FORSAKEN YOUR FIRST LOVE / REVELATION 2:4

(KJV) Revelation 2:4

Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.

This refers to the deep love and passion for Christ and His Word that the Ephesian Christians had in the past. This probably describes their response after they first accepted Christ’s message and devoted their lives to Him (John 14:15, 21; John 15:9-10). 

1. The Ephasian church had been faithful and diligent in its ministry. Yet, Jesus’ challenge to this church shows that Christians can have the right beliefs and do the right things, even enduring hardship for the cause of Christ, but still be lacking in their personal relationship with Him. The Ephesians were giving God their service, but not themselves. 
2. This warning teaches us that working hard for the church, knowing and defending the truth, obeying many of God’s commands, worshiping in the church and even enduring hardship for faith in Christ are not the primary issues when it comes to relationship with God. Above all, Jesus wants those in His churches to have a deep and sincere love for Him personally (2 Corinthians 11:3; Deuteronomy 10:12). 
3. Sincere love for Jesus should be evident in our personal priorities. Are we spending consistent personal time with Him in prayer and His Word – not out of duty, but because we want to know Him more? Do we go throughout each day with a strong awareness of His presence at all times? Is there evidence of moral putty in all areas of life, which means avoiding anything that could offend the Holy Spirit or compromise our devotion to Christ (2 Corinthians 11:3; 2 Chronicles 30:6; Matthew 22:37, 39; John 21:15)? 
4. Revelation calls this lack of passionate devotion toward Christ as having “fallen” spiritually (Revelation 2:5) and serious enough to require repentance. This means changing our attitude toward God, turning from our own way, accepting God’s forgiveness, surrendering to Christ’s leadership and pursuing God’s purposes (Matthew 3:2). 
5. To help guard against the error of the Ephesian church, we must constantly ask ourselves: Are we staying both doctrinally pure (in our basis of belief and teaching) and spiritually passionate? Are we simply trying to do things for Christ, but not taking time to be with him?
