(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 5:2

For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

THE DAY OF THE LORD / LIKE A THIEF IN THE NIGHT / 1 THESSALONIANS 5:2

THE DAY OF THE LORD

The “day of the Lord” normally does not refer to a 24-hour day, but rather to an extended period of time when God’s enemies are overthrown (Isaiah 2:12-21; 13:9-16; 34:1-4; Jeremiah 46:10; Joel 1:15 – 2:11, 28: 3:9, 12-17; Amos 5:18-20; Zechariah 14:1-3), followed by Christ’s earthly reign (Zephaniah 3:14-17; Revelation 20:4-7).

  1. This “day” begins following the rapture of the church, when Christ’ followers will be taken suddenly from the earth to escape the end-time judgments to come on the world (1 Thessalonians 5:3). The period of those judgments – referred to as the “great tribulation” – included within the day of the Lord (Revelation 6 – 19; Revelation 6:1). This time of widespread distress and judgment ends with Christ’s literal return to earth to defeat the forces of the antichrist and destroy all of God’s enemies (Joel 1:14, 2:30-31; Zephaniah 1:7; Revelation 16:16; 19:11-21).
  2. The day of the Lord will occur at a time when people are hoping for peace and safety (1 Thessalonians 5:3).
  3. The “day” will not come as a surprise to faithful believers – “like a thief in the night” – because they have accepted Christ’s salvation (His forgiveness, new life and a personal relationship with Him) and will be spared from God’s wrath. The faithful will be ready for the Lord’s return because they are alert and self-controlled, living in faith, love and purity (1 Thessalonians 5:4-9).
  4. Faithful believers will be rescued from this “coming wrath” (1 Thessalonians 1:10) through the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Thessalonians 5:9) when He comes to take the faithful people (His church) back to heaven with Him (1 Thessalonian 4:17; John 14:3; Revelations 3:10).
  5. The day of the Lord will end with Christ’s millennial (thousand-year) reign of peace on earth and will bring time as we know it to a close (Revelation 20). The “day” will actually end following Christ’s millennial kingdom (Revelation 20:4-10) and the final judgment of the wicked (Revelation 20:11-15). Then the new heaven and new earth will be established (2 Peter 3:13; Revelation 21:1).
  6. For God’ enemies, “the day of the Lord” means terrible destruction and judgment; but for God’s faithful people, it means rescue and reward.

LIKE A THIEF IN THE NIGHT

This metaphor, or symbolic description, means that the time when the day of the Lord begins is uncertain and unexpected – particularly for those who are unprepared and do not have a personal relationship with Christ. There is no way one can set a date for it (Matthew 24:42-44 on Jesus’ teaching on the unexpected time of His coming for the church).

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 5:1

But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

TIMES AND DATES / 1 THESSALONIANS 5:1

There have always been some who have tried in vain to determine the time or date of Christ’s return, even though Jesus said that “no one knows about that day or hour” (Matthew 24:36, 42, 44; Luke 12:40). Having spoken about Christ’s sudden return to take His followers from the earth (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 Thessalonians 4:13; 1 Thessalonians 4:17; 1 Thessalonians 4:18), Paul now turns to the subject of God’s judgment on all those who reject salvation through faith in Christ. In speaking of the last days, He refers to a terrible time called “the day of the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 5:2). Christ’s sudden return to take His faithful followers to heaven (1 Thessalonians 4:17) marks the beginning of “the day of the Lord,” and it will arrive at an unexpected time, just as Christ Himself taught (Matthew 24:42, 44).

(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 4:18

Therefore encourage one another with these words.

ENCOURAGE EACH OTHER / 1 THESSALONIANS 4:18

In a situation of severe opposition and persecution toward Christians, some of the Thessalonians may have expected to be put to death for their faith before or during the period of “the day of the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 5:2-10; 5:2) or the tribulation period (Revelation 6 – 19). But Paul instills hope in the Thessalonians by explaining to them about the rapture (1 Thessalonians 4:14-17; 1 Thessalonians 4:18; John 14:3; 1 Corinthians 15:51-58). Chrit’s return for the faithful people of His churches would spare them from God’s final judgment on the world. Knowing this would help them to encourage each other.

CAUGHT UP IN THE CLOUDS / 1 THISSALONIANS 4:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 4:17

After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.

CAUGHT UP IN THE CLOUDS / 1 THISSALONIANS 4:17

The words “caught up” are a translation of the Greek harpazo. The Latin equivalent of that word is raptu (to be “caught away” or ‘caught up”), from which we get the word “rapture.” The event, described here and also in 1 Corinthians 15, refers to the time when Christ will take His faithful followers from the earth “to meet the Lord in the air.” This experience will involve only those who are part of Christ’s true church – His faithful followers worldwide.

ABOUT THOSE WHO FALL ASLEEP / 1 THESSALONIANS 4:13

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 4:13

But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

ABOUT THOSE WHO FALL ASLEEP / 1 THESSALONIANS 4:13

This phrase refers to godly people who had died and whose souls were in heaven; it does not mean that the dead are unconscious in a sort of soul-sleep or that they are spirits without bodies (Philippians 1:21). The Thessalonians were concerned about their faithful Christian brothers and sisters who had already died and what part they might have in that great day of the Lord’s return that they anticipated with such hope (1 Thessalonians 1:10). They did not understand how the resurrection of Christians who had already died was related to living Christians being “caught up” (1 Thessalonians 4:14) to meet Christ at His coming (John 14:3). They thought that those who died before Christ’s return for the church (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17) would be resurrected at a much later time. Paul tells them that “the dead in Christ will rise” at the same time the Lord returns for the faithful of His churches.

DOES NOT REJECT MAN BUT GOD / 1 THESSALONIANS 4:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 4:8

Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.

DOES NOT REJECT MAN BUT GOD / 1 THESSALONIANS 4:8

Those who reject these instructions on sanctification (the process of growing in purity and holiness and remaining set apart from evil, 1 Thessalonians 4:1-7; 1 Thessalonians 4:7) are rejecting God.

  1. To resist Paul’s warnings is to stand against the Holy Spirit and to reject the purity God requires. God will judge and punish all, including those of the body of Christ, who turn their backs on His standard of moral purity to satisfy their own desires and lusts (1 Thessalonians 4:6; Hebrews 13:4).
  2. All who reject the truth and have “delighted in wickedness” (2 Thessalonians 2:12) – including some who are part of church congregations – will one day be brought to full accountability. Those who are living in rebellion against God will be left behind when Christ returns for His faithful followers (1 Thessalonians 4:17). Their end will be destruction (1 Thessalonians 5:3), wrath (1 Thessalonians 5:9) and punishment (2 Thessalonians 1:8). They will be judged and condemned (2 Thessalonians 1:9; 2:12) when Christ returns from heaven “in blazing fire “to punish all who “do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus” (2 Thessalonians 1:7-8).

GOD DID NOT CALL US TO BE IMPURE BUT TO LIVE A HOLY LIFE / 1 THESSALONIANS 4:7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 4:7

For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.

GOD DID NOT CALL US TO BE IMPURE BUT TO LIVE A HOLY LIFE / 1 THESSALONIANS 4:7

God calls His people to be pure – spiritually, morally, relationally and in every way (Psalms 24:3-4; Isaiah 52:11; 1 Timothy 5:2, 22; 2 Timothy 2:22; Titus 2:5; Hebrews 7:26; 1 John 3:3). It is those who are pure in heart that will see God (Matthew 5:8). To be pure means being unmixed, undefiled and uncorrupted by evil and worldliness. God calls young people to be examples of purity (1 Timothy 4:12). God requires His people to be holy because He is holy (Leviticus 11:44, 45; 19:2; 2 Corinthians 7:1; 1 Timothy 3:2; 2 Timothy 1:9; Titus 1:8; 1 Peter 1:16). God’s Word says that “without holiness no one will see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14). Holiness is shown by moral purity, spiritual integrity (uprightness of character) and wholeness, separation from evil and dedication to God and His purposes.

and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister. The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before.

WRONG HIS BROTHER OR TAKE ADVANTAGE / 1 THESSALONIANS 4:6

Sexually immoral behavior is an offense against God, but it also wrongs other people, whether they are Christians or not. To wrong (Greek pleonokteo) means “to go beyond what is right,” “to transgress,” “to overreach.” It refers to stepping outside the acceptable and protective boundaries set by God. All sexual activity outside of marriage is an act of terrible injustice against another individual. In a very real sense, it steals from other people precious treasures (purity, innocence, physical and emotional wholeness, a good conscience toward God, etc.) that cannot be returned or replaced. This applies to all areas of sexual involvement – not just sexual intercourse – outside the bounds of the marriage union. Adultery (sexual relations involving at least one married individual, but not with one’s own spouse) violates the rights of another married person. Sexual activity before marriage destroys the purity and virginity that is to be brought into a marriage as a gift between spouses and a means of honoring God.

AVOID SEXUAL IMMORALITY / 1THESSALONIANS 4:3-7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 4:3-7

It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister. The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before. For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.

AVOID SEXUAL IMMORALITY / 1THESSALONIANS 4:3-7

God requires all of His people to live by the highest standards of moral and ethical purity in all sexual matters. Because we are set apart for God’s glory, we must not accept or conform to those behaviors in society that bring disgrace to the Lord.
