(KJV) Numbers 1:52
And the children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, throughout their hosts.
EACH MAN … UNDER HIS OWN STANDARD / NUMBERS 1:52
The Israelite camp was organized with an inner circle of Levites (the family tribe that filled the ministry and worship-leading roles) surrounding the tabernacle (the portable sanctuary and place of worship signifying God’s presence among the people). Then there was an outer circle of the twelve other tribes, three on each side of the tabernacle. Their method of marching or traveling was also organized in such a way that when the cloud of God’s presence lifted, they could move quickly. Also, when the cloud settled, they could find their places in the camp without confusion. The Bible emphasizes the importance of organization so that work can be done smoothly and without waste of time or effort. The tabernacle in the center of the camp was a symbol that the life of the nation centered around the Lord and worshiping Him as their Redeemer (Savior, Rescuer, Life-giver).
