I WILL RETURN TO ZION / ZECHARIAH 8:3

(KJV) Zechariah 8:3

Thus saith the Lord; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the Lord of hosts the holy mountain.

I WILL RETURN TO ZION / ZECHARIAH 8:3

The key to Israel’s full restoration is God’s return to Zion – usually used as another term for Jerusalem. Zion was the name of an ancient Jebusite mountain fortress that was part of King David’s original conquest of the city (2 Samuel 5:6-7). After a time, the term “Zion” was applied to the section of the city where the fortress stood. This area is likely where the ark of the covenant (representing God’s presence among the people) was housed for a time in a special tent-shrine. After Solomon’s Temple was built, Zion became the name for the temple grounds. In a larger sense, the term “Zion” became a general reference to God’s “dwelling place,” or central place of worship on earth (Psalms 9:11; 74:2; Joel 3:21). At times, it also can refer to the renewed and restored Jerusalem in which Christ will reign on earth at the end of history (Isaiah 52:8; 62:1-12). The latter meaning is the focus of this passage, as it points to the time when Christ will return in glory and begin His earthly reign over the nations (Revelation 20). At that time, God’s presence will make Jerusalem a city of truth and faithfulness, and the mountain of the Lord again will be holy (pure and set apart for His worship). This chapter gives ten blessings that will characterize Christ’s earthly reign at the end of history, each one beginning with the phrase, “This is what the LORD Almighty says.”

Flint was one of the hardest substances known in Old Testament times (Jeremiah 17:1; Ezekiel 3:8-9). 

  1. Through His law and through previous Spirit-led prophets, God had called His people to practice justice, mercy and compassion (Zechariah 7:8-9; Micah 6:8); but the people stubbornly refused to obey. When judgment came, it was too late to repent. 
  2. What God expects from His people has not changed. He desires that we show love and compassion to those in need.

WAS IT REALLY FOR ME THAT YOU FASTED? / ZECHARIAH 7:1-5

(KJV) Zechariah 7:1-5

And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Darius, that the word of the Lord came unto Zechariah in the fourth day of the ninth month, even in Chisleu; 2 When they had sent unto the house of God Sherezer and Regemmelech, and their men, to pray before the Lord, 3 And to speak unto the priests which were in the house of the Lord of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years? 4 Then came the word of the Lord of hosts unto me, saying, 5 Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month, even those seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me?

WAS IT REALLY FOR ME THAT YOU FASTED? / ZECHARIAH 7:1-5

God’s law called for only one day of fasting (going without food for a limited time to focus on spiritual matters) each year – the Day of Atonement in the seventh month. By this time, the Jews had added a fast in the fifth month to commemorate the destruction of the temple by Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylonian armies (2 Kings 25:8-9). Now that the temple was being rebuilt (518 B.C.), they wanted to know if they had to continue observing that day. 

  1. God’s message was that their fasting was not acceptable because it was done with the wrong attitude and motives (Matthew 6:16). They simply were going through a formal routine without any real hunger and thirst for God and desire to accomplish His purposes. 

The people needed to pay attention to prophets such as Isaiah (Isaiah 58:3-5) and to respond by sincerely fasting and praying for God’s help so they could live in a way that pleased Him and benefited others. This should include promoting justice and showing mercy (Zechariah 7:8-10; Micah 6:8).

WILL BE A PRIEST ON HIS THRONE / ZECHARIAH 6:13

(KJV) Zechariah 6:13

Even he shall build the temple of the Lord; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both

WILL BE A PRIEST ON HIS THRONE / ZECHARIAH 6:13

Two of the previous visions (fourth and fifth) had involved Joshua’s and Zerubbabel’s roles as priest and governor. In Zechariah 6:9-15, Zechariah relates the message of those visions to the final and highest King-Priest who is to come – the Messiah, or Christ. The Lord commanded Zechariah to make a crown of silver and gold and put it on Joshua, the high priest.

  1. Joshua’s coronation (the act or ceremony of crowning an official; in this case, a priest) points symbolically to the crowning and reign of Jesus, the Messiah, who is also referred to as the “Branch” (Isaiah 11:1; Jeremiah 33:15; Isaiah 53:2; Zechariah 3:8). Jesus would be both Priest and King. He would first do His priestly work by being Mediator of a renewed relationship between God and people (Isaiah 53:10; Luke 24:26); He would then reign in His rightful position as King of kings and Lord of lords (1 Timothy 6:15; Revelation 17:14; 19:16).

Jesus’ personal suffering and sacrifice allows us to have peace with God (Isaiah 9:6); in fact, Jesus is still our source of peace (Ephesians 2:14-15). Through a personal relationship with Him, we become part of God’s kingdom, which is a matter “of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17). The complete fulfillment of Christ’s reign begins in the millennium (His thousand-year reign of peace, Revelation 20), when He will rule on earth at the end of history.

THE FOUR SPIRITS OF HEAVEN / ZECHARIAH 6:1-5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Zechariah 6:1-5

And I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came four chariots out from between two mountains; and the mountains were mountains of brass. 2 In the first chariot were red horses; and in the second chariot black horses; 3 And in the third chariot white horses; and in the fourth chariot grisled and bay horses. 4 Then I answered and said unto the angel that talked with me, What are these, my lord? 5 And the angel answered and said unto me, These are the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth.

THE FOUR SPIRITS OF HEAVEN / ZECHARIAH 6:1-5

In his eighth vision, Zechariah saw four war chariots between two bronze mountains. This vision relates to the first vision (Zechariah 1:8-11) with a few different details. Yet the Lord still is depicted as the one who controls the events of history and who eventually will conquer the nations that oppress His people. 

  1. The colors of the horses pulling the chariots were red (signifying war), black (signifying famine and death) and speckled (signifying pestilence and famine; Revelation 6:2-8; Revelation 6:2; Revelation 6:4; Revelation 6:5; Revelation 6:8). Most interpreters believe that the chariot pulled by white horses represents the victory of God’s agents of judgment. 
  2. The four spirits are actually angelic beings (Psalms 104:4; Revelation 7:1-3; Revelation 7:1; Revelation 7:2).
  3. Both the war chariots and the bronze mountains suggest judgment against God’s enemies. The riders and chariots go toward the north and south (toward Babylon and Egypt), which also represent the northern and southern powers during the end times, which God will destroy.

A MEASURING BASKET / ZECHARIAH 5:5-11

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Zechariah 5:5-11

Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me, Lift up now thine eyes, and see what is this that goeth forth. 6 And I said, What is it? And he said, This is an ephah that goeth forth. He said moreover, This is their resemblance through all the earth. 7 And, behold, there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah. 8 And he said, This is wickedness. And he cast it into the midst of the ephah; and he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof. 9 Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven. 10 Then said I to the angel that talked with me, Whither do these bear the ephah? 11 And he said unto me, To build it an house in the land of Shinar: and it shall be established, and set there upon her own base.

A MEASURING BASKET / ZECHARIAH 5:5-11

The measuring basket represents the people’s immorality and offenses against God. 

  1. The woman represents all kinds of wickedness (Revelation 17:3-6, perhaps a female figure is used because the Hebrew word for “wickedness [Zechariah 5:8] is feminine in gender; wickedness is a general term referring to moral, religious and social evil). She was imprisoned in the basket by a heavy lead cover and then was taken to Babylonia, which represents the godless world system dominated by Satan (Revelation 17:1). This would be a suitable place to dispense of evil (it is where God had sent His people into captivity and exile as a punishment for centuries of rebellion). The wicked who remained among God’s people not only had to be punished but also removed from the land. Only then could it truly be the “holy land” (Zechariah 2:12).

Sin and wickedness must be removed from our churches and our individual lives, or God will remove His Spirit from us (Revelation 2-3). In the end times, God will remove sin from the whole earth, and Jesus Christ will forever reign in glory with His people (Revelation 19-22).

A FLYING SCROLL / ZECHARIAH 5:1-4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Zechariah 5:1-4

Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll. 2 And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits. 3 Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it. 4 I will bring it forth, saith the Lord of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.

A FLYING SCROLL / ZECHARIAH 5:1-4

The fact that it was “flying” meant that it was unrolled and waving like a banner for all to see. It represented God’s curse, or judgment, against sinners – those who continued to rebel against God – in the land of Israel. Though God is merciful and patient (2 Peter 3:9), a time for judgment is coming that will consume the wicked. The time of grace (God’s undeserved favor, kindness, and mercy) someday will come to an end. His most severe acts of judgment will come during the great tribulation.
