START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) 2 Thessalonians 2:3
Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
THAT DAY WILL NOT COME UNTIL / 2 THESSALONIANS 2:3
Paul explains the events that will signal the beginning of “the day of the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 5:2). He also refers to the destruction of the man of lawlessness and to the spiritual rebellion and ungodliness that will increase in the end times. The sequence of events is as follows:
- Throughout the entire church age (following Christ’s resurrection and ascension back to heaven [or some say from Pentecost, Acts 2] to the time when He takes His faithful followers from the earth), a “secret power of lawlessness” (2 Thessalonians 2:7) is at work, reminding us that the end is coming. Evil will become increasingly unrestrained (held back less and less) as history draws to a close.
- As that power becomes stronger, spiritual rebellion and abandonment of faith in the church will reach major proportions (2 Thessalonians 2:3; Matthew 24:12; 2 Timothy 4:3-4).
- The restrainer (“the one who now holds it back”) of the “secret power” is then taken out of the way (2 Thessalonians 2:6-7). That is to say, any godly restraint against wickedness will be lifted, and evil will be free to take an even greater toll on the people of the earth. This will likely happen at the same time as faithful believers in the church are being taken from the world.
- Next, “the man of lawlessness” – the antichrist – is revealed (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4, 7, 9-10).
- The apostasy (spiritual rebellion and faithlessness) reaches its climax in total rebellion against God and His Word. Because they reject Him, “God sends a powerful delusion” (2 Thessalonians 2:11), allowing people to come under the influence of extreme deception “so that they will believe the lie” (2 Thessalonians 2:9-11).
- Later, the man of lawlessness is destroyed, along with all “who have delighted in wickedness” (2 Thessalonians 2:12); this occurs at Christ’s return to earth after the tribulation period (2 Thessalonians 2:8; Revelation 19:20-21).
