THAT DAY WILL NOT COME UNTIL / 2 THESSALONIANS 2:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 2 Thessalonians 2:3

Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

THAT DAY WILL NOT COME UNTIL / 2 THESSALONIANS 2:3

Paul explains the events that will signal the beginning of “the day of the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 5:2). He also refers to the destruction of the man of lawlessness and to the spiritual rebellion and ungodliness that will increase in the end times. The sequence of events is as follows:

  1. Throughout the entire church age (following Christ’s resurrection and ascension back to heaven [or some say from Pentecost, Acts 2] to the time when He takes His faithful followers from the earth), a “secret power of lawlessness” (2 Thessalonians 2:7) is at work, reminding us that the end is coming. Evil will become increasingly unrestrained (held back less and less) as history draws to a close.
  2. As that power becomes stronger, spiritual rebellion and abandonment of faith in the church will reach major proportions (2 Thessalonians 2:3; Matthew 24:12; 2 Timothy 4:3-4).
  3. The restrainer (“the one who now holds it back”) of the “secret power” is then taken out of the way (2 Thessalonians 2:6-7). That is to say, any godly restraint against wickedness will be lifted, and evil will be free to take an even greater toll on the people of the earth. This will likely happen at the same time as faithful believers in the church are being taken from the world.
  4. Next, “the man of lawlessness” – the antichrist – is revealed (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4, 7, 9-10).
  5. The apostasy (spiritual rebellion and faithlessness) reaches its climax in total rebellion against God and His Word. Because they reject Him, “God sends a powerful delusion” (2 Thessalonians 2:11), allowing people to come under the influence of extreme deception “so that they will believe the lie” (2 Thessalonians 2:9-11).
  6. Later, the man of lawlessness is destroyed, along with all “who have delighted in wickedness” (2 Thessalonians 2:12); this occurs at Christ’s return to earth after the tribulation period (2 Thessalonians 2:8; Revelation 19:20-21).

EASILY UNSETTLED OR ALARMED / 2 THESSALONIANS 2:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 2 Thessalonians 2:2

That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

EASILY UNSETTLED OR ALARMED / 2 THESSALONIANS 2:2

The Thessalonians were alarmed because of what the false teachers were saying about “the day of the Lord” (2 Thessalonians 2:1; 1 Thessalonians 5:2). He tells them not to worry because the day of God’s wrath – His severe end-time judgments and punishment on the world at large – has not yet arrived. Two things will signal its arrival:

  1. There must come a specific “rebellion” – both in the church (as many people abandon faith in God) and in the world (as people increasingly reject and rebel against God and His standards).
  2. The “man of lawlessness” will be revealed (2 Thessalonians 2:3). Paul goes on to state that these two events will not be fulfilled until the one who holds it back “is taken out of the way” (2 Thessalonians 2:7).

Paul’s reference to “some prophecy, report or letter” may suggest that the false teaching was being passed on through illegitimate use of the spiritual gifts of tongues and interpretation or through prophecy (1 Corinthians 14:29).

THE COMING OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST / 2 THESSALONIANS 2:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 2 Thessalonians 2:1

Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

THE COMING OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST / 2 THESSALONIANS 2:1

In his first letter to the Thessalonians, Paul assured all true followers of Christ that they would be caught up to meet the Lord in the air, and thus they would be with their Lord forever (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). The apostle was describing the event that would save them from God’s coming wrath, or judgment, on the earth (1 Thessalonians 1:10; 1 Thessalonians 5:9; 1 Thessalonians 5:10). Now however, false teachers were claiming that “the day of the Lord” (2 Thessalonians 2:2; the period of God’s end-time judgments on the earth, ending with His return to reign on earth) had already begun and that God’s final wrath was being poured out on the earth.

HE COMES TO BE GLORIFIED / 2 THESSALONIANS 1:10

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 2 Thessalonians 1:10

When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

HE COMES TO BE GLORIFIED / 2 THESSALONIANS 1:10

This passage is not speaking of the time when believers will be taken from earth to meet Christ in the air (John 14:2-3; 1 Thessalonians 4:17). Rather, it speaks of Christ’s literal return to earth at the end of the tribulation period. At this time, He will come in power and great glory to destroy the present world system and establish His thousand-year reign on earth to close out time as we know it (Revelation 19:11 – 20:4).

EVERLASTING DESTRUCTION / 2 THESSALONIANS 1:9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 2 Thessalonians 1:9

Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

EVERLASTING DESTRUCTION / 2 THESSALONIANS 1:9

This is the clearest statement in Paul’s letters concerning the future eternal punishment of the wicked (Matthew 10:28 on hell). This does not refer to annihilation (to wipe out of existence) because even the souls of those who reject God will exist eternally. The meaning of this phrase is more like “complete ruin” – as the ungodly are totally defeated, eternally condemned and separated from Christ’s presence forever in “the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15).

GIVE RELIEF TO YOU / 2 THESSALONIANS 1:6-7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 2 Thessalonians 1:6-7

Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,

GIVE RELIEF TO YOU / 2 THESSALONIANS 1:6-7

While God’s justice means punishment for those who stand against Him and cause trouble for His people, it means relief and reward for those who are faithful to Him. Both of these sides to God’s justice will be revealed when Christ returns. God will begin to repay the wicked (2 Thessalonians 1:6) at the beginning of the tribulation (when He unleashes His severe end-time judgments on the earth, Revelation 6). However, complete justice and punishment (2 Thessalonians 1:6-9) will occur after the Lord Jesus returns to earth at the end of the time to destroy the wicked (2 Thessalonians 1:7-10; Revelation 19:11-12). Then will come their final judgment and eternal punishment (Revelation 20:11-15). But God’s faithful people will experience relief from the world’s punishment when He removes them from the earth. Then, when the Lord Jesus returns to earth to destroy the forces of evil and govern the human race for the last period of history, full justice will finally occur for all. While the wicked will be appropriately judged, Christ’s faithful followers will be fully proven to be righteous and true (Revelation 6:9-11; 19:14-15) and will reign with Him on earth. Their end will be to go on to the reward of living with Christ throughout eternity (Revelation 21).

GOD’S JUDGMENT IS RIGHT / 2 THESSALONIANS 1:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 2 Thessalonians 1:5

Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:

GOD’S JUDGMENT IS RIGHT / 2 THESSALONIANS 1:5

The Thessalonians were being faithful to their relationship with God despite extreme opposition and persecution (2 Thessalonians 1:4). Their attitude through suffering was “evidence” of God’s right judgment, meaning that God judged the Thessalonians to be worthy of representing Christ and His kingdom for which they were suffering. For this reason, God would not leave them on their own but would provide the strength and resources necessary to endure their trials. The trials would develop greater moral character and spiritual strength in them, and they would also prove that God was on their side. Their unfair suffering was also a sign that the persecutors – those causing the trouble – were opposing God’s own people and would in time experience God’s justice and punishment (2 Thessalonians 1:5-9).

LOVE THE TRUTH / 2 THESSAIONIANS 2:9-10

(KJV) 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10
Even him
, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

10And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

LOVE THE TRUTH / 2 THESSAIONIANS 2:9-10

From the very beginning of creation, the central issue in humanity’s relationship with God has been the choice either to reject God and the truth of His Word or to love and obey them. That choice and response will continue to be pivotal (so important that it will determine future action and consequences) in the last days of this age. Salvation (rescue from spiritual death, which is separation from God) and a personal relationship with God will be experienced only by those who surrender their lives to Christ and wholeheartedly “love the truth.” Such people take God at His Word and are fully convinced of the integrity of what He has said. As a result, they reject all revelation or teaching that conflicts with that truth (Matthew 24:5; Matthew 24:11). In order to preset people with the opportunity to accept the truth of Christ for themselves, we must be bold enough to speak His message and invite people to yield their lives to Christ.

When God’s people pray in truth and with a burning passion, they can be assured that God will protect them from Satan. God will strengthen them to face any temptation that may come against them (1 Corinthians 10:13; Hebrews 2:18) and will protect them from demonic powers (Ephesians 6:12).
