HER CHILDREN /REVELATION 2:23

This “Jezebel” (Revelation 2:20) represents the spiritual mother of all those within the church who promote antinomian (acts that are “against the law”) or libertine lifestyles (indulging freely in immoral pleasures). Such people feel that because of God’s grace (His unearned and undeserved favor and love), they are not bound by any fixed rules or religious regulations -including the moral standards of God’s law (1 John 1:4). They claim they have the liberty to engage in immoral behaviors without fear of punishment from God. However, Christ will ultimately judge, condemn and destroy all those who promote such deception and destruction in His churches.

YOU TOLERATE THAT WOMAN JEZEBEL, WHO CALLS HERSELF A PROPHETESS / REVELATION 2:20

(KJV) Revelation 2:20

Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.

YOU TOLERATE THAT WOMAN JEZEBEL, WHO CALLS HERSELF A PROPHETESS / REVELATION 2:20

Again, as with the Ephesian church, we see believers who have been faithful to serve God but who also had serious spiritual issues. The Believers at Thyatira were praised for the spiritual growth that they showed in serving God (Revelation 2:19). However, their willingness to compromise on spiritual matters greatly displeased the Lord. There was tolerance (like those in Pergamum) of unbiblical teaching and the immoral lifestyles of those in positions of leadership (Revelation 2:14; Revelation 2:20).

  1. John calls one particular person “Jezebel,” derived from the Old Testament Jezebel whose name is a synonym for false worship, sensuality and manipulative control (1 Kings 16:31; 19:1-3; 21:10-15; 21:25). Some at Thyatira were accepting the seductive teaching of this person who undoubtedly claimed to speak for God but was bringing harm to sincere believers. Christ condemns this Jezebel and the freedom to sin that she represents, and he calls those who tolerated her to repent and turn back to God. 
  2. We must reject all spokespersons who put their own words above Biblical revelation and standard (1 Corinthians 14:29) and who claim that God accepts immoral behavior and lifestyles among professing Christians. Some in the church show an openness to tolerate such beliefs and teaching because it excuses their own questionable behavior and compromise with the world’s evil pleasures. Others will overlook this type of sin because of spiritual apathy, personal friendships or the fear of confrontation. Still others have completely selfish reasons for this unacceptable practice: self-promotion and material gain. God says He will judge such leaders and punish all who sin in these ways and do not turn back to God for forgiveness and change their ways (Revelation 2:20-23; Luke 17:3-4). 
  3. God takes it very seriously when anyone, but especially a professing believer, causes believers to sin by influencing them to do things that violate their own consciences or to engage in behaviors largely identified with ungodly practices (Matthew 18:6, 7; 1 Corinthians 8:12).
  4. In order to guard ourselves and our churches against these less obvious but destructive influences, we must regularly examine ourselves by asking: Has our ministry fruitfulness or success caused us to rationalize questionable behavior or to overlook personal or church-wide sin?

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

HEAR WHAT THE SPIRIT SAYS – A WHITE STONE WITH A NEW NAME / REVELATION 2:17

HEAR WHAT THE SPIRIT SAYS

We must pay attention and respond to the warnings of the Holy Spirit today. He continues to speak the same words Jesus spoke to the seven churches of Asia, commanding us to stay true to God’s Word, overcome sin in the world and not to tolerate immoral behavior among the people of God. If we lose our victory in these important areas, we lose God’s favor, His guiding presence and the Holy Spirit’s power. In the end, we will become enemies of God’s kingdom. But there is continued promise of help for those who remain faithful and depend completely on God to help them overcome. These are the ones who receive the hidden manna (Psalms 78:24; John 6:48-51, 58, 63), which means spiritual life, nourishment and fulfillment from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. We will also receive a “white stone,” which represents the triumph of our faith over everything that was aimed to destroying our devotion to Christ.

A WHITE STONE WITH A NEW NAME

In ancient times, certain kinds of stones carried special meaning. In John’s time, a white rock was sometimes used in judicial matters as a vote of “not guilty.” In the context of this passage, it would represent forgiveness and the statement of spiritual innocence for those who had overcome immoral desires and worldly lusts. They were declared to be faithful to God. Relating to Christian victory, this stone might also be considered as the admission to Christ’s ultimate victory banquet (Revelation 19:9). The stone would bear the God-given name of the carrier and would mean that the carrier had a new nature, authority and full inheritance with God. The name would designate the bearer of the stone as a forgiven servant of Christ and a victorious conqueror (Isaiah 62:2; 65:15).

Jesus opposes any persons within His churches who promote a tolerant attitude toward sin, especially those who claim to follow Christ (Revelation 2:15; Revelation 2:6; 1 Corinthians 5:2; Galatians 5:21). He promises to wage war against any hypocritical and immoral person whose example invites others to follow in that destructive path (Revelation 1:16). Their only hope is to sincerely repent (Matthew 3:2). middle

THE TEACHING OF BALAAM / REVELATION 2:14

(KJV) Revelation 2:14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.

THE TEACHING OF BALAAM / REVELATION 2:14

Balaam was a false prophet of the Old Testament who sold his services to an ungodly king and advised the Midianite women how to tempt the Israelites to compromise their faith by idolatry (worshiping false gods or anything in place of the one true God) and immoral behavior (Numbers 22:5, 7; 25:1-2; 31:16; 2 Peter 2:15). For this reason, Balaam represents corrupt and deceptive teachers or preachers – or any believers – who lead or influence God’s people to compromise with worldly beliefs and behaviors, all for the sake of selfish interests or personal advancement. The church at Pergamum evidently had teachers who taught that spiritually saving faith and immoral lifestyle were compatible. To guard against this subtle, but destructive, influence and preserve our effectiveness as part of Christ’s church, we must ask ourselves: Could our outward testimony for Christ be threatened by inwardly compromising the truth?

This may mean a place where the influence of Satan and evil was very strong, especially since Pergamum was the official center of Roman emperor worship in the province of Asia. Antipas is thought to be the first Christian in Asia to be killed for his faith in Christ. According to tradition, he was roasted to death in a bronze kettle during the reign of Emperor Domitian.

CROWN OF LIFE / REVELATION 2:10

Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

CROWN OF LIFE / REVELATION 2:10

The word translated “crown” (Greek stephanon) does not refer to a crown worn by royalty (Revelation 12:3; 13:1; 19:12). This word refers to a wreath or victor’s crown originally made of palm leaves and placed on the heads of winning athletes (Revelation 3:11; 4:4, 10; Revelation 6:2; Revelation 9:7; 12:1; 14:14). But the same word is also used of the crown of thorns brutally placed on Jesus’ head (Mark 15:7) and of the crowns of gold on the 24 elders in Revelation 4:4. Faithful followers of Christ are promised eternal life with Christ as their ultimate crown of reward.

I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.

POVERTY / REVELATION 2:9

Poverty (Greek ptocheia) literally means “having nothing, at all.” Smyrna was a proud Asian City closely aligned with Rome and eager to submit to the empire’s demands for emperor worship. Smyrna also had a large community of Jews that rejected Christ, though they claimed to follow God. In truth, they were under Satan’s control and helped to create a hostile environment for the Christians. Polycarp, one of the most famous early Christian martyrs (killed for his faith), was the bishop of Smyrna. The persecution and poverty of the believers at Smyrna were extensive. They were economically at the lowest point, yet Jesus says they were spiritually rich. Note the contrast to the Laodicean church, which had great material wealth, yet was considered spiritually “wretched, pitiful, poor” (Revelation 3:17; Matthew 6:20; 2 Corinthians 6:10; James 2:5). To keep our Christian faith and lives in proper perspective, we should ask ourselves: Is serving Jesus a matter of convenience for me, or is it truly costing me something? am I serving God more for what I can get from Him, or for how I can surrender myself for His kingdom and purposes?

TO HIM WHO OVERCOMES / REVELATION 2:7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Revelation 2:7

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

TO HIM WHO OVERCOMES / REVELATION 2:7

An overcomer (Greek nikon) is one who has responded to God’s grace (His undeserved favor, love and spiritual enablement) through faith in Christ, has accepted God’s forgiveness and has entered a personal relationship with Him. But more than that, an overcomer continues to rely on God’s grace and to show true faith by remaining passionately devoted to Christ. The overcomer lives in consistent victory over sin, Satan and the corrupt world system.

  1. Even when surrounded by strong opposition and rebellion against God and His people, overcomers refuse to conform to worldly patterns of belief and behavior. They also firmly resist any ungodly tendencies among people within the church (Revelation 2:24). By hearing and responding with obedience to what the Spirit says to the churches, overcomers remain faithful to Christ to the very end (Revelation 2:26). Overcomers accept only God’s standard of living as revealed in His Word (Revelation 3:8). 
  2. Christ promises several things to the overcomers – and only the overcomers – in His churches. They will eat of the tree of life in God’s paradise; they will not be hurt by the second death (Revelation 2:11; a spiritual death, which is permanent separation from God). Overcomers will be given a new name in heaven and receive hidden manna (Revelation 2:17; heavenly “food”; Psalms 78:24); they will be given authority over the nations (Revelation 2:26); and they will not have their names removed from the book of life but will be honored by Christ in the presence of His Father and the angels (Revelation 3:5). They will remain with God in His temple and be identified with the name of God, Christ and the new Jerusalem (Revelation 3:12). Overcomers will reign with Christ (Revelation 3:21) and will forever be God’s children (Revelation 21:7).
  3. The secret of victory for overcomers is Christ’s sacrificial death for their sins (Romans 6:2-11), their own faithful testimony about Jesus and their persistent love for Christ, even to death (Revelation 12:11; 1 John 5:4). Note that we either overcome sin, the world and Satan, or we are overcome by them and are ultimately thrown into the lake of fire (Revelation 2:11; Revelation 3:5; Revelation 20:15; Revelation 21:8). There is no middle ground or in-between group.
