And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.

HIS HEART WENT OUT TO HER / LUKE 7:13

Jesus’ compassion for this widow shows that God has a special love care for widows or for any person who is left alone in the world. Scripture teaches the following:

  1. God is a Father to the fatherless and a defender of widows (Psalms 68:5). They are under His special care and protection (Exodus 22:22-24; Deuteronomy 10:18; Psalms 146:9; Proverbs 15:25).
  2. Through giving God’s tithe (a tenth of one’s income to be reserved for God’s work) and the generosity of His people, God gives us the opportunity to help provide for the fatherless and the widows (Deuteronomy 14:28-29; 24:19-21; 26:12-12). 
  3. God blesses those who help and honor those in need (Isaiah 1:17, 19; Jeremiah 7:6-7; 22:3-4).
  4. God opposes those who take advantage of or hurt widows or orphans (Exodus 22:22-24; Deuteronomy 24:17; 27:19; Job 24:3; Psalms 94:6, 16; Zechariah 7:10).
  5. Widows are recipients of God’s tender love and compassion (Luke 7:11-17; 18;2-8; 21:2-4; Mark 12:42-43). 
  6. The early church made it a priority to care for widows (Acts 6:1-6).
  7. One area of consideration in true faith is to look after orphans and widows in times of difficulty or distress (James 1:27; 1 Timothy 5:3-8).
