YOUR FAITH … PROVED GENUINE / 1 PETER 1:7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Peter 1:7

These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

YOUR FAITH … PROVED GENUINE / 1 PETER 1:7

The theme of suffering for faith in Christ and doing good is emphasized throughout this letter (1 Peter 2:19-23; 3:14-17; 4:1-4, 12-19; 5:10). We are encouraged to rejoice in our difficulties and trials (1 Peter 1:6) because remaining faithful to Christ through tough times will purify our faith. Peter pictures a Christian’s suffering through “all kinds of trials” (1 Peter 1:6) like a fire that refines and purifies gold. But the Christian’s faith is far more precious and valuable because it results in praise, glory and honor both to the believers and to the Lord Jesus when He returns. When we go to be with Christ forever, we will find “that our present sufferings are not worth comparing to the glory that will be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18).

THROUGH FAITH ARE SHIELDED BY GOD’S POWER / 1 PETER 1:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

THROUGH FAITH ARE SHIELDED BY GOD’S POWER / 1 PETER 1:5

This verse presents three truths concerning the spiritual safety and security of believers. This was a particularly relevant message for Peter’s original audience since many of them were experiencing strong persecution.

  1. Believers are “shielded by God’s power” against Satan’s forces of evil that seek to destroy their lives and rob them of their faith and spiritual salvation (2 Timothy 4:18; Jude 1:1, 24; Romans 8:31-39).
  2. The essential condition required for God’s protection is “faith.” His special guarding over our lives is not automatic or by chance; it comes into effect “through faith,” just as it is only “through faith” that believers are saved in the first place (Ephesians 2:8). It is our responsibility to maintain an active faith – one that completely surrenders to Christ, entrust the leadership of our lives to Him and pursues His purposes – if we expect to experience God’s continued guidance and protection (1 Peter 1:9; John 15:4, 6: Colossians 1:23; 2 Timothy 3:14-15; 4:7; Revelation 3:8; Revelation 3:10).
  3. The highest goal of God’s protection through our faith is “salvation.” Here salvation refers not simply to one’s initial decision to accept Christ, but also to the future aspect of salvation (Romans 1:16) – the receiving of an inheritance in heaven (1 Peter 1:4) and “the salvation of your souls” (1 Peter 1:9).

THE FOREKNOWLEDGE OF GOD – GOD THE FATHER … THE SPIRIT … JESUS CHRIIST / 1 PETER 1:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Peter 1:2

who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient to Jesus Christ and sprinkled with his blood:

THE FOREKNOWLEDGE OF GOD – GOD THE FATHER … THE SPIRIT … JESUS CHRIIST / 1 PETER 1:2

THE FOREKNOWLEDGE OF GOD

We are “chosen” to be God’s people according to His “foreknowledge.” This means that just as God knows all things, He has always known how He would work out His plan to save people spiritually and restore them to a right relationship with Him through the work of His Son, Jesus. This plan was in effect even before creation and human history began (1 Peter 1:20; Revelation 13:8).

  1. This does not mean that God determined who would be spiritually saved and who would be eternally condemned. Though God knows all things, He has given us a free will to choose whether or not to accept and follow Him. That is to say, though God knows the choices we will make, He does not cause us to make those particular choices.
  2. Foreknowledge, as used in this passage, is a synonym (a work of similar meaning, a substitute word) for God’s sovereign (supreme and independent) choice to love and set aside for Himself a people who would know Him personally and serve His purposes (Romans 8:29). In a general sense, this “people” is the church as a whole (all true followers of Christ; Ephesians 1:4; 2:4; 1 John 4:19). The church is the object of God’s love and choosing. God determined before human history that the church would be made up of people who are redeemed (purchased and restored to a right relationship with God) through Jesus’ sacrifice for sins so they would be prepared to serve His purposes. The church body includes only individual believers who respond to Christ by surrendering their lives to Him in faith and devotion. They continue to be part of God’s chosen people as they choose to remain loyal to Christ and live securely in His purposes for their lives (2 Peter 1:5, 10).

GOD THE FATHER … THE SPIRIT … JESUS CHRIST

All three persons of the Trinity (the one true God in three distinct, interrelated and unified persons) are described here as having part in God’s plan of redemption (spiritual salvation, restoration) and bringing people into a right and obedient relationship with God (Mark 1:11).

BAPTISM THAT NOW SAVES YOU ALSO / 1 PETER 3:20-22

Start Your Day Right Devotion

(KJV) 1 Peter 3:20-22

Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. 21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: 22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

BAPTISM THAT NOW SAVES YOU ALSO / 1 PETER 3:20-22

Water baptism itself will not bring spiritual salvation (Acts 2:38), but it is a clear instruction given in connection with forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:36-38; 3:19; Acts 2:38). We are actually saved by what water baptism symbolizes – Christ’s death, burial and resurrection and our identification with Christ in these experiences (Romans 6:4). But, at times, the symbol and the reality are so closely linked in Scripture that the symbol of baptism is sometimes used to refer to the reality of salvation (Acts 2:38; Acts 22:16; Galatians 3:27). Baptism is part of salvation in the sense that it is an outward sign and public testimony of our repentance (turning from sin and toward God; Matthew 3:2). It is our public confession and pledge that we belong to Christ and have identified with His death in that we have now died to sin’s control and influence (Romans 6:11). We also identify with Him in His resurrection because He has given us a new life (Romans 6:3-5; Galatians 3:27; Colossians 2:12; Acts 2:38-39). Notice the comparison of water baptism to the flood of Noah’s time (1 Peter 4:2). Just as Noah’s obedience to God’s instructions was evidence of His saving faith even before the flood, so being baptized in water is a testimony to our faith in Christ that brought salvation before we were baptized. Acts 22:16.
