GREAT EARTHQUAKE / REVELATION 6:12-13

(KJV) Revelation 6:12-13

And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; 13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.

GREAT EARTHQUAKE / REVELATION 6:12-13

With the opening of the sixth seal, John’s attention quickly returns to earth as he gets a glimpse of disastrous events to come that will throw the natural order of the visible universe into disarray. The catastrophic judgments portrayed here involve a physical shaking of the world, turmoil in the visible universe and intense darkness and terror for people on earth (Revelation 6:15-17; Isaiah 34:4; Joel 2:30-31; Haggi 2:6-9; Matthew 24:29). This appears to be a preview of the very end, though there is still a seventh seal (Revelation 8).

Once again, it seems clear that the three series of sevens (seals Revelation 6:1, trumpets Revelation 8:6, bowls Revelation 16:1) do not simply take place in a linear order following one after the other, since each set of seven appears to bring us to the end of the entire period. John may likely see these series of judgments in a more cyclical, overlapping and concurrent pattern, with each series of seven previewing things that will coincide with judgments in the next series. Each seventh judgment actually opens or starts the next series of events, with the severity of judgment intensifying with each series. It is as if each series of seven “zooms in” a little closer – like a lens – providing a narrower and more direct focus on the last days of the tribulation period. In this case, each seventh judgment (the last one in each series) brings us closer to Christ’s return to earth.
