LOVE COVERS A MULTITUDE OF SINS / 1 PETER 4:8

(KJV) 1 Peter 4:8

And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

LOVE COVERS A MULTITUDE OF SINS / 1 PETER 4:8

This refers to the fact that love is not easily offended and does not hold a grudge. Instead, it forgives again and again (Matthew 18:21-22; 1 Corinthians 13:5; Ephesians 4:32; Matthew 6:15; Matthew 18:35; Luke 17:3).

END OF ALL THINGS IS NEAR / 1 PETER 4:7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Peter 4:7

But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

END OF ALL THINGS IS NEAR / 1 PETER 4:7

We should view our lives in light of Christ’s certain and soon-coming return and the end of the world (Hebrews 10:25; James 5:8-9; 1 John 2:18). This fact and awareness call for the following commitments:

  1. To pray to God passionately and consistently (Acts 10:9; 12:5; Colossians 4:2; Colossians 4:12).
  2. To love one another deeply, from the heart (1 Peter 4:8; 1 Peter 1:22; Matthew 22:37-39; 1 Thessalonians 4:9-10; 2 Peter 1:7).
  3. To be gracious, generous and kind to all, particularly those in need (1 Peter 4:9).
  4. To serve other believers through the use of spiritual gifts as empowered by the Spirit (1 Peter 4:10).
  5. To spread Christ’s message and serve God in the power of the Holy Spirit (1 Peter 4:11; Acts 1:5-8).
  6. To praise God (1 Peter 4:11).
  7. To remain loyal to Christ through difficulty and suffering (1 Peter 4:12-19).

THOSE WHO ARE NOW DEAD / 1 PETER 4:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Peter 4:6

For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

THOSE WHO ARE NOW DEAD / 1 PETER 4:6

This passage is best understood as referring to people who heard and accepted the message about Christ while they were still living on earth, but who are now dead. This preaching refers to a past event; the word “now” does not appear in the original Greek, but it is necessary to make it clear that the preaching was done while these people were still alive. They heard the message and believed, and although they have died (“judged according to men in regard to the body”), they now live with God. The verse could be paraphrased to read, “the gospel was preached to those who believed and later died, that they might have eternal life with God” God’s Word is clear about the fact that for those who did not accept Christ in this life, there will be no opportunity to be saved after death (Hebrews 9:27).

HE WHO HAS SUFFERED / 1 PETER 4:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Peter 4:1

Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;

HE WHO HAS SUFFERED / 1 PETER 4:1

Peter again picks up the theme given in 1 Peter 3:18 of how Christ suffered unjustly for doing good and declares that His followers must be prepared to follow His example. Those who patiently endure opposition and suffering for Christ’s cause find it easier to resist sin and to follow God’s plans and purposes for their lives. This is likely true because they depend more fully on God. They have united themselves with Christ, boldly identifying with the shame He endured on the cross (Matthew 6:24; Mark 8:34; Luke 9:23); but they are also destined to share His glory (Romans 8:17). As a result, the pull of sin becomes insignificant, and God’s purposes become top priority (1 Peter 4:2). This spiritual principle will work in the lives of all believers. Obeying God even when it means suffering, ridicule or rejection will strengthen us morally and spiritually and bring God’s honor and blessing into our lives (1 Peter 4:14).

PREACHED TO THE SPIRITS / 1 PETER 3:19-20

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Peter 3:19-20

19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; 20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

PREACHED TO THE SPIRITS / 1 PETER 3:19-20

1 Peter 3:18-20 have long been among the most difficult Bible passages to interpret.

  1. One view is that Christ, sometime between His death and resurrection (1 Peter 3:18) or possibly after His ascension from earth, went to imprisoned angels who had defied God in Noah’s time (1 Peter 3:19-20; 2 Peter 2:4-5) and announced His victory over sin and Satan at the cross and HIs victory over death through His resurrection. Another interpretation is that Christ, by the Holy Spirit, proclaimed through the mouth of Noah (2 Peter 2:5) a message of warning to the ungodly generation that was eventually destroyed in the great flood and who are now in Hades (Luke 16:19-31; Revelation 20:12) awaiting final judgment. This latter interpretation fits best with the context, which speaks of the disobedient and unsaved people of Noah’s day. It would also seem to fit with Peter’ s statement that the Spirit of Christ spoke in times past through the prophets (2 Peter 1:20-21).
  2. Neither this passage nor 1 Peter 4:6 teaches that those who did not follow God or accept Christ by faith during their earthly lifetime will have a second chance to accept forgiveness and spiritual salvation after death. By that time, one’s own choices have determined his or her eternal destiny, and all that remains in final judgement (Hebrews 9:27; Luke 16:26).

CHRIST DIED … ONCE FOR ALL / 1 PETER 3:18

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Peter 3:18

For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

CHRIST DIED … ONCE FOR ALL / 1 PETER 3:18

The whole reason Jesus came to earth was to give His life in our place (1 Peter 2:24) in order to pay the full penalty for our defiance toward God and His standards. By His heath, He bridged the vast gap that existed between sinful humanity and a holy God. As fully man and fully God – and completely without sin – Christ is the only one capable of accomplishing this once-for-all sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins (Hebrews 7:27; 9:28; 10:10).

IN YOUR HEARTS SET APART CHRIST AS LORD – ALWAYS BE PREPARED TO GIVE AN ANSWER / 1 PETER 3:15

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Peter 3:15

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

IN YOUR HEARTS SET APART CHRIST AS LORD – ALWAYS BE PREPARED TO GIVE AN ANSWER / 1 PETER 3:15

IN YOUR HEARTS SET APART CHRIST AS LORD

Peter calls for an inner reverence for, commitment to and dependence on Christ as Lord that is always willing and ready to speak for Him and to explain one’s faith in Him to others (Isaiah 8:13). This means that we must know Christ and God’s Word in order to rightly witness for Christ and lead others to rightly witness for Christ and lead others to Him (John 4:4-26; Acts 13:31).

ALWAYS BE PREPARED TO GIVE AN ANSWER

  1. The word translated “prepared” (Greek hetoimos) means “ready, willing and equipped” and is like the Hebrew word kun, which carries the idea of being firm, stable, secure and enduring. This suggests being in a constant readiness to meet any challenge that comes along. Other Greek and Hebrew synonyms for these words found in Scripture include the idea of being “swift, prompt and responsive.” These ideas all tie in with Peter’s encouragement, “Do not fear; do not be frightened” (1 Peter 3:14), as he speaks of believers’ readiness to talk about what Christ has done for them.
  2. You must be ready to speak about your hope in Christ because you never know when you might encounter someone who is in need of hope and ready to hear about Jesus. If you live, act and speak in ways that reflect hope and a positive difference, people are likely to ask you about it at some point. Even people who are skeptical or give you a hard time about your faith may confront you with questions. You must be prepared to (a) “give an answer” – to know WHAT to say, which comes from a close relationship with Jesus and a commitment to knowing His Word; (b) “for the hope that you have” – to know WHO you are in your relationship with Christ, which will cause people to see a difference in you and perhaps ask about it in an effort to find hope in their own lives (c) “with gentleness and respect” – to know HOW to respond to questions or challenges about your faith, which is vital in reflecting Christ’s love and character (Colossians 4:6).
  3. It is absolutely imperative when speaking about spiritual things – particularly about hope you have found in Christ – to “do this with gentleness and respect.” Most people will resist an arrogant, harsh response that is presented as an argument. Such an approach is unconvincing because it feeds into the misconception that Christians are rude and defensive. By being respectful, we are more likely to be heard and perhaps develop a relationship through which we can influence unbelievers to consider the claims of Christ for themselves. In addition, we reflect Christ’s character when we show kindness (Romans 2:4).

HUSBANDS – SO THAT NOTHING WILL HINDER YOUR PRAYERS / 1 PETER 3:7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Peter 3:7

Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

HUSBANDS – SO THAT NOTHING WILL HINDER YOUR PRAYERS / 1 PETER 3:7

HUSBANDS

Peter mentions three things about which husbands should be concerned in their relationships with their wives.

  1. The husband must be considerate and understanding, always showing a self-sacrificing, Christlike love for His wife, as directed in God’s Word (Ephesians 5:25-33; Colossians 3:19; Ephesians 5:21).
  2. The husband should treat his wife with respect as an equal heir of God’s gracious salvation and inheritance of eternal life. The husband must honor, provide for and protect his wife according to the wife’s needs. “Weaker” probably refers to the woman’s physical strength. The husband must help his wife fulfill her full potential in relationship with God.
  3. A husband must take the lead in submitting his own interests and concerns for the good of his wife and family. He must praise and highly treasure his wife, giving her every reason to love and help him according to God’s purposes for their marriage and family (1 Peter 3:1-6; Ephesians 5:23).
  4. A husband must never abuse his wife or treat her improperly in any way – physically, emotionally or spiritually. Peter teaches that a husband who fails to live with his wife in an understanding way and to give her proper honor as a child of God will damage his own relationship with God by creating a barrier between his prayers and God (Colossians 3:19).

SO THAT NOTHING WILL HINDER YOUR PRAYERS

Disunity and contention between husbands and wives not only affect their relationship with each other, but they also affect each of their personal relationships with God. In particular, it can block the effectiveness of their prayers, hindering God’s help and provision in their lives. Notice that God holds the husband primarily accountable for maintaining peace in the home.
