ is like a plant with deep roots in the soil. “Being established” in his love is like a building with a strong foundation laid on a solid rock. Both metaphors, or word pictures, symbolize a deep relationship as opposed to a shallow relationship. These symbols also convey that revelation of “the love of Christ” (Ephesians 3:18) is necessary for a deep, solid relationship that is expressed in powerful ways for God’s honor Ephesians 3:19-21).

STRENGTHEN … INNER BEING / EPHESIANS 3:16-19

(KJV) Ephesians 3:16-19

That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

STRENGTHEN … INNER BEING / EPHESIANS 3:16-19

To be strengthened by the Spirit in the “inner being” is to have our spirits filled with the energy of His life and to have our souls (our motives, desires, feelings, thoughts and purposes) placed more and more under the Spirit’s influence and direction. In the most complete sense, this allows God to show His power through us in greater ways. There are four aspects to the purpose of this spiritual strengthening:

  1. That Christ may establish His presence in our hearts (Ephesians 3:16-17; Romans 8:9-10).
  2. That we may be grounded in sincere love for God, Christ and others.
  3. That we may comprehend with our minds and experience in our lives Christ’s love for us (Ephesians 3:18-19).
  4. That we may be filled with “all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:19; and Ephesians 1:23). God’s presence, through the Holy Spirit, should fill and saturate our lives in such a way that we reflect from our innermost being the character and honor of the Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 4:13, 15, 224-24).

GOD’S GRACE / EPHESIANS 3:7

The grace of God – undeserved favor and spiritual ability given to accomplish God’s purposes – is an empowering strength that comes from Christ and operates strength that comes from Christ and operates through the Holy Spirit living inside each believer (Ephesians 1:19; 4:7; Acts 6:8; 11:23; 14:26; 1 Corinthians 15:10; 2 Corinthians 12:9; Philippians 2:13; Colossians 1:29; Titus 2:11-13).

MYSTERY OF CHRIST / EPHESIANS 3:4

(KJV) Ephesians 3:4-5

Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) 5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;

MYSTERY OF CHRIST / EPHESIANS 3:4

Paul speaks of the “mystery of Christ,” hidden for ages past in God (Ephesians 3:9) and now made known by revelation (Ephesians 3:3) through the Holy Spirit to the apostles and prophets (Ephesians 3:5). The mystery is God’s purpose to “bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ” (Ephesians 1:10) and to include people of all nations (Ephesians 2:14-17) in the promise of spiritual salvation and eternal life (Ephesians 3:6; Romans 16:25-26; 2 Timothy 1:1). In the Old Testament, it was prophesied that the Gentiles (non-Jews) would turn to the God of Israel and be saved (Romans 15:9-12), so that was not a mystery to those of the New Testament world. But the fact that Gentiles would share equally in the life, promises and purposes of God (Ephesians 3:6) was unexpected by both Jews and Gentiles. It was a mystery that was temporarily hidden until God revealed His full plan of salvation through faith in Christ (Colossians 1:25-26).

FOUNDATION … APOSTLES / EPHESIANS 2:20

(KJV) Ephesians 2:20

And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

FOUNDATION … APOSTLES / EPHESIANS 2:20

A church can only be a true church if it is founded on the Christ-inspired, infallible (perfectly reliable, certain not to fail) revelation to the first apostles. 

  1. The New Testament apostles (“sent ones”) were those who received a direct commission from Christ to deliver His original message and to lead the effort in establishing His New Testament church (Acts 14:4). God used some of these men to write part of Scripture (God’s written Word). The apostles were the foundation stones of the church, and their message is preserved in the writings of the New Testament as the original, foundational testimony of the authentic and true message of Christ – a message that is valid for all people of all times. 
  2. All believers and churches are dependent on the words, message and faith of the first apostles as recorded in the book of Acts and in the apostles’ God-inspired New Testament writings. All generations of the church have the responsibility of obeying this God-given revelation and the privilege of testifying to its truth. The gospel – the “good news” and true message of Christ – given to the New Testament apostles through the Holy Spirit is the enduring source of life, truth and direction for the church. 
  3. All true believers and true churches show their genuine position within Christ’s body as they do the following: (a) They must agree with and earnestly strive to follow the New Testament teaching and revelation concerning Christ and His message (Acts 2:42). To reject the New Testament apostles’ teachings is to reject the Lord Himself (John 16:13-15; 1 Corinthians 14:36-38; Galatians 1:9-11). (b) They must continue the apostolic mission (being sent out with Christ’s message and authority to pioneer ministries throughout the world) by communicating the original New Testament message of Christ through faithful speaking, preaching and teaching in the power of the Spirit (Acts 1:8; 2 Timothy 1:8-14; Titus 1:7-9). (c)  They must not only believe the original apostolic message of the New Testament but also defend and guard it against all false representation and changes. The apostles’ original revelation from Christ as found in the New Testament can never be replaced or nullified (canceled, voided) by later revelation, testimony or prophecy (Acts 20:27-31; 1 Timothy 6:20).

THE TWO … THEIR HOSTILITY … PEACE / EPHESIANS 2:14-17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Ephesians 2:14-17

 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; 15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; 16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: 17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.

THE TWO … THEIR HOSTILITY … PEACE / EPHESIANS 2:14-17

These verses clearly describe the “barrier, the dividing wall of hostility” (Ephesians 2:14) that historically separated Jews and Gentiles (people of all nations who are not Israelite or Jewish). This separation was based primarily on religion. But God has brought into unity people of all nations and backgrounds as they sought a personal relationship with Him (Ephesians 6:9; Acts 10:34; Romans 2:11). He did so by taking the focus off of His law as the basis for a relationship with Himself (Romans 3:28-30) and bringing our full attention to His gift of salvation by grace (unearned favor and love) through faith in Christ alone (Romans 9:30; Galatians 2:16). All true believers have peace with God (Ephesians 2:16-17) and each other because the basis of their faith is in what Jesus Christ did through His death and resurrection.

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Ephesians 2:10

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

TO DO GOOD WORKS / EPHESIANS 2:10

Although we cannot be spiritually saved and made right with God by good works (Ephesians 2:8-9), God still desires that the lives of Christians be characterized by good works. It is part of what we are created to do. He has even prepared good things for us to do. We do not do these things to gain God’s favor, but to show our love and gratitude to God for the favor He has already shown us by His gracious gift of spiritual salvation through faith in Christ (Titus 2:14; 3:8). Our good works for God also provide an opportunity to influence others for Christ, showing them an example of His love and goodness and leading them to the point of receiving Christ’s forgiveness and new life for themselves (Matthew 5:14-16).
