For all the firstborn of the children of Israel are mine, both man and beast: on the day that I smote every firstborn in the land of Egypt I sanctified them for myself.

All Israelite firstborn males belonged to the Lord (Exodus 13:11-16); however, God allowed the Levites to become substitutes for all the firstborn (Numbers 3:9, 11-13, 40-41, 45-51; 8:14-19).
