BE GLAD AND REJOICE / ZEPHANIAH 3:14-17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Zephaniah 3:14-17

14 Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel; be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem.

15 The Lord hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy: the king of Israel, even the Lord, is in the midst of thee: thou shalt not see evil any more.

16 In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear thou not: and to Zion, Let not thine hands be slack.

17 The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

BE GLAD AND REJOICE / ZEPHANIAH 3:14-17

God’s people have the greatest reason to rejoice because they have obtained spiritual salvation – their personal relationship with God. True, heartfelt joy is not natural; it is a supernatural response to God’s activity in our lives. We have joy because:

  1. We are forgiven and no longer face punishment for our sins (Zephaniah 3:15).
  2. Our enemy has been defeated – we are set free from the power of Satan and sin (Zephaniah 3:15).
  3. God is with us, giving friendship, grace and help throughout our lives (Zephaniah 3:15-17; Hebrews 4:16).
  4. We are the focus of God’s love and delight (Zephaniah 3:17).

Everyone who accepts the gift of forgiveness and eternal life made available through God’s Son, Jesus, has every reason to rejoice (Ephesians 1:17-18; 3:16-20). Our joy will reach its climax, or highest level, and be complete when God reveals His full glory and majesty on the earth at the end of time (Isaiah 35:1-10)

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Zephaniah 3:11

In that day shalt thou not be ashamed for all thy doings, wherein thou hast transgressed against me: for then I will take away out of the midst of thee them that rejoice in thy pride, and thou shalt no more be haughty because of my holy mountain.

ON THAT DAY / ZEPHANIAH 3:11

When God brings the nations to a true and right relationship with Him, He will restore the honor and fortunes of His own people – the true Israel (Zephaniah 3:20).

BEYOND THE RIVERS OF CUSH / ZEPHANIAH 3:10

(KJV) Zephaniah 3:10

From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia my suppliants, even the daughter of my dispersed, shall bring mine offering.

BEYOND THE RIVERS OF CUSH / ZEPHANIAH 3:10

Cush represented on of the most distant lands known at that time. There will be people from all nations, even nations that are relatively unknown today, who will someday bring offerings of worship and gratitude to God in Jerusalem (Isaiah 66:18,20).

HE DOES NO WRONG / ZEPHANIAH 3:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Zephaniah 3:5

The just Lord is in the midst thereof; he will not do iniquity: every morning doth he bring his judgment to light, he faileth not; but the unjust knoweth no shame.

HE DOES NO WRONG / ZEPHANIAH 3:5

Though humans fail and fall into sin, God remains pure, true, faithful and never does wrong. Thes traits are part of His very nature.

  1. The Lord maintains perfect truth and justice in all He does (Deuteronomy 32:4), and we must always trust Him to do what is right for us in all situations.
  2. Although things may happen to us that we do not understand, we can always be sure that His love, care and faithfulness to us will never cease. Every day He will work in our lives to do what is best for us. God cannot and will not fail.

OFFICIALS … RULERS … PROPHETS … PRIESTS / ZEPHANIAH 3:3-4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Zephaniah 3:3-4

Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they gnaw not the bones till the morrow.

Her prophets are light and treacherous persons: her priests have polluted the sanctuary, they have done violence to the law.

OFFICIALS … RULERS … PROPHETS … PRIESTS / ZEPHANIAH 3:3-4

These were the four main categories of leadership in Judah. God condemned these people of influence for failing to follow Him and be holy (morally pure, spiritually whole and separated from evil). In fact, their example was leading people father away from God.

  1. The officials and rulers perverted, or distorted, the law and used their positions to gain money and property for themselves.
  2. The prophets changed God’s message and tried to gain popularity and approval by telling people only what they wanted to hear.
  3. The priests corrupted God’s house by violating His regulations and living immorally.
  4. We must avoid and resist leaders who tolerate or promote worldliness and immorality in God’s name. Such false leaders should be replaced with leaders who insist that God’s standards be followed. We must never lower our standards to make room for anyone’s sins.

WOE TO THE CITY OF OPPRESSORS / ZEPHANIAH 3:1-7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Zephaniah 3:1-7

Woe to her that is filthy and polluted, to the oppressing city!

She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in the Lord; she drew not near to her God.

Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they gnaw not the bones till the morrow.

Her prophets are light and treacherous persons: her priests have polluted the sanctuary, they have done violence to the law.

The just Lord is in the midst thereof; he will not do iniquity: every morning doth he bring his judgment to light, he faileth not; but the unjust knoweth no shame.

I have cut off the nations: their towers are desolate; I made their streets waste, that none passeth by: their cities are destroyed, so that there is no man, that there is none inhabitant.

I said, Surely thou wilt fear me, thou wilt receive instruction; so their dwelling should not be cut off, howsoever I punished them: but they rose early, and corrupted all their doings.

WOE TO THE CITY OF OPPRESSORS / ZEPHANIAH 3:1-7

After condemning the other nations, Zephaniah turned his attention back to Jerusalem and God’s people. They had become rebellious toward God and opposed to His law. Moral corruption and ungodliness of heart and actions had moved into every level of society. People everywhere were refusing to listen to God’s true prophets.
