(KJV) 2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

HE IS A NEW CREATION / 2 CORINTHIANS 5:17

Those who accept God’s forgiveness and by faith yield their lives to Jesus are “born again” (John 3:3-8) and completely renewed from the inside out. Through the creative command of God (2 Corinthians 4:6), they are transformed spiritually. Through a personal relationship with Jesus, a believer becomes a new person (Galatians 6:15; Ephesians 2:10, 15; Colossians 3:10), renewed in God’s image (with the ability to relate to Him and take on His character traits, 2 Corinthians 4:16; 1 Corinthians 15:49; Ephesians 4:24; Colossians 3:10). They become Christians. As new creations, Christians share His glory (2 Corinthians 3:18) with a renewed knowledge of God (Colossians 3:10) and a transformed way of thinking and behaving (Romans 12:2) that begins to reflect God’s holiness (moral purity, spiritual wholeness, separation from evil and deduction to God’s purposes, Ephesians 4:24). As a new creation belonging to God, the Christian takes on a totally new existence in which God’s Spirit rules (Romans 8:14; Galatians 5:25; Ephesians 2:10). all of this restores the believer to the purpose for which God originally created him or her.

It is likely that those who opposed Paul’s work and challenged his authority in the church had accused him of exaggerating or even being insane when he testified of such things as his encounter with Christ (Acts 9) or the terrible hardships that he had endured. Even at the possibility of people thinking he was crazy; Paul did not deny or renounce any of his testimony. In fact, he joyfully endured everything as a necessary part of fulfilling the cause of Christ. Yet, there was nothing outrageous about his ministry and message to the Corinthians. He had been completely sober-minded and plain-spoken to them, and he had avoided any hint of sensationalism or exaggeration (1 Corinthians 2:1-5; 1 Corinthians 2:1; 1 Corinthians 2:4).

AT HOME WITH THE LORD / 2 CORINTHIANS 5:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 2 Corinthians 5:8

We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

AT HOME WITH THE LORD / 2 CORINTHIANS 5:8

This verse and others (Luke 23:42-43; Philippians 1:23) clearly teach that there is no interruption of time between death and the life to come. The Christian’s death brings him or her immediately into Christ’s presence (1 Corinthians 13:12). That is why for the believer, “to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21). This does not mean that Christ is not present with His followers now. The Holy Spirit lives withing each true follower of Christ and continually works to make Christ’s presence and reality to believers. Yet, this does teach that we are now following Him by faith and not by sight (Hebrews 11:1).

IF THE EARTHLY TENT / 2 CORINTHIANS 5:1

START YOUR DAILY DEVOTION RIGHT

(KJV) 2 Corinthians 5:1

For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

IF THE EARTHLY TENT / 2 CORINTHIANS 5:1

IF THE EARTHLY TENT

Paul uses the conditional clause, “if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed,” because he knows that Christ could return soon. In this case, he would not experience death. Rather, his body would be immediately transformed in going to be with Christ. The same possibility (either death or transformation) exists for Christ’s faithful followers today. Jesus has stated that we do not know the day or the hour of His return (Matthew 24:36, 42, 44); therefore, we must always be prepared. That fact should serve as a powerful motivation for holy living, characterized by moral and spiritual purity, separation from evil and complete devotion to God (Matthew 24:42; 1 John 3:2-3).

EARTHLY TENT … A BUILDING

  1. The term “earthly tent” refers either to our earthly body or our earthly lives, which are temporary and frail.
  2. The “building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands” likely refers to the general environment of the heavenly existence that will endure forever. It could also refer to a body prepared for believers in heaven while they await their resurrection body.

Some have used this passage to teach that after death and while awaiting resurrection, believers exist as bodiless spirits, vague shadows or naked souls without form. However, note that both Moses and Elijah on the Mount of Transfiguration appeared with visible heavenly bodies, even though they were awaiting their resurrection bodies (Matthew 17:2-3; Mark 9:2-4). In addition, in Revelation 6:9-11 souls in heaven (among whom are those killed for their faith during the tribulation period who are awaiting God’s final judgment on the wicked) are described as visible and wearing white robes.

NOT TO RECEIVE GOD’S GRACE IN VAIN / 2 CORINTHIANS 6:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 2 Corinthians 6:1

We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.

NOT TO RECEIVE GOD’S GRACE IN VAIN / 2 CORINTHIANS 6:1

Paul believed without question that a person could receive forgiveness and experience a personal relationship with God (2 Corinthians 6:2) and then later, through carelessness or rebellion against God, abandon the faith and again become spiritually lost and separated from God. Living for ourselves is one way that this can happen (2 Corinthians 5:15). All people must be urged to receive God’s grace (His unearned favor and mercy) and be reconciled to God through faith in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20). In addition, those who have been reunited with God must be urged to remain faithful to Him and submitted to His purposes (2 Corinthians 6:14-18)

MADE HIM WHO HAD NO SIN TO BE SIN – WE MIGHT BECOME THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD / 2 CORINTHIANS 5:21

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 2 Corinthians 5:21

For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

MADE HIM WHO HAD NO SIN TO BE SIN – WE MIGHT BECOME THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD / 2 CORINTHIANS 5:21

MADE HIM WHO HAD NO SIN TO BE SIN

God’s Word nowhere states that Christ actually became a “sinner,” for He remained the perfect and spotless Lamb of God (the only complete sacrifice for sins; 1 Peter 1:19; 1 Corinthians 5:7; Revelation 5:6, 12). But Jesus did take all our sin upon Himself and God the Father made Him the object of His judgment when Jesus paid our death penalty on the cross (Isaiah 53:10). By willingly giving His perfect life as a substitute for our sinful lives, Jesus endured the full grief and punishment for all sin of all time and paid our debt to God in full. Jesus satisfied God’s perfect justice and made it possible for us to receive His forgiveness if we willingly accept His sacrifice for ourselves and surrender our old lives to Him in exchange for His new and eternal life (Isaiah 53:5; Romans 3:24-25).

WE MIGHT BECOME THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD

Righteousness refers to being in a right relationship with God and having the ability – through faith in Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit – to live in a way that is right by God’s standard.

  1. Righteousness here does not refer to a person’s own ability to keep God’s law. No one can get right with God through good works, and no one can keep God’s law in their own ability. The only way we can become righteous is by accepting the sacrifice Jesus made for our sins and by surrendering our own sinful lives to Christ in return for the new life that comes through faith and devotion to Him (Philippians 3:9; Romans 3:21, 4:5, 22).
  2. Believers experience and reflect God’s righteousness to others by growing in their relationship with Christ and by continually surrendering their lives to His purposes. The whole context of the passage (2 Corinthians 5:14-21; 2 Corinthians 5:18-19; 2 Corinthians 5:20) is concerned with believers living for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:15), being controlled by “Christ’s love” (2 Corinthians 5:14), becoming a “new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17), being Christ’s representatives in this world and leading others into a relationship with Him (2 Corinthians 5:18-20; 1 Corinthians 1:30). Only to the extent that we are united with Christ in a close relationship do we become the righteousness of God (John 15:4-5; Galatians 2:20, 1 John 1:9).

CHRIST’S AMBASSADORS / 2 CORINTHIANS 5:20

An ambassador (Greek presbeuomen – “Ambassadors”) is an officially authorized representative of one country (and its government) to another. Paul was serving Jesus Christ as an ambassador (Ephesians 6:20) in that he was speaking with Christ’s authority in every effort to restore individuals to a right relationship with God. In this same effort, all Christ’s followers are to serve as His ambassadors, bringing His message, doing His work and representing His kingdom to those who do not yet have a personal relationship with God. Christ has not left us His Spirit to guide and empower us for service (Acts 1:8).

RECONCILED US TO HIMSELF / 2 CORINTHIANS 5:18-19

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 2 Corinthians 5:18-19

And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

RECONCILED US TO HIMSELF / 2 CORINTHIANS 5:18-19

Reconciliation (Greek katallage) is one part of Christ’s work of redemption (spiritual salvation, restoration, and renewal). To be reconciled to God means to be restored to a right relationship with Him.

  1. The sin and rebellion of the human race have resulted in hostility toward God and separation from Him (Ephesians 2:3; Colossians 1:21). This rebellion brings God’s wrath – His justified anger – and judgment (Romans 1:18, 24-32; 1Corinthians 15:25-26; Ephesians 5:6). Our sin is so completely opposed to God’s perfect character that it required the most extreme penalty: death and eternal separation from God (Romans 5:12; 6:2).
  2. Since we cannot earn or make our way to God through our own imperfect efforts (Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5), God Himself chose to lovingly provide the perfect payment for our offenses against Him. He did so by sending His Son, Jesus (John 3:16), to pay our penalty and die in our place, bridging the gap between God and people (1 Peter 3:18). Through Christ’s atoning (sin-coving, forgiveness-providing) death, God has removed the barrier of sin and opened a way for the sinner to return to God (2 Corinthians 5:19; Romans 3:25; 5:10; Ephesians 2:15-16).
  3. Reconciliation becomes effective for each person only through personal repentance (admitting and turning from sin, accepting God’s forgiveness, yielding one’s life to Christ, and surrendering to His purposes, Matthew 3:2). This is a step that must be taken by faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 3:22).
  4. The church (all of Christ’s true followers) has been given the ministry of reconciliation – the opportunity and responsibility to spread Christ’s message and to help others be reconciled and restored to a right relationship with God (2 Corinthians 5:2; Romans 3:25).

SATAN HIMSELF MASQUERADES AS AN ANGEL OF LIGHT / 2 CORINTHIANS 11:14

We must be very aware and sober about the nature and deceptiveness of evil. We must always pray for spiritual wisdom and discernment because things are not always as they appear – particularly things that seem good, innocent, pleasing and beneficial, yet they deny some element of Biblical truth. This is true of people, organizations, religious philosophies, political strategies, social causes or anything ese that tries to involve or influence people. Even Satan tries to pass himself off as an angel of light when in reality he is the ruler of darkness.

GOD OF THIS AGE HAS BLINDED THE MINDS OF UNBELIEVERS / 2 CORINTHIANS 4:4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 2 Corinthians 4:4

In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

GOD OF THIS AGE HAS BLINDED THE MINDS OF UNBELIEVERS / 2 CORINTHIANS 4:4

The “god of this age” refers to Satan (John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11; Ephesians 2:2; 1 John 5:19), who holds power over much of the activity in the world at the present time. His power is, however, temporary, and conditional. He continues only as God allows, which presents people with the real choice of whether to accept and follow Christ or to continue in their own ways and follow evil. But Satan’s influence will end at the close of history when he is thrown into the lake of fire for eternity (Revelation 19:11 – 20:10). Yet, at the present time, Satan continues his evil work, and those who do not submit themselves to Jesus Christ remain under Satan’s influence. He deceives them and blinds them to the truth of God’s Word so that they do not understand their need for Christ. In their darkness, they refuse to accept His spiritual Salvation. Those of us who know Christ must realize that because people are blinded to the truth, we need to view them through God’s eyes of mercy. Although it may be easier to become discouraged or angered by their rebellious ways, Christians must continue to pray and share Christ’s message with humility and active compassion. The Holy Spirit will enable us to do so (Acts 1:8) in order that all may hear, understand, and choose to believe or disbelieve the truth – to accept or reject Christ (2 Corinthians 4:5-6; Matthew 4:10).
