(KJV) 1 Corinthians 5:1
It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife.
SEXUAL IMMORALITY AMONG YOU – HAS HIS FATHER’S WIFE / 1 CORINTHIANS 5:1
SEXUAL IMMORALITY AMONG YOU
Paul writes about a report of extreme sexual misconduct in the Corinthian church and the refusal of church leaders to deal with the offender (1 Corinthians 5:1-8). He declares that the church, as a holy people, must not permit or tolerate immoral behavior among its members. He gives three reasons why the church should discipline those who defy God and His standards in this way:
- For the good of the offenders (1 Corinthians 5:5). Being expelled from the congregation might awaken them to the seriousness of their sin and their need for forgiveness and spiritual restoration.
- For the sake of the church’s purity (1 Corinthians 5:6-8). Tolerating evil within a church – among those who follow Christ in words only – will gradually lower the moral standards of most others in the church, causing them to become comfortable with sin.
- For the good of the world (1 Corinthians 5:1). The church cannot influence others to follow Christ and become part of His church if it is seen as not different than the world (Matthew 5:13) or if it fails to be an accurate example of Christ’s character. (Matthew 5:22; Matthew 18:15-17; 2 Thessalonians 3:6; Revelation 2:19-23).
HAS HIS FATHER’S WIFE
The exact sin is not clear. Paul’s reference to “his father’s wife” probably means the offender was sexually involved with his stepmother.
- Paul was horrified that the church would tolerate such immorality. He views this ungodly acceptance of this sin in the church to be as serious as the actual sin itself.
- The permissiveness (willing acceptance of something as right that God disapproves of) of the Corinthians speaks to our situation today. Many churches are tolerant of and silent about immoral behavior among their members, including adultery and all forms of sexual impurity. Premarital sexual activity is not only tolerated but at times justified as expressions of love and commitment. Many leaders fail to challenge the unhealthy and often immoral dating habits common among many of today’s youth. Like the Corinthian leaders, they refuse to grieve over the spiritual corruption within the church. As a result, the believers become more and more like the society in which they live.
